Finn said gently, "If you feel like looking around, you're welcome to stay a few more days."
Finn looked at her, a hint of reluctance in his eyes.
Sally instinctively shook her head. "Sorry, but the clinic still needs me, so I can't stay long this time. I'll have to leave tomorrow morning."
Finn looked at her, puzzled. "Wait, didn't you say you had an afternoon train ticket? How come it's morning now? Did you change your booking?"
"Remember that attacker we ran into at the night market today? Mr. Zale said I'm still in danger. Since he's heading back to Westmere tomorrow anyway, he offered to take me with him." Sally headed over to the stone table nearby and sat down on a stool.
Seeing this, Finn hurried after her.
After they sat down facing each other, Finn finally met her gaze. "Sally-Bear," he began hesitantly, "there's something I'm not sure I should ask."
Sally had already guessed what he wanted to ask, but she nodded anyway. "Alright, go ahead."
Finn asked hesitantly, "Are you and Jaxon dating?"
At his words, Sally's heart suddenly leaped into her throat.
This question caught her completely off guard.
She'd thought Finn would just ask about her relationship with Jaxon, but his question turned out to be even more blunt than that.
"Why so quiet all of a sudden? Don't tell me you two are actually together?" Finn's face visibly tensed.
Sally's thoughts were interrupted. She immediately shook her head. "No way! How could that even happen?"
Finn looked at her with concern. "Sally, don't you feel like Jaxon has a strong possessive streak toward you? Haven't you noticed he might have other feelings for you?"
Sally's hands, resting on her lap, instinctively clenched for a moment.
She thought, 'I slept with Jaxon, but we were never actually together. How could I ever bring myself to tell Finn about something like this?'
Sally shook her head with a faint smile. "Finn, you're overthinking it. There's nothing like that..."
Seeing her reluctance to elaborate, Finn decided not to press further.
After a moment, Finn gently advised, "Sally, Mr. Zale does seem better than your ex-husband, but he's from the Zale family. You should keep your distance and don't do anything out of line. Got it?"
To Sally, Finn had always been like an older brother. Naturally, Sally would heed Finn's words.
But this was completely beyond her control.
Sally nodded gently. "Alright, I understand. It's getting late. You should head back and get some rest."
Finn stood up and walked back inside with her.
Feeling the room a bit stuffy, Sally slid open the balcony door.
Even though there wasn't a railing, it was just the second floor. Sally figured it probably wasn't a big deal.
Without another thought, she lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
After a while, Sally caught a whiff of something pungent and acrid. It was the unmistakable scent of burning charcoal.
Her eyes fluttered open. Suddenly, her limbs felt leaden, her whole body limp and weak.
She switched on the bedside lamp, only to find the room choked with thick smoke. Right in the center sat a brazier burning charcoal.
Thick smoke kept billowing up, quickly filling the entire room in a suffocating haze.
Sally pushed herself up and staggered toward the balcony, intending to open the main door.
But she'd barely taken two steps when her legs suddenly gave way, her entire body collapsing helplessly to the floor.
Covering her mouth and nose, Sally rushed to the balcony, only to find the door locked from the outside. It was impossible to open.
She rushed to check the windows and the main door, only to find both locked tight from the outside. There was no way out.
Sally's mind raced. 'What the hell is going on? Is someone actually trying to kill me?'
Suddenly, scenes from the night market flashed through Sally's mind.
Sally wondered, 'Could it be the same people? Who on earth wants me dead?'
Sally rushed to the door and banged on it frantically. "Finn! Finn! Help me!" she cried desperately.
There was not a sound outside, only the howling night wind rushing past the window.
Sally rushed to the bedside, grabbed her phone, and dialed Finn, but the call went unanswered.
Suddenly, the image of Jaxon flashed through Sally's mind.
She quickly dialed Jaxon's number without a moment's pause.
The phone rang several times before Jaxon finally answered, his weary voice coming through the line. "It's so late, Sally. Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Jaxon... help me..." Her vision swam as dizziness overwhelmed her. She couldn't hold on much longer.
Jaxon's tense voice came through the phone. "What's wrong?"
With her last bit of strength, Sally gasped at the phone, "Someone is burning charcoal in my room... All exits are locked from the outside... Finn's not answering... I've been banging, but no one's coming... I can barely... breathe... Jaxon..."
Meanwhile, at the Zale Group's hotel, Jaxon shot up from the couch, his grip on the phone tightening involuntarily.
Caleb, sitting beside him, shot to his feet as well.
"Stay calm, Sally. I'm coming right now." Hanging up, Jaxon grabbed his jacket and car keys and rushed out the door without a second thought.
"Mr. Zale, what's going on?" Caleb quickly got up and followed Jaxon to the door, curiosity flashing in his eyes.
After entering the hallway, Jaxon turned and glared at Caleb. "Didn't I tell you to assign someone to follow Sally? Where is that person now?"
Caleb froze momentarily and then stammered, "Mr. Zale, after we encountered that attacker this evening, I had the bodyguard send him back to Westmere."
Jaxon's expression turned thunderous as he nearly broke into a run.
Caleb pressed again, "Did something happen to Mrs. Zale?"
Jaxon tersely recounted to Caleb what Sally had just told him.
Upon hearing this, Caleb widened his eyes slightly in shock.
It was just past midnight. They had both been about to call it a night when an urgent video conference came up unexpectedly, so Jaxon had to wake Caleb and get him back to work.
If it weren't for this meeting, they would probably have already gone to bed.
Jaxon might not have been able to answer Sally's call.
Outside, the howling cold wind grew fiercer by the minute, rattling the windows.
With her last ounce of strength, Sally frantically pounded on the door.
Finally, faint sounds of movement came from the room next door.
Finn called out anxiously, "Sally-Bear, what's wrong? What happened?"
Suddenly, Finn's voice rang out from the hallway.
Sally grasped at this lifeline, her voice barely above a whisper. "Finn... help me..."
Standing in the hallway, Finn instantly saw that the door to the neighboring room was locked from the outside.
