After dinner, Abigail mentioned that her child wasn't feeling well, so Sally hurried home right away.
Nick has school tomorrow, so Brad took Lena and Nick home first.
At the table, only Howard and Jaxon remained.
After setting down his chopsticks, Howard fixed his gaze on Jaxon.
After a brief pause, he asked, "Jaxon, you're not in a hurry to leave yet, are you?"
"No," Jaxon said in his usual calm tone.
"Let's take a walk in the garden together," Howard looked at Jaxon, his eyes gleaming with a hint of anticipation.
Since returning to the country, Jaxon always made time to visit his father despite his hectic schedule, though each visit was rushed. It had been ages since they last spent any real, relaxing time together.
Jaxon rose from his chair, strode over to his father's side, helped him up, and then slowly accompanied him toward the doorway.
Once they reached the garden pavilion, Howard tentatively asked, "I hear you've found someone special. When are you planning to bring her home?"
Howard had just finished speaking when Jaxon suddenly stopped in his tracks.
He whirled around to face his father. "How did you find out about this?"
Howard also froze, his back going rigid for a moment.
After composing himself, he looked up at Jaxon and said, "So it's true? You've really found someone you like? From which family is this young lady?"
Facing his father's persistent questions, Jaxon suddenly fell silent.
"Come on. Which family is she from?" Howard pressed. Howard's eyes sparkled with curiosity as he stared at his son, waiting for an answer.
Jaxon furrowed his brow for a moment. "Who told you about this?"
"Answer my question first, then I'll tell you," Howard countered.
He stood his ground, completely unmoved by his son's words.
Jaxon knew his father too well. If he didn't say anything today, Howard would relentlessly keep asking until he got the answer he wanted.
"She's an exceptional woman," Jaxon said.
Howard asked, "So, you're saying her family background is probably just average? Not a match for ours in terms of social standing..."
Jaxon replied in a deep, steady voice, "That idea of being 'matched social standing' might make sense for others, but not for me. To me, true compatibility is about her character, her abilities, and her sincerity, not some superficial family pedigree."
After hearing Jaxon's explanation, Howard let out a hoarse chuckle.
Among his three sons, it was this youngest one, Jaxon, who held the most special place in his heart. For Jaxon's character was strikingly similar to his own.
That's why, all these years, he'd never pressured Jaxon to get married.
He knew his son too well. Unless Jaxon truly fell in love and wanted to marry of his own free will, no amount of persuasion would ever work.
"Well, can I at least know who she is? What's her name..."
Before Howard could finish, Jaxon calmly interrupted, "You'll meet her sooner or later. No need to rush. And trust me, once you see her, you'll absolutely like her."
Howard paused, lost in thought for a moment before asking, "So, between Sally and this woman you like, who do you think is better?"
The abrupt question caught Jaxon off guard for a moment.
Jaxon's lashes fluttered faintly, but with his gaze lowered, Howard failed to notice.
"Well? Tell me. Who's better? Sally Zale or the woman you fancy?" Howard pressed.
Jaxon thought, 'Now that's a tricky question... How can you compare someone to themselves?'
Jaxon paused briefly, then shot back, "Seems you're quite fond of Sally?"
Howard replied, "Of course. Sally is not only kind-hearted but also has upright conduct. Moreover, she's family-oriented. And above all, she's an outstanding doctor." He let out a soft sigh.
"It's just Brad doesn't know how to cherish her. He's ruined what could have been a wonderful marriage, and he'll regret it."
At the mention of Brad, Howard suddenly became extremely agitated.
Jaxon was worried his father might get so worked up that it would harm his health.
Subconsciously, he reached out and gently patted Howard's back. "Now, Dad, every man must find his own path. If Brad doesn't know how to cherish what he has, someone else will. Why exhaust yourself worrying about it?"
Howard looked at Jaxon and said seriously, "Jaxon, tell me the truth. Does Sally still plan to divorce Brad? At dinner just now, it seemed like they were just together in name only. They didn't look like a reconciled couple."
Jaxon thought, 'Their divorce is inevitable, but Sally said she'd tell Father herself. It's not my place to speak for her.'
He said coolly, "You should ask them, not me."
Jaxon's expression darkened slightly, a trace of displeasure crossing his features.
Gripping Jaxon's hand, Howard said, "Why don't you talk to Brad and tell him to straighten up? He's taking such a wonderful wife for granted. If they really get divorced, he'll regret it for the rest of his life."
Jaxon retorted sharply, "So you're saying Mrs. Zale should settle for less and stay with Brad just to spare him future hardships?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Howard swiftly looked up, locking gazes with Jaxon.
In Jaxon's eyes, he saw an icy glint he'd never witnessed before. It was the first time Howard had seen Jaxon stand up for someone like this.
Noticing the change in his father's expression, Jaxon took a moment to calm down before realizing that he had been overly emotional.
He cleared his throat, then smoothly shifted the conversation. "Now, shouldn't you tell me? Who told you I've found someone special?"
"Speaking of that, haven't you been spending too much time with Sally lately?"
It suddenly dawned on Jaxon. He frowned at his father and asked, "Wait, are you saying Sally was the one who told you about this?"
"Yes. She told me herself. She mentioned it in passing when she came by for my follow-up." Howard's brow furrowed slightly. "Jaxon, she's your nephew's wife. You should keep a proper distance to avoid gossip."
Jaxon could still hear his father's words echoing in his ears.
A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. 'So it turned out that she had been the one to bring up this matter,' he thought to himself.
"Jaxon," Howard pressed, "are you even listening to me?"
