"My phone is dead." With a flat tone, Sally kept wiping the table without another word.
Jaxon suddenly grabbed Sally's wrist. In the next instant, he swept her up onto the table, forcing her legs apart until she was straddling his waist.
The sudden, intimate gesture made Sally's heart race and her cheeks flush bright red.
Sally braced herself against the table, glaring at him. "Jaxon, what the hell are you doing?"
Jaxon pulled her close with one arm around her waist, tilting her chin up with his other hand. "Are you avoiding me?"
"Why would I avoid you? What's there to avoid?" Her hand pressed against Jaxon's firm chest, their position growing more intimate by the second.
Jaxon gripped Sally's hand tighter and tighter, his gaze fixed on her. Suddenly, he fell completely silent.
Sally shot Jaxon a defiant glare, making it obvious she was still mad at him.
"I was out of line this morning. Please don't take it to heart." Suddenly, his voice softened, dropping to a low murmur.
Sally froze for a moment. This was the first time Jaxon had ever swallowed his pride for her.
She could hardly believe it. 'It's really hard to imagine that someone so aloof and domineering like Jaxon would ever actually lower his pride,' Sally thought.
Jaxon said, "Sally, all I wanted was for you to face your true feelings. I never meant to humiliate you, and I'd never dream of doing that to you..."
As the topic came up again, a fresh wave of shame washed over Sally, and her cheeks instantly flushed red.
"Mr. Zale, just drop it," Sally said through gritted teeth.
"So, will you forgive me?" Jaxon removed his hand from Sally's waist and braced both hands on either side of the table. Lowering his gaze, he intently studied her delicate features.
Sally pushed Jaxon away, quickly slid off the table, and resumed wiping with the rag. "We're not even dating, let alone married. So what's there to forgive?"
"But to me, you've always been mine." Jaxon's voice was soft, coming from behind her.
Sally's hand paused again. A wave of intense nervousness surged through her.
She abruptly changed the subject. "How's Howard's health been lately?"
Jaxon froze for a second, probably not expecting the conversation to shift so abruptly.
"He's doing great," Jaxon said. "You can go check on him again later."
"Mr. Zale, I've kept all my promises to you," Sally turned to look at him, her voice low and weighted. "But what about yours? Didn't you promise to help me reclaim Willow Haven? Why hasn't there been any progress?"
"I haven't forgotten," Jaxon said coolly. "Caleb's been keeping tabs on this, and your aunt is no pushover either. This is going to be a long, drawn-out battle, so you need to be prepared. But getting Willow Haven back for you is only a matter of time."
Sally gave a slight nod. "I was just worried you might have forgotten, so I thought I'd remind you."
"How could I ever forget anything about you?" Jaxon reached out and gently ran his fingers through her hair.
Sally happened to turn her head and met his mesmerizing gaze. For the first time, she was startled to see a trace of genuine tenderness in his eyes.
That was right. It was tenderness. Even Sally herself was startled.
'Why would Jaxon look at me with such a tender gaze?' Sally wondered, her heart fluttering at the unexpected softness.
"Actually, there's one more thing I came to discuss with you today." After letting his hand drop, he leaned casually against the edge of the table.
Sally snapped out of her thoughts and looked up at him, curiosity in her eyes. "What is it?"
"The bodyguards have tried everything on that thug we brought back from Freymoor, but he still won't talk. He's still locked up in the warehouse. How do you want to handle this?" Jaxon lit a cigarette and held it between his long, slender fingers.
Sally paused for a moment, her face unreadable. Then she said flatly, "Let him go."
Jaxon's brow furrowed sharply, his hand pausing mid-motion. "Why did you let him go?"
Sally hesitated for a moment, carefully weighing her words.
She thought, 'Jaxon still doesn't know about the crystal hairpin. If I reveal everything now, he'll realize I'm Hazel. But this isn't the right time to tell him.'
"Have you already known who's behind this?" A cold glint flashed in Jaxon's eyes.
Sally stared into his eyes, her gaze lingering for a moment. After a brief hesitation, she finally nodded. "Yes, the culprit is Lena."
Jaxon asked, "Lena? How could it be her? What happened between you two recently?"
Sally looked away to the night sky outside, her tone icy. "What else could it possibly be? It's always about Brad."
In the next instant, Jaxon abruptly pulled her closer.
"So, from what you said, you still couldn't get over Brad?" Jaxon lowered his gaze, fixing her with a look that carried a dangerous edge.
"I never said I couldn't get over him." Sally's gaze flickered with a hint of evasion.
Jaxon fixed her with a possessive stare. "Now that you've slept with me, you're mine, body and soul. No one else gets to have you, not even Brad."
As soon as he said that, Sally's lashes fluttered frantically.
That overwhelming nervousness came surging back through her.
After a few seconds to compose herself, Sally curled her lips into a cold, mocking smile. "I never realized before, Mr. Zale, just how possessive you could be."
"Better late than never, right?" Jaxon took one last drag, stubbed out the cigarette, and flicked the butt into the nearby trash can.
Sally sneered, "You're so domineering."
Her words had barely faded when Jaxon suddenly cupped her chin with one hand and, without hesitation, captured her lips in a searing kiss.
The unexhaled smoke instantly spilled from his mouth into hers, filling her with his lingering taste.
The suffocating intensity, tangled with a strange intimacy, etched this kiss so deeply into her memory that she knew she'd remember it for a lifetime.
The overwhelming urge to cough was trapped in her throat, the smoke and his kiss leaving her nearly breathless.
Jaxon sensed her distress and reluctantly let her go.
He stood before her, tracing her lips with his thumb as he tipped up her chin. In a low murmur, he said, "Once my dad's condition stabilizes, I'll tell him about your divorce from Brad..."
"No!" Sally cut in sharply. "Don't you dare say anything."
Jaxon tightened his grip on her chin. "What? Don't you want a divorce?"
Sally swallowed hard. Meeting his dangerous gaze, she spoke slowly, "No, that's not it. I want to tell Howard myself. It wouldn't be appropriate coming from you, and I can't let you get dragged into this mess because of me..."
"Worrying about me? And you still say you don't feel anything for me?" Jaxon gave a husky chuckle, lowered his head, and lightly kissed the corner of her lips. When he looked up, his eyes were blazing with heat.
Sally unconsciously clenched the hem of her skirt, and for a moment, she couldn't bring herself to say a single word.
Jaxon cupped Sally's face, his expression solemn. "Sally, from the moment we crossed that line, no matter how muddy these waters get, I'm in too deep to ever get out."
