Sally knew exactly what Jaxon meant.
She thought, 'Is he saying he'll never let me go, no matter what?
'Well, I guess I can't really complain. After all, I was the one who wanted to get close to him in the first place. Looks like I finally got what I wished for.'
"I can wait until your divorce is finalized. I won't cross the line before then, but don't you dare make me wait forever." After Jaxon let her go, he accidentally bumped into the drawer.
Sally's heart suddenly jumped into her throat.
'If the Madonna Locket slides out any further, Jaxon will definitely see it!' she panicked.
In a flash, Sally quickly hugged his waist, using her body to push the drawer shut.
Jaxon froze for a second and then chuckled, "What's this, Mrs. Zale? Are you so eager to hug me?"
Once Sally came to her senses and tried to pull away, Jaxon seized her wrist again, refusing to let go.
Jaxon leaned in, his voice low and teasing. "You know how dangerous this is, don't you? If you keep this up, I can't promise I'll be able to control myself..."
Sally pushed him away forcefully. "It's getting late, Mr. Zale. You should leave now. I need to get some rest."
Jaxon didn't tease her any further. He simply turned around and walked out.
Only after Jaxon was completely gone did Sally close the door and take out the Madonna Locket again.
The next morning, Sally woke up to her phone vibrating.
Abigail called, saying she had accidentally fallen and sprained her ankle on her way to work, and asked Sally to rush over immediately.
Sally rushed to the scene and found Abigail slumped by the roadside, unable to move her ankle.
She quickly knelt down to examine the injury, her heart sinking as she realized it looked serious.
Sally asked, "Abigail, how exactly did you get hurt like this?"
Abigail said, "I munched on a piece of bread on my way out when Carlos texted me in the morning. I looked down at my phone and totally missed the fact that there was a dog squatting right in front of me, just drooling away.
"You know how terrified I've always been of dogs. I freaked out and tried to bolt, but I missed a step, twisted my ankle, smashed my phone to pieces, and as if things weren't bad enough, that damn dog ran off with my bread."
Abigail's eyes were red as she looked up at Sally, giving her the most pitiful, puppy-dog look.
"Seriously? After everything that just happened, and you're still worried about your bread?" Sally didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
"Sally, why are you still laughing? You're so heartless. How can you laugh when I'm like this?" Immediately, big teardrops welled up in Abigail's eyes and spilled over.
"Alright, I wasn't laughing at you," Sally said gently. "Come on. Let's get you in the car and I'll take you to the hospital."
Abigail protested, "You're a doctor yourself. Why take me to the hospital? Can't we just go to your clinic?"
"You'll need an X-ray," Sally said as she helped Abigail up, placing a supportive hand on her shoulder. "Once we get the results, if it's nothing serious, I'll prescribe some topical medication for you."
Abigail wiped her tears in frustration. "What? An X-ray too? My life is already tough. This is just adding insult to injury! No way, Carlos is paying for it. It's all his fault for texting me so early!"
Words failed Sally.
Half an hour later, Carlos really did show up and paid for Abigail's X-ray.
He fussed over her the whole time, never once complaining.
Honestly, he was the ultimate pushover.
"Sally, I'll stay here with Abigail. You should head back to the clinic. When I came by earlier, there were already quite a few patients waiting at the door," said Carlos.
Sally nodded gently. "Alright, take good care of her."
Carlos nodded. "Don't worry. You can count on me."
As Sally passed by the ER, she spotted a familiar figure standing diagonally across from the hospital entrance, talking on the phone.
It was Kendall.
With her back turned, Kendall seemed engrossed in conversation with someone.
She said to the phone, "I got my divorce certificate a few days ago, left with nothing.
"Not that I ever wanted his money anyway. He knew my heart belonged to Jaxon.
"I'm at the hospital today for some traditional medicine, just getting my body ready. Once I get pregnant with Jaxon's baby, everything else will fall into place."
When Sally heard this, her hands at her sides clenched before she even realized it.
'So that's what Kendall's really after...' she thought.
For some reason, a pang of jealousy and bitterness washed over her, leaving her feeling utterly miserable.
As soon as Kendall hung up, Sally whirled around and made a beeline for the parking lot.
All afternoon, Sally felt restless and distracted, but with so many patients waiting, she had no choice but to force herself to stay focused.
That tormenting feeling left her utterly exhausted.
As Sally was heading home after work, her phone buzzed with a notification.
She picked it up and saw it was from her secondary number.
It was a message from Jaxon. [Hazel, how's the restoration of my locket going?]
Sally stared at the message, suddenly recalling the phone call she'd overheard between Kendall and others earlier that day.
After a brief pause, she quickly typed out a reply and sent it over. [Mr. Zale, you're in such a hurry. Are you planning to give it to someone special? Why don't you tell me, so I can speed things up?]
After sending the message, Sally's heart remained unsettled for a long time.
When her phone buzzed with a new message, Sally's heart leaped into her throat.
[Since we're so familiar, I might as well be frank. This locket was my mother's keepsake. My grandmother gave it to her, and she wanted me to pass it on to my future wife someday.]
Sally's heart plummeted. Her fingertips, clutching the phone, trembled slightly.
Kendall just got her divorce finalized, and now Jaxon was suddenly in such a rush to have her restore the locket. He must be planning to give it to Kendall.
'Does that mean the two of them are really about to tie the knot?' thought Sally.
After a moment's thought, Sally sent Jaxon another message. [Looks like you are going to tie the knot, Mr. Zale?]
Jaxon texted, [Yes, it's happening soon. So please finish the restoration ASAP. Thank you.]
Sally gritted her teeth. 'Wow, those two really are a perfect match, aren't they?' she thought bitterly.
Suddenly, a wave of resentment surged inside her, instantly snuffing out any desire to fix the locket for him.
But Jaxon had no idea she was Hazel. No matter how much she didn't want to do this now, she had to do it and do a damn good job of it.
Just yesterday, he was making out with her in the attic, whispering sweet nothings. Yet today, he was planning to give the family heirloom to another woman.
She had truly believed Jaxon was different from other men, but it turned out they were all the same.
He might even be an even worse womanizer.
Sally suddenly felt like she was being played for a fool by Brad and Jaxon.
'It's bad enough getting played by Brad. Am I really going to let Jaxon do the same to me?' she thought bitterly.
Just then, Sally's phone buzzed abruptly.
Once again, it was Jaxon calling.
But this time, he was calling her primary number.
Without a second thought, Sally hung up on him and shoved her phone into her bag, not wanting to deal with him for even a moment longer.
A WhatsApp message popped up on her phone.
It was from Jaxon. [Sally, why did you hang up on me?]
