Howard's voice came from right in front of him.
Jaxon's train of thought was interrupted. He looked up and gave Howard a cool, indifferent glance.
After a few seconds, Jaxon said coolly, "Only people with nothing better to do gossip behind others' backs."
"I'm just looking out for you two. Given your situation, it's really not a good idea for you to be so close right now... "
Howard kept talking, but Jaxon wasn't really listening, his mind was completely consumed by thoughts of her.
Jaxon thought, "We've already slept together. What's there left to hide?"
After Jaxon escorted Howard back to his room, it was already quite late.
Jaxon checked his watch. Eventually, he drove to Serenity Building.
Just as Sally had lulled Lillian to sleep, her phone on the desk suddenly rang.
She glanced down at her phone and froze for a moment when she saw the caller ID.
'Why is he still calling me at this hour?' thought Sally.
As soon as she picked up the phone, Jaxon's commanding voice came through, "Come open the door."
Sally asked, "What are you doing here this late at night?"
Jaxon said, "Something urgent. Get down here now."
Sally got up from the bedside, hung up the phone, and hurried downstairs.
Since Abigail injured her leg, she's been going to bed pretty early. She's probably already asleep by now.
Sally rushed downstairs, flung the front door open, and there stood Jaxon at the entrance.
Jaxon walked in and gave her a curious look. "What's wrong with Lillian? Is she feeling unwell?"
Suddenly, Sally remembered that she had left after dinner tonight, using the excuse that Lillian wasn't feeling well.
"Just got an upset stomach. She probably ate something bad at school," Sally explained.
Jaxon instinctively glanced toward the second floor, his gaze laced with concern. "How serious is it?".
"It's nothing too serious. I already gave her some medicine, and she's asleep now," Sally said, her tone curious. "Are you going upstairs to check on her?"
Jaxon shook his head. "No."
"Did you come all the way here this late just to see Lillian?" Sally studied him with a hint of curiosity.
Jaxon suddenly lowered his gaze, fixing her with an inscrutable look.
The next moment, he strode forward abruptly, his strong hand shooting out to seize her firmly by the wrist.
Before Sally could react, Jaxon had already grabbed her and was quickly pulling her toward the downstairs bathroom.
Click.
As the door clicked shut behind them, Sally looked at Jaxon, bewildered. "Jaxon, what are you dragging me into the bathroom for?"
Jaxon looked at her impassively, then suddenly swept her up into his arms, cradling her hips with his hand, and placed her directly on the bathroom counter.
Sally's heart suddenly leaped into her throat.
Losing her balance, Sally instinctively threw her arms around Jaxon's neck.
He demanded, "Was it you who told my father I have someone special?"
His eyes darkened with a dangerous intensity.
At his words, Sally's eyelashes fluttered rapidly as she tried to process what he'd just said.
Sally thought, 'Didn't expect Grandpa to grill Jaxon about this so soon. Seriously? He couldn't even wait a bit?'
Jaxon narrowed his eyes. "Well? Cat got your tongue?"
His voice broke her train of thought. She raised her gaze, meeting his with detached indifference.
After a brief hesitation, Sally finally spoke, "Wasn't I just telling the truth? He was bound to find out sooner or later. After all, you two are practically engaged..."
Jaxon frowned, perplexed. "You two? What do you mean by 'you two'?"
Sally said, "Cut the act, Jaxon. Sure, we slept together, but it wasn't my first time, and I'm not a clingy woman. If you two are really getting together, you have my sincere blessings."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Jaxon instinctively reached out, gripping her chin firmly and forcing her to meet his intense gaze.
When Sally raised her gaze, she caught the confusion in Jaxon's eyes.
'Seriously? Even now, he's still pretending... ' she thought to herself, exasperated.
Sally said, "Mr. Zale, let's keep our distance from now on. We need to end this ambiguous relationship. What happened in your room today... Please don't ever do that again."
The truth finally dawned on Jaxon. Slowly, he realized that when Sally had talked about the children in the room, she might not have been referring to the two of them, but to someone else.
Jaxon said anxiously, "Sally, wait, have you misunderstood something?" Jaxon's grip on her chin tightened relentlessly.
Sally suddenly curled her lips into a cold, mocking smile.
She thought, 'We've done so many reckless things. It all felt like a dream. But now, it's time to wake up.
'Otherwise, if I wait until Jaxon sends me a wedding invitation to end things, it'll be far too late.
'I've already suffered through three years in one hellhole. No way I'm dumb enough to fall into another one again so soon.'
"Mr. Zale, stop this. Let's end whatever it is between us. All of it..."
"Weren't things fine just earlier tonight? What's with this sudden change of heart?"
Jaxon stared at her with a puzzled expression, suddenly realizing that something seemed wrong.
"Mr. Zale, it just hit me. We've done so many reckless things. Please, let's stop this entanglement. Let me go, and set yourself free as well."
"Earlier this evening, you told my father I have someone special. Exactly who is this woman you were referring to?"
At his words, Sally's heart leaped to her throat again.
Suddenly, she couldn't quite understand why he was asking such a question.
'He and Kendall are practically engaged, yet he's humiliating me like this.' she fumed to herself.
"It's getting late, Mr. Zale," Sally Zale said. "You should head back now. I need to get some rest. I have to be at the clinic early tomorrow."
The words had barely left her lips when Sally shoved Jaxon aside and scrambled down from the bathroom counter.
Just as her fingers brushed the doorknob, his hand shot out, clamping down on her wrist with an iron grip.
The next moment, Jaxon pinned her firmly against the wall.
His voice dripped with dangerous intensity. "Now that things have come to this, you want to end it with me? You really think I'd let you walk away?"
"Or what? Do you want to be my secret lover forever, Mr. Zale?" Sally glared up at him, her eyes icy with fury.
"So you finally admit there's something between us?" Jaxon worked his jaw, then let out a low, husky laugh. "Took you long enough... my little lover."
"My little lover."
As those words reached her ears, her spine stiffened for a moment.
"Let go of me. Get out now." Sally clenched her jaw, forcing out the words with finality, "Starting tomorrow, don't come here anymore."
