Jaxon's face darkened, his piercing gaze locked onto Sally's eyes as if searching for any hint of the truth she was hiding.
It was a shame that her face remained utterly impassive, showing nothing but indifference.
Sally met his gaze in silence. It would be a lie to say she felt nothing.
But she knew she couldn't let him get his hopes up, not yet, anyway.
Sally thought to herself, 'Honestly, even I have no idea what the future holds. Who knows if Jaxon and Kendall will end up together or not?'
"What if I said no, would you even believe me?" Sally asked.
With that, Sally couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes. Her gaze lingered on his thin lips instead.
The next instant, Jaxon pressed one hand against her shoulder while the other had already slipped beneath the hem of her skirt.
When his cold fingers slipped beneath her skirt, Sally's back stiffened instantly in shock.
Within moments, Sally's cheeks flushed as she glared at him, flustered and annoyed. "Mr. Zale, what the hell are you doing?"
Jaxon stayed silent, making it clear he had no intention of stopping.
The curtains were left open, revealing a moonlit lake outside, with the moon still hanging high above the treetops.
Yet inside the room, the air grew thick with a charged, intimate tension.
Trembling uncontrollably, Sally instinctively reached out and clutched the nearby curtain.
In moments like these, their chemistry left Sally stunned. He always knew just how to reach her, melting away every last bit of her defenses, body and soul.
When her body went limp with pleasure, Jaxon suddenly leaned in, nipped at her earlobe, and growled in her ear with barely contained fury, "Sally, is this what you call no feelings?"
That mix of shame and frustration welled up inside her again, lingering stubbornly and refusing to fade.
Sally shoved him away abruptly, her eyes blazing with equal fury as she glared at him.
She straightened her clothes and then stormed out without so much as a backward glance.
The door slammed shut with a resounding bang, reverberating through the entire space.
Jaxon didn't chase after her. He stood motionless, staring at the firmly shut door as his thoughts slowly sank into gloom.
Not long after, he heard the sound of a car engine starting up outside.
He walked to the window on the other side and looked down, just in time to see the black Porsche slowly pulling out of his driveway. It turned onto the nearby road and then gradually disappeared into the hazy twilight.
Jaxon didn't look away until the car had completely vanished from sight. Only then did he finally avert his gaze and head heavily toward the bathroom.
As Jaxon washed his hands, the water streaming over his fingertips, he felt an inexplicable, dull ache in his chest.
'Did I push too hard just now? Is that why she stormed off?' he wondered.
On the road, Sally drove aimlessly, her hands gripping the wheel as scene after scene from earlier kept replaying in her mind.
As dawn broke, Sally finally stopped to grab some breakfast before heading to the clinic. By the time she arrived, Carlos hadn't shown up yet.
At 9 AM, she received a message from Jaxon, addressed to Hazel, inquiring about the progress of the locket restoration.
As memories of what happened with Jaxon in the early hours came flooding back, Sally felt that same inexplicable anger rising in her chest.
But he was a client now. She had to be polite to him. [The locket is still being restored and will take some more time. I'll let you know as soon as it's ready. Thank you for your patience, Mr. Zale.]
Barely a moment after she hit send, her phone buzzed with another text from Jaxon. [I'm really in a hurry. Please expedite the process.]
Sally's fingers clenched around her phone for a split second.
Sally thought to herself, 'That Madonna Locket is obviously meant for a woman. Is he planning to give it to Kendall as a love token?
'Besides, Kendall is nearly done with her divorce. If that's really why he's rushing to get the locket back, well... I guess that makes sense.'
Somehow, Sally was surprised by the unexpected pang.
She recalled those charged moments they had shared in the early hours. Yet, his heart still belonged to someone else.
Sally thought, 'How is he any different from Brad?
'Sure enough, there's not a single decent man in the whole Zale family.
'The only time a man behaves is when he's six feet under.'
Carlos called out, "Sally, that guy's here again..."
There were no patients now. Sally was in the break room when, all of a sudden, Carlos's voice came from the doorway.
Carlos didn't say the name, but Sally knew instantly who he meant.
Carlos's dislike for Brad was, more than likely, all because of Sally.
Carlos used to call Brad by his full name. Then it became "the ex". Now, it was just "that guy".
"That guy? Don't I even have a name?" A deep, resonant voice came from behind Carlos, shattering the previously pleasant atmosphere.
Carlos spun around, shot him a glare, and walked off without another word.
Sally quickly put down her phone and looked up at Brad. "What brings you here?" she asked.
"Mom, is it true you bullied Lena again?" Before Brad could even open his mouth, Nick cut in abruptly.
Sally frowned slightly as she glanced down, only to realize that Nick had slipped in through the door unnoticed.
Sally sneered in her heart, 'He brought himself and Nick here just to get justice for Lena?'
"So?" Sally leaned back in her chair, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "What sob story did Lena feed you this time to get you all worked up? Did she claim I pulled a scalpel on her?"
"Mom, you just never learn. Even after all that time in prison, you're still the same. You are so vicious."
In the past, such words would have infuriated her. Now, Sally felt nothing, not even a ripple.
"That's only because Lena provoked me. I just lost my patience and wanted to scare her a bit. I never actually planned to hurt her." Sally's voice was calm and detached, betraying no emotion.
Just as Nick was about to retort, Brad cut in, "Nick, wait in the car."
Though Nick was clearly reluctant, with Brad having given the order, he didn't dare disobey.
Nick shot Sally a glare and then stormed toward the door.
Brad slammed the door shut, strode over, and grabbed Sally's wrist tightly. He demanded, "Did you really pull a scalpel on Lena?"
Sally arched an eyebrow and smirked. "Yeah."
"What the hell are you trying to do?" Brad's face darkened completely, fury flashing in his eyes. "Nick's right. After three years in prison, you haven't changed one bit. Did that sentence teach you nothing?"
Sally yanked her hand away from him, her voice low and biting. "Why are you always jumping to conclusions, Brad? You haven't changed one damn bit."
Sally had no intention of engaging with him further. Turning away, she began tidying up the break room.
Brad snapped, "That scandal from the show was still trending even yesterday. If I hadn't paid to bury it with bigger news, Lena would've been ruined by you. And you actually pulled a scalpel on her? What the hell is your motive?"
"You're questioning my motives? Maybe you should be asking what Lena's motives are!" Reaching her breaking point, Sally flung the pack of tissues straight at Brad's chest.
"What do you mean by that?" Brad stared at her, completely baffled by her words.
Sally snapped, "When I went to Freymoor, she sent people to kill me because I exposed the truth about that crystal hairpin! Did she leave that part out and only tell you the parts where I bullied her?"
