                    Sally shook her head. "No."
Carlos said, "Then I guess it's your husband."
Sally couldn't help but roll her eyes at him and scoffed, "Is he worthy of my treatment? Even if he drops dead, it's got nothing to do with me."
Carlos immediately clamped his mouth shut, not daring to utter another word.
Sally had planned to go to Longbay that afternoon, but when a critical patient arrived at the clinic, she stayed behind, worried Carlos couldn't handle it alone. Only after tending to the patient did she finally drive over to Longbay.
As dusk fell, Sally finally arrived at Longbay.
The maid had already prepared dinner, a meal for two. Jaxon must have instructed her.
Not seeing Jaxon in the living room, Sally set down the herbal medicine she'd brought and headed upstairs.
After entering the master bedroom, she found Jaxon lying in bed, looking noticeably more haggard than he had that morning.
"Mrs. Zale, why couldn't you wait for me to come get you?" Jaxon glared down at her with a stern expression, though his voice carried a hint of teasing.
Beneath that teasing tone lurked a barely perceptible undercurrent of anger.
Sally walked to the bedside and gently soothed him, "Sorry, a critical patient showed up at the clinic unexpectedly, so I stayed to assist for a while. Didn't the maid give you any fever reducer first?"
Jaxon said with a cold look, "When it's someone else, it's urgent. But when it's me, it's not important?" He pulled her close by the waist with his long, slender hand. "I'm feeling really sick too. Why do you seem like you don't care about me at all?"
Jaxon's palm was burning hot. Instinctively, Sally reached out and grabbed his wrist, her eyes widening in concern. "Why are you even hotter than you were this morning?"
Jaxon said, "I've been stubbornly waiting for you without taking my meds. If you hadn't shown up, I'd probably be dead by now."
Jaxon withdrew his hand and tucked it back under the covers, his voice low and hoarse.
Sally quickly grabbed the thermometer and took his temperature.
Sally's eyes widened in shock when she saw the thermometer. "It's 103 degrees! How are you even functioning like this? You should've taken some fever reducers by now!"
Sally hurried to the medicine cabinet, grabbed a fever reducer, fetched a glass of warm water, and immediately sat back down at his bedside.
"We can't wait for the herbal medicine to take effect. Take this fever reducer now, and I'll brew the herbs for you later." With that, Sally offered the pill to Jaxon, but he didn't reach out to take it.
"Feed me." Jaxon's tone was even, his face expressionless as he quietly gazed at her.
Sally hesitated momentarily but ultimately helped him sit up and held the medicine to his lips.
Jaxon finally lifted his gaze to meet hers and then swallowed the pill with a sip of water.
"Get some rest first," Sally said gently. "I'll go downstairs and ask the maid to make you some cereal, so you'll have something light to eat later."
Just as Sally was about to stand up, Jaxon abruptly seized her wrist and, before she could react, yanked her forcefully into his embrace.
The next moment, Jaxon gently lifted the pristine white duvet and pulled it over them, cocooning both of them beneath the soft, white sheets.
He pulled her into a crushing embrace from behind, his arms locking around her with desperate strength, as if he was terrified she might vanish at any moment.
"Just stay here and hold me for a while, okay?" His voice, impossibly tender, brushed against her ear from behind.
Sally's back stiffened momentarily, but in the end, she yielded, making no move to break free.
Neither of them spoke. Sally had no idea when Jaxon finally drifted off to sleep. Throughout the entire time, he never once turned over or let go of her.
Sally stared at the floor, her mind replaying everything that had happened between them these past few months.
Somehow, she wasn't sure how they'd gotten to this point. Yet now, even lying in his bed felt like the most natural thing in the world.
They weren't officially together but lived like lovers. It was unbelievable.
Before she realized it, Sally had drifted off to sleep in his arms, without even having dinner.
She woke up at 5 a.m. The moment Sally's eyes fluttered open, she caught sight of Jaxon's silhouette by the window.
Jaxon had woken up at some point and stood by the window, cigarette in hand, gazing absently at the pale gray dawn outside.
Hearing the rustling of the sheets, Jaxon cast a glance over his shoulder at her. Seeing she was awake, he promptly stubbed out his cigarette.
"When did you wake up?" Sally asked.
Jaxon replied, "About an hour ago, the heat woke me up. I just took a shower."
Sally got up and walked over to Jaxon. When she reached his side, she instinctively reached out and touched his forehead.
His fever had finally broken, and the pallor was gone from his face. He looked much better now.
"Mr. Zale, you've really got a strong constitution. Even with such a high fever, just one pill did the trick." Sally gazed at him with bleary-eyed sleepiness, a faint smile curling at her lips.
Just as Sally was about to lower her hand, Jaxon abruptly seized her elbow, his other hand settling firmly on her waist. In one swift motion, he pulled her flush against him.
Their bodies pressed tightly together, not a hint of space between them.
Only then did Sally notice how loosely Jaxon's robe hung, revealing much of his chiseled chest. The sight of those sculpted, masculine contours jolted her awake, and her heart raced involuntarily.
Jaxon looked into her eyes and asked softly, "Sally, when are you finally going to be with me?"
"Mr. Zale, I'm still not divorced yet. Don't you think it's a little too soon for us to be having this conversation?" said Sally.
"That's a lousy excuse," he said. "Just say the word, and I'll make sure you're divorced."
Jaxon released her hand and cupped the back of her head, his burning gaze fixed on her.
Sally's heart suddenly jumped into her throat.
She knew perfectly well that if she just said the word, Jaxon could make it happen.
But when it actually came to this moment, she was engulfed in inexplicable terror. Her heart was tangled in emotions too complex to put into words.
Jaxon pressed further, his voice low and intense. "Don't you want to be with me?"
Suddenly, Kendall's image flashed through Sally's mind.
Kendall was finalizing her divorce. She and Jaxon would probably end up together soon. Sally really didn't want to go through that heartbreak again.
Sally said, "Mr. Zale, maybe you should get your own situation sorted out first. Let's talk about this later..."
"Later? When exactly is 'later'?" Jaxon suddenly gripped her chin, pressing her against the expansive floor-to-ceiling window. "Give me a specific time!"
"Mr. Zale, with all your power and wealth, you could have any woman you want. So why are you so hung up on me? We only slept together once. Surely that's not enough to keep you hooked, is it?"
Honestly, he was never short of beautiful women. Those with perfect figures, elite backgrounds, and thriving careers were practically lining up for him.
Sally wondered, 'What's so special about me, anyway? I'm just... ordinary. Why is he so drawn to me?'
Jaxon asked, "Sally, after everything that happened between us, didn't you feel anything at all? Don't you care for me?"
