Jaxon spun around and pinned Sally against the side of the car.
Sally couldn't help but tremble slightly in shock at Jaxon's abrupt move.
She looked up at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Mr. Zale, what do you think you're doing?"
Jaxon braced his hands on either side of Sally's shoulders, leaning in as he looked down at her. "Two choices. Either come with me tonight or take me in."
Sally's eyes widened in shock.
She stared at him in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? There's no way I'm letting you stay with me!"
Jaxon's lips twisted into a sneer, his voice dropping to a low, husky whisper. "What? Worried your boyfriend might find out? Don't worry. He won't catch us."
"No way!" Sally thrust out her delicate hand, trying to push him away. "I'm not picking either option. Get out now!"
Jaxon seized her wrist, his grip tightening relentlessly. "Sally, are you really going to make me force you to choose?"
At his words, Sally's heart began to race.
She fully grasped the implication behind his words.
He made it clear. If she didn't make a choice, he'd have no qualms about humiliating her right in front of Finn.
Sally said, "I can't possibly go with you, and letting you stay with me is completely out of the question. Please, Jaxon, don't put me in this position, okay?"
Her voice trembled with a sob, and hearing it, Jaxon felt his resolve waver.
Jaxon gently cupped her cheeks, his voice softening to a coaxing whisper. "Just one kiss, and I'll go."
Sally's frown deepened. This unease in her heart just kept getting stronger.
Peering over Jaxon's shoulder, Sally looked toward the second floor, where Finn's room was.
There was a figure moving behind the window of Finn's room. He must have finished his shower and might come looking for Sally at any moment.
If Finn opened the window, he'd have a clear view of everything unfolding at the edge of the bamboo grove.
Sally gritted her teeth and wanted to end this quickly.
She squeezed her eyes shut, quickly rose on her toes, and planted a swift kiss on Jaxon's lips.
The kiss was over in an instant. Yet, that fleeting kiss was enough to unleash the smoldering desire deep within Jaxon.
Just as Sally tried to push Jaxon away, he reached out, yanked open the rear car door, and scooped her inside in one fluid motion.
The whole thing happened so fast and smoothly that Sally didn't even have time to react.
When Sally lifted her gaze again, Jaxon had already shut the door and captured her lips in a searing kiss.
Sally's eyes flew wide, disbelief flooding her gaze.
Jaxon kissed her so fiercely that Sally could hardly bear it.
She wore a thin knit cardigan over a long black slip dress. With a gentle tug from Jaxon, the strap slid down, baring her pale shoulder.
As Jaxon's lips trailed down to her bare neck, Sally's thoughts became a tangled mess.
At that moment, Sally shuddered as the realization hit her. Messing with Jaxon was like playing with fire, far more dangerous than she ever imagined.
As the black spaghetti strap slipped down, her creamy skin was fully exposed.
As Jaxon leaned in, Sally swiftly reached out and pressed her hand firmly against his chest.
"Mr. Zale," Sally said hesitantly, "I'm... on my period..."
At her words, Jaxon abruptly froze. Then he looked down at her, studying her for a brief moment.
Without a word, Jaxon swiftly adjusted her strap and helped her slip the cardigan back on.
In the dim light, Sally locked eyes with him, catching a glimpse of the restrained desire smoldering in his gaze.
This wasn't the first time Sally had caught that restrained look in Jaxon's eyes.
Every time she saw that restraint in Jaxon, something inexplicably stirred inside her.
Jaxon instinctively reached out and squeezed her calf. "Why aren't you dressed warmer, since it's that time of the month? You're wearing such a short dress. What if you catch a chill?"
Sally's heart skipped a beat. She felt her throat tighten at his sudden show of concern.
It had been ages since anyone cared for her like this.
Jaxon shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her lap, his voice husky with concern. "When's your train ticket for?"
"Three o'clock tomorrow afternoon," Sally replied.
As soon as Sally finished speaking, Jaxon cut in bluntly, "Cancel your ticket. Tomorrow morning, you're coming back with me. I'll pick you up at 10 a.m. sharp."
"Don't bother," Sally said. "I can go back by myself."
Jaxon looked at her, his tone firm. "You're in grave danger right now. No way you're going back alone."
Jaxon sat beside her, turning his head to meet her gaze. His piercing eyes radiated an icy intensity.
Only then did Sally suddenly recall the would-be assassin from that afternoon.
Sally turned to Jaxon, her eyes burning with curiosity. "Did you find out anything after you took that guy away?"
"There was no way to interrogate him here. I already had him sent back to Westmere. I'll deal with him when I get there," Jaxon said coolly, his face an impassive mask.
Sally asked, "Are you saying he trailed me all the way from Westmere to here?"
"Yes," Jaxon said, his thin lips parting slightly.
At his definitive answer, a sudden wariness flashed in Sally's eyes.
'Who on earth wants me dead?' Sally wondered, a chill running down her spine.
Jaxon asked, narrowing his eyes, "Sally, what's the real reason you came to see him?"
Jaxon's gaze shifted past her, fixing on the courtyard just outside the window.
Even though he never said the name, Sally knew right away he meant Finn.
She certainly couldn't tell him the truth that she'd come for the crystal, with the real purpose of helping him restore that broken locket.
After a brief pause, Sally replied softly, "It's been a while since I was last here. I just thought I'd drop by and take a look."
Jaxon abruptly grasped her chin, pulling her face close to his. "Then how can you claim there's nothing between you two? Is that man the real reason you won't come with me?"
Sally's upper lashes fluttered wildly, betraying her nerves. Panic was written all over Sally's face.
Seeing his reaction, Jaxon darkened his eyes. "You got nervous all of a sudden. Did I hit the nail on the head?"
Her nerves were on edge because they were so close.
The air between them grew thick with electric tension.
"Mr. Zale," Sally said, "it's getting late. You should head back and get some rest. I'll be ready for you when you come tomorrow..."
Sally shoved him away and instinctively grabbed the car door handle, desperate to get out.
Jaxon didn't stop her this time. He simply let her slip out of the car and walk away.
Jaxon thought, 'It's that time of the month for her. Even if she's with that guy, I doubt anything would actually happen.
'Even under the same roof, I can still rest easy.'
Just as Sally returned to the courtyard, she nearly bumped right into Finn, who was coming out.
Finn's eyes widened in surprise as Sally walked in through the door. "Sally-Bear, you were out. I knocked on your door for ages but no answer, so I figured you'd left..."
Sally said, "It's been so long since I was last here. I just wanted to see how the neighborhood had changed, so I took a little walk."
Sally couldn't help but tremble slightly in shock at Jaxon's abrupt move.
