In an instant, a chilling coldness flashed through Jaxon's eyes.
Jaxon's gaze lingered on the man in front of him, watching as Finn suddenly clamped down on Sally's wrist.
In the next instant, Sally was yanked right out of Jaxon's embrace.
Finn pulled her to his side and shot Jaxon a wary, guarded look.
As his arms suddenly emptied, a profound sense of emptiness washed over Jaxon's face. He glared at Finn, his eyes burning with even more hostility.
"Sir, thanks for earlier." Even though Finn was expressing his gratitude, his tone was noticeably cold.
Jaxon shot a sharp glance at Finn and then locked eyes with Sally, his expression darkening. "Who is he?"
At these words, Finn's brows furrowed slightly. "You two know each other?"
Sally instinctively nodded. "Finn, this is Jaxon Zale, Brad's uncle."
Upon hearing it was someone from the Zale family, Finn darkened his face even more.
In his impression, everyone in the Zales family was rotten to the core.
"Mr. Zale," Sally said to Jaxon, "this is Finn, my grandpa's only student before he passed away."
Though Finn clearly disliked the Zale family, he reluctantly extended his hand. "Nice to meet you."
Jaxon glanced down at the offered hand, hesitated for a moment, and then finally shook it. "Nice to meet you too."
Finn could clearly sense something unusual in the way Jaxon looked at Sally.
There was a predatory intensity in his gaze, yet it was softened by an undercurrent of tenderness. It was an unsettling contradiction.
Even the handshake between them tightened slightly, Jaxon's grip growing firmer.
Sally could clearly sense the tension in the air and quickly spoke up to break the ice. "Mr. Zale, what brings you all here so suddenly?"
Jaxon only released Finn's hand when he heard Sally's voice.
"I was just in town for business and happened to be passing by," Jaxon said in an indifferent tone, his face unreadable.
"Freymoor's a huge city, Mr. Zale. Yet you managed to find us here so easily. It can't be just a coincidence, right?" Finn fixed him with a cold, hard stare.
Jaxon wasn't in a hurry to respond to Finn. Instead, he turned to Caleb, who stood beside him, and ordered, "Take the man in black away."
After giving his orders, Jaxon turned to Finn and Sally. "Since we met, how about joining me for dinner?"
Finn immediately shook his head. "No thanks. I'd rather have dinner with Sally-Bear, just the two of us."
Jaxon sensed Finn's animosity, mostly because of Brad.
"Mr. Caldwell, I find it hard to understand why you'd show such hostility toward me when we've only just met," said Jaxon.
Finn met his gaze squarely. "Frankly, I hold a rather poor opinion of the Zale family. When Sally was wrongfully imprisoned back then, did even one of you lift a finger to help her?"
Sally froze for a moment.
She didn't expect Finn to bring up the past now.
When the words "wrongfully imprisoned" struck Jaxon, his lashes quivered faintly.
His gaze finally settled on Sally's face, heavy with unspoken words.
They stood at the entrance to the bustling night market, crowds bustling past.
Yet the gloomy mood among them was a jarring contrast to the festive, lively atmosphere.
"I don't care who you are in the Zale family. From now on, stay away from Sally-Bear. Your nephew has already divorced her, so don't you dare cross the line, especially not by having her followed." Finn's voice rose, his eyes blazing with anger.
Sally instinctively reached out and tugged at Finn's sleeve. "Finn, stop it."
Finn said, "Every word I said is true! If he hadn't sent someone to tail you, how else could he have found this place? Who knows what he is really up to."
Sally's heart leaped into her throat.
She could distinctly sense the shift in Jaxon's presence. His whole demeanor had changed.
Sally quickly grabbed Finn's arm and said to Jaxon, "Mr. Zale, we have other things to attend to, so we'll be leaving now."
Without waiting for a response, she firmly tugged Finn's hand and strode decisively toward the roadside.
Jaxon watched their retreating figures, his gaze locking onto Sally's hand gripping Finn's. The anger in his eyes deepened, his expression growing even darker.
His hands at his sides clenched into fists, fingernails digging sharply into his palms.
'There's definitely more to their relationship,' he thought bitterly.
By the time they got back to Woodland Estate, it was nine at night.
After her shower, Sally stepped out onto the balcony. She had planned to enjoy the night view, only to spot a familiar figure in the darkness.
A short distance from the yard stood a small bamboo grove, its far end bordering the roadside.
Jaxon leaned casually against his car, a cigarette between his fingers. As he looked up, their gazes locked across the darkness.
The moment Sally spotted that familiar silhouette, her hand, resting on the balcony railing, tightened instinctively.
It was Jaxon. Even from a distance, in the dim light, she recognized him in a heartbeat.
Sally quickly threw on a jacket and rushed downstairs.
As she passed by the first-floor bathroom, Sally heard the sound of running water coming from inside.
'It must be Finn taking a shower...' she thought.
Sally practically skipped out of the courtyard, her steps light and eager as she hurried straight toward that familiar figure waiting in the shadows.
Sally walked right up to Jaxon, curiosity in her eyes. "How did you even know I was here?" she asked, searching his face. "Don't tell me Finn was right. Did you actually have someone following me?"
Jaxon's fingers hesitated briefly. In the next instant, he flicked away his cigarette and wrapped an arm around Sally's waist, pulling her close.
The sudden proximity sent Sally's heart racing wildly all over again.
Jaxon glared down at her, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. "What exactly is your relationship with him? Are you lovers? Or is it something more?"
Sally's brows furrowed sharply. "Mr. Zale, what nonsense are you spouting? Didn't I clarify his identity for you?"
"This is the first time you've ever held another man's hand right in front of me." Jaxon's voice rose sharply. "And you still expect me to believe there's nothing between you?"
Sally suddenly recalled that moment at the night market. In her panic, she really grabbed Finn's hand. She never expected that it would lead to such a misunderstanding.
Sally didn't want to get tangled up with him. She just wanted to get this over quickly and go back to rest. After all, she had an early train to catch the next day.
She said, "Mr. Zale, you really shouldn't ask so much. Given where we stand, I don't owe you every detail of my life..."
Before Sally could finish her sentence, Jaxon cut in, his voice sharp and accusing. "What? Trying to push me away again?"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than he abruptly yanked her closer.
