Brad's lips curved into a faint, mocking smile as he shot her a cold, piercing look.
"Isn't saving lives and healing the wounded a doctor's sacred duty?" Sally was about to speak when Jaxon's deep voice cut in abruptly.
Sally looked up at the sound.
Jaxon, still in yesterday's suit, strolled over to them with an air of lazy nonchalance, though a faint weariness lingered on his face.
"Uncle Jaxon, you're back? You don't look well. Should we go to the hospital?" Brad sprang up from the couch and whirled to face Jaxon.
Jaxon jerked his chin toward Sally. "With a doctor right here, what's the point of going to the hospital?"
Brad shot Sally a sidelong glance and abruptly fell silent.
Jaxon leveled him with a cold, impassive stare and demanded, "What brings you here?"
"Regarding the art museum project, our company hasn't yet found a suitable design team. I'd like to collaborate with your group's design department on this. When would be a good time for us to sit down and go over the details?" said Brad.
"Some other time. I'll have my assistant contact you later." Jaxon's voice was low and heavy as he made his way upstairs.
Brad watched as Jaxon went upstairs. "Fine."
"Mrs. Zale, why are you just standing there?" Jaxon called out. "Get up here and check on me."
Hearing this, Sally quickly snapped out of her daze and followed him upstairs.
Noticing that Brad seemed about to follow him upstairs, Jaxon turned to the butler waiting in the living room. "David, please see Brad out."
"Okay, sir." David nodded.
Brad froze mid-step when he overheard their conversation. Jaw clenched, he could only watch helplessly as they ascended the stairs. Then he turned away abruptly and left.
Upon entering the master bedroom, Jaxon sank onto the sofa and deliberately placed his wrist on the side table.
Sally froze momentarily at the sight. "Mr. Zale, what are you doing?"
Jaxon shot Sally a teasing smile. "Didn't you come here to examine me? Since you're already here, how about checking on me?"
Sally frowned slightly and said, "That was just an excuse to fob off Brad. Why are you taking it so seriously? I just didn't want him to find out I stayed over at your place last night. Otherwise, it'd only cause you unnecessary trouble..."
"Actually, I'm not feeling too well." Jaxon's voice dropped noticeably, sounding slightly weak.
Only then did Sally notice how bloodshot Jaxon's eyes were.
Sally quickly stepped forward, pulled out a chair, sat down, and began to check on Jaxon.
The moment her fingers touched his pulse, Sally was startled by the intense heat radiating from his skin.
"Running a fever? Since when? You were perfectly fine when we got back from Freymoor yesterday, weren't you?" Sally's gaze met his, a hint of surprise flickering in her eyes.
Jaxon murmured weakly, "Probably just lack of sleep. I've only gotten a few hours of rest since the night you were in danger..."
"Where were you last night?" Sally asked worriedly. "Were you working on the project?"
"Yeah," Jaxon replied quietly. "There were some issues with the project yesterday. I didn't wrap things up until five a.m. I caught a quick nap at the office and woke up feeling like this."
Sally said gently, "Why don't you go take a shower first? I'll run home and then stop by the clinic to get you some medicine."
Just as Sally rose to leave, Jaxon abruptly reached out and seized her wrist.
Sally stopped as Jaxon seized her wrist.
Jaxon looked up at her with grave intensity and asked, "Could you stay tonight to look after me? I'm not feeling quite myself."
Jaxon held Sally's hand, hope shining in his eyes.
After a long moment of hesitation, Sally finally nodded. "Alright," she agreed.
"I'll have the driver take you. The mastermind still hasn't been found yet. Even though you're back in Westmere, you're still in danger." Jaxon gazed at her, concern flickering in his eyes.
Sally said calmly, "Alright."
Only then, with a satisfied nod, did Jaxon let go of her hand and watch her leave.
Sally headed home first. It was the weekend, and Abigail was there, relaxing and playing building blocks with Lillian.
Lillian sprang up and rushed toward Sally the moment she saw her. "Sally, you're finally back! I missed you so much!"
Sally couldn't help but smile as she knelt down and hugged Lillian. "I missed you too, Lillian. Did you eat well and sleep soundly while I was gone?"
Lillian beamed and said, "Of course! Abigail tells me bedtime stories every night, so I sleep like a baby."
"That's good to hear," Sally said with a gentle smile.
As Lillian went back to playing with her building blocks, Abigail approached and asked in a hushed tone, "Did you notice anything unusual on your way back? Is anyone still following you?"
Sally replied softly, "No, everything's fine. After all the commotion in Freymoor, I doubt they'll make another move anytime soon."
"Be extra careful when you go out from now on," Abigail reminded her gently. "Maybe you should skip the clinic today, just to be safe."
Sally hesitated briefly and then said calmly, "I still have to go. And I might not be back tonight."
Abigail, surprised, asked, "You're not coming back? Where are you off to?"
Sally said, "Jaxon's running a high fever. I need to bring him some medicine later, and I'll probably have to stay overnight to look after him."
Shock washed over Abigail's face. "Have you two really gotten that close already?"
Sally said, "You know how much he helped me when I was in Freymoor. Now that he needs my help, I can't just turn my back on him."
She'd tried to phrase it as delicately as possible, but Abigail could still see right through her.
Abigail said, "Alright, you go ahead. Don't worry. I will take care of everything at home."
Sally gave her a grateful smile. "Thanks for everything."
"Don't mention it. We're friends," Abigail said warmly.
After quickly gathering her things, Sally headed out to the clinic.
As she stepped out, she found the driver still waiting dutifully where she'd left him.
Every single person around Jaxon was fiercely loyal and utterly devoted to their duties.
It must be because Jaxon was such an exceptional person that his followers were so utterly devoted to him.
Before even stepping inside the clinic, Sally spotted a car parked curbside.
It was Lena's.
Lena had just arrived too, wearing a hat and mask, and was about to enter Sally's clinic.
Sally's eyes narrowed coldly as she stared at Lena's retreating figure. "What are you doing here?" she demanded sharply.
Lena whirled around at the sound, her gaze instantly locking onto Sally behind her.
After taking off her mask, Lena sized Sally up for a moment and asked, "Rumor has it you went to Freymoor and barely made it back alive. Is that true?"
Sally arched a cold, mocking smile and suddenly let out a soft laugh. "Miss Yasmin, did you come all this way just to see if I'm still alive?"
Lena shot her a look. "Come on, Mrs. Zale, do you have to be so dramatic? I may not like you, but wanting you dead? That's going too far."
Sally narrowed her eyes. "Even Brad doesn't know what happened to me in Freymoor. So how did you find out?"
