Lena, with a hint of pride, said, "Didn't you know? It's family dinner night. Brad actually came all the way to the set after work just to pick me up."
Sally fixed her gaze on Lena, catching the unmistakable glint of blatant provocation in her eyes.
"You haven't even married into the family yet, yet you're constantly hanging around the family house. People would think you're already Brad's wife." Sally sneered.
Sally's words, laced with biting coldness, made Lena's brow furrow slightly for a moment.
"Sally, how could you say something like that?" Lena instantly put on a show of hurt, looking up at Brad with watery eyes full of feigned grievance.
Sally felt disgusted as she watched Lena's pretentious act. With a scathing tone, she snapped, "Even if you're in such a hurry, you should at least wait until I'm divorced from him. Haste makes waste. Don't you know that, Miss Yasmin?"
Lena theatrically raised her hand, dabbing at her completely dry eyes with exaggerated sorrow.
But when Brad saw this, he snapped at Sally, "Try to say something nice. Otherwise, hold your tongue."
Sally spoke coolly, "Isn't that the truth? We aren't even officially divorced yet, but you keep bringing her to the family house. I was just trying to remind you to avoid gossip, but if you're so ungrateful, just forget I said anything."
With that, Sally abruptly turned and headed for the door.
But Brad wouldn't back down. He strode purposefully toward her.
The next second, Brad grabbed her wrist and snapped, "I was just having a casual chat with Lena. How could you twist it into something so sordid? You really have no sense at all."
"Keep your hands to yourself." Sally snapped. Sally's face instantly darkened with annoyance.
Brad's voice dropped dangerously low, his striking eyes blazing with fury. "Even though we're still married, I won't stand for you slandering us like this."
Sally curled her lips in a mocking smile. "Or are you trying to make a scene here so all the servants know about our impending divorce, and the news reaches Grandpa even faster?"
Upon hearing that, Brad's eyelashes gave a barely perceptible flutter.
"Mom, how come you're here? Did Dad invite you?"
Just then, a child's voice suddenly piped up from the doorway.
Her gaze snapped up just in time to see Nick dart over, roughly pulling Brad's hand away as he fixed her with a wary stare.
Nick thought to himself, 'We'd agreed not to invite Mom today. That way, I could have dinner with Lena all to myself.
'I haven't had dinner with Lena in so long. Today, Dad and I bought her a little cake. I want to share it with her after dinner, just the two of us.
'But Mom suddenly showed up here, completely ruining everything Dad and I had planned.'
Sally said calmly, "I'm not here for dinner. I'm just here for your great-grandpa's follow-up."
As Sally glanced down at Nick's face, she caught a flicker of joy flash across it.
That look would have broken her heart in the past. But now, not even a ripple stirred within her.
Before they could answer, she grabbed the medical kit and hurried upstairs.
Howard was already waiting for Sally in the room. When he saw her walk in, a knowing smile played at his lips.
After checking his pulse, Sally offered a reassuring smile and said, "Your condition has stabilized. There's nothing major to worry about. Just make sure to get plenty of rest and don't overwork, and you'll gradually get better."
"Alright, thank you, Sally." Howard nodded, looking as if he had something to say but was hesitating.
Noticing his hesitation, Sally finally broke the silence and asked, "Grandpa, is there something you want to ask me?"
Howard leaned back against the headboard, seeming to struggle to find the right words.
After a long silence, he finally spoke up, "I've heard from your mother-in-law that you've been getting quite close with Jaxon..."
Sally's hands suddenly froze as she was packing up the medical kit.
'That Lauren just can't keep her mouth shut.' Sally fumed.
"How could Lauren blab about something like this to Grandpa?" Sally fumed inwardly.
"Lauren said she saw you and Jaxon coming out of Brad's room, but she was pretty vague about it, so I really don't know what happened. I haven't been able to reach Jaxon lately, so I had no choice but to ask you."
Sally swiftly packed up the medical kit, then locked eyes with Howard.
Gritting her teeth, Sally finally recounted the whole incident to Howard again.
After hearing her explanation, Howard gradually let go of his worries.
A kindly smile finally appeared on his face, followed by a gentle sigh. "What a shame..."
Sally suddenly froze for a moment, then looked at Howard and asked, "Grandpa, what do you mean by that?"
"Sally, let me be straight with you," Howard said, "From the moment I first met you, I thought you and Jaxon would make a perfect match. If you hadn't been so set on that Brad boy, I probably would've pulled some strings to arrange for you to marry Jaxon."
Sally's eyes flew wide, disbelief flashing in her gaze.
"Jaxon isn't like Brad. He takes after me in temperament, devoted to a fault. Once he falls for someone, he gives his all. That's why he's chosen to stay single all these years.
"It's not that he can't find someone. He just refuses to settle for less. He's probably been waiting all this time for the right one, but that person still hasn't come along. That's what makes it such a shame."
'This is overwhelming.' Sally thought, struggling to take it all in.
'If Grandpa ever found out I'd already slept with Jaxon, what would he think? Would he find it absurd? Or would he be approving?' Sally thought to herself.
'Jaxon clearly already has someone in his heart,' Sally thought. 'He must have never told Grandpa about this.'
Sally thought bitterly, "And Jaxon isn't nearly as devoted as you think."
A shadow crossed Sally's face as the thought struck her.
After a moment's hesitation, Sally finally blurted out, "He already has someone he likes. And if nothing goes wrong, Grandpa, you'll be expecting grandchildren."
The moment Sally spoke those words, sheer astonishment washed over Howard's face.
He stared at Sally in utter disbelief, his voice urgent as he pressed, "What did you say? Jaxon has a girlfriend? And she's pregnant?"
Suddenly, Sally realized that in a moment of anger, she might have revealed too much.
"You'd better ask him about this later. Let him tell you himself. I have other things to do, so I'll be leaving..."
