"Today's a family dinner. Jaxon should be coming home too. Why don't you stay and have dinner with us? Brad must have told you, right?" Howard looked up at her curiously.
Sally's hand, still holding the medical kit, froze for a moment.
'Brad really hadn't told me about this. If I hadn't overheard Lena mentioning the family dinner, I wouldn't have known at all,' she thought.
Not wanting to worry Howard, Sally finally said, "He told me."
Howard smiled and said, "Why don't you stay for dinner before you go?"
Finding his invitation hard to refuse, Sally finally nodded and said, "Alright."
Sally was heading downstairs to wait for dinner, but as she reached the second floor, the door to Jaxon's room suddenly swung open from the inside.
Before she could even make out who it was, a pair of large hands clamped firmly around her wrist, yanking her into the room.
"What are you doing? Let go..." Sally barely got the words out before Jaxon tightly covered her mouth and pressed her body against the door.
When Sally looked up and recognized who was standing before her, her eyes widened in shock.
Jaxon removed his hand from her mouth, then grabbed her and led her straight to the sofa.
"Jaxon?" Sally squinted at his back, her voice tinged with a hint of curiosity. "When did you get back?"
"A bit later than you, I suppose."
Jaxon pulled Sally down onto the sofa and fixed her with a piercing stare.
That look made her skin crawl, as if every hair on her body stood on end.
She deliberately scooted back a little and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"You hung up on me yesterday and ignored my texts." Jaxon tightened his grip on her wrist, his voice laced with menace. "What do you mean? What did I do to piss you off this time?"
Sally's brow furrowed in discomfort. "Let go of me."
"Answer me first, then I'll consider that."
'There's no way I can tell him what I'm really thinking right now,' Sally thought to herself.
After a moment's hesitation, she came up with an excuse. "I was just really busy yesterday and didn't have time to answer your call. Then I completely forgot about it after I got back."
Jaxon let out a low, husky laugh. "And the texts? Forgot those too?"
"Yeah, after my shower, it just completely slipped my mind..."
Sally replied with perfect seriousness, so convincing that anyone else would have bought it.
But she was facing Jaxon. That kind of excuse might fool others, but never him.
"Go on, keep making up stories. Try a better excuse, and maybe I'll believe you," Jaxon said, his tone laced with sarcasm.
Jaxon released her hand, then grasped her chin with one hand.
The sudden closeness made Sally's heart pound wildly. "What are you trying to do?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Jaxon's enchanting eyes were fixed directly on hers. "What do you think?" he shot back, his tone carrying a hint of aloof indifference and a casual nonchalance.
Yet his words set Sally's nerves on edge for reasons she couldn't explain.
The next moment, Jaxon closed the distance and, without hesitation, pressed his lips fiercely against Sally's in a bruising kiss.
He kissed her with wild urgency, leaving Sally breathless for several agonizing seconds.
There was no mistaking the hint of punishment in the way he kissed her.
Just then, a sudden knock came at the door. "Jaxon, dinner's ready," called Brad from outside.
Sally's heart leapt into her throat.
It was Brad.
Sally instinctively pressed her hands against Jaxon's chest, trying to push him away.
But Jaxon had no intention of letting her go. Instead, he grew even more unrestrained.
His lips landed on her neck, while his long fingers roamed possessively over her body.
The punishing intensity of his touch nearly made her cry out.
Desperate, she bit down on his shoulder, and only then did he finally ease up a little.
"Jaxon, Jaxon..."
Outside, the persistent knocking at the door continued.
Inside, the air grew thick with tension and unspoken intimacy.
Sally lowered her voice to a whisper only the two of them could hear. "The door isn't locked. At least answer him. If he comes in, we're both done for."
Jaxon finally stopped.
He braced his hands on either side of the sofa and snapped toward the door, "I'm resting. I'll be down in a moment."
Brad, who was reaching for the doorknob, froze abruptly when he heard Jaxon's voice from inside.
"Okay, just come down soon, Jaxon..." Brad called.
"Hmm." Jaxon leaned back against the seat and said no more.
As Brad's footsteps faded away, Sally finally let out the breath she'd been holding.
Jaxon suddenly bit her lip hard, then looked up with a smirk. "What? So afraid he'll find out about our little affair?"
Affair.
The word echoed in her ears, sending her heart leaping into her throat all over again.
Ever since she got involved with Jaxon, she's felt like her nerves were about to give way.
She quickly reached out and thumped his chest hard. "Jaxon, you jerk! What was that kiss for? This is the Zale family house, not Longbay. You can't just act however you please here!"
"Will you still ignore my calls and texts?" Jaxon pressed.
Sally was so mad she couldn't even find the words to respond.
Noticing her prolonged silence, Jaxon started to move closer again.
Sally quickly blurted out, "Fine, I promise I'll answer next time."
Satisfied with her answer, Jaxon finally released her.
Jaxon was about to light a cigarette when Sally suddenly asked with curiosity, ", Mr. Zale, has Ms. Harper finalized her divorce?"
His hand holding the lighter paused for a moment before he replied softly, "Yeah, she got the divorce papers last week."
'He even knows exactly when she got her divorce papers?' Sally fumed inwardly.
A sudden surge of anger welled up in her chest, burning hotter by the second. Without thinking, she snatched the cigarette right from his lips.
"Why'd you take my cigarette?" Jaxon turned to her, clearly puzzled.
After standing up, she tossed the cigarette into the trash can beside her, lowered her gaze, and looked at him earnestly, "Smoking too much is bad for your health and for kids' development. You really should cut back."
Before Jaxon could respond, Sally quickly got up and headed toward the doorway.
Sally slammed the door shut behind her, the sharp sound reverberating through the entire space.
Jaxon Zale froze for a moment.
'She and Brad haven't even finalized their divorce yet, and she's already planning for a baby? Isn't that moving a bit too fast?' Jaxon thought.
The corners of his lips curved into an involuntary smirk.
Jaxon quickly stood up, his gaze unintentionally falling on the pack of cigarettes on the table.
After a moment's thought, he picked up the whole pack and tossed it into the trash can.
'She's probably right about this...' he mused to himself.
