Jaxon's lips curled into a dangerously captivating smile. "I haven't even asked you to make our relationship official, and you're already so eager to push me away?" His voice was low and laced with threat.
"But starting an affair with me isn't a game. Once you're in, getting out is a hell of a lot harder."
Sally instinctively clenched the hem of her dress, her fingertips trembling ever so slightly as Jaxon's words sank in.
Chances are, nothing has happened between them. But at this rate, it might not be long before something does. But no matter how much he attracts her or how skilled he might be in bed, she wouldn't stoop to fighting with others over a man.
Besides, she's not even worthy of vying for him in the first place. Jaxon's heart most likely already belonged to Kendall.
Jaxon said, "I'll let it slide this time. But if you ever dare say we're done again, I won't go easy on you. Got that?"
After saying this, Jaxon suddenly planted a light kiss on her lips, and just as quickly let her go.
He threw open the door and left without a backward glance.
For the first time, Sally felt Jaxon was actually a much more formidable man to deal with.
"Once you get entangled with him, breaking free is anything but easy," she realized.
By the time she reached the living room, he was nowhere to be seen.
She quickly deadbolted the front door, then headed straight upstairs to the second floor.
She had planned to return to her room to rest when the image of the Madonna Locket surfaced in her mind.
'If I really want to see through Jaxon's heart,' Sally thought, "maybe that Madonna Locket is the key."
'If Jaxon gives it to Kendall, it means their relationship is getting serious. But if he doesn't, maybe there's still a chance for me after all,' Sally thought.
After all, she couldn't deny her selfish hope...
She thought, 'Just let his scales tip my way, even just a little.'
Sally hurried up to the second floor. Just as she reached the attic, her phone buzzed again with a text notification in her pocket.
She glanced down and saw the message was from her secondary line.
It was from Caleb.
[Ms. Hazel, how is the restoration of the Madonna Locket progressing? Mr. Zale just called to urge that it be completed as soon as possible.]
When Sally read the message, her heart plummeted like a stone.
She fumed, 'Seriously? He just left my place and he's already calling to rush me about the Madonna Locket? What a joke. One moment he's acting like he can't bear to leave me, and the next he's already thinking about giving it to Kendall.'
A cold wave of despair suddenly washed over her, lingering long after and refusing to fade away.
She glanced at the time. It was already.
With a resigned sigh, Sally took out the Madonna Locket and sat down to begin restoring it for Jaxon.
Sally thought to herself, 'There was no avoiding this. I'd have to face it eventually. If Kendall is truly the one he loves... then I guess I'll just have to accept it.'
The next morning, when Sally woke up, she almost missed the time to send Lillian to school because she had stayed up all night repairing the Madonna Locket for Jaxon and only fell asleep very late.
After a quick wash, she frantically threw on some clothes, skipped breakfast, and hurried Lillian to school.
After dropping Lillian off at school, Sally turned around and walked back to her car.
"Mrs. Zale."
Just as she was about to pull the car door open to get in, she was called out to by a voice that was both familiar and strangely foreign.
Hearing the voice, Sally stopped in her tracks and quickly turned to locate its source.
The moment she saw that flawlessly made-up face, her back instinctively stiffened for a brief moment.
Standing not far away was none other than Kendall.
"What are you doing here?"
Sally released the door handle and turned back to look at her, confusion flickering in her eyes.
"I'm here to drop off my niece," applied Sally. Kendall gave her a quick up-and-down glance and couldn't help but cover her face with her hand, chuckling, "Mrs. Zale, is this how you usually present yourself in public? So unkempt?"
She looked Sally from head to toe, her slender fingers gesturing slightly
Sally instantly realized what she meant.
'She probably thought I looked extremely disheveled in my current unkempt state.' Sally thought.
Normally, when Sally went to the clinic, she'd apply a bit of light makeup. Even on rushed days when she skipped it, she'd at least swipe on some lipstick to brighten up her complexion.
But she was in such a hurry this morning, she even skipped lipstick.
There was just no way she could ever measure up to the woman standing before her.
'Murphy's Law,' Sally thought with a sigh. 'When I'm all dolled up, there's never anyone around. But the moment I look like a mess, of course I run into Kendall.'
Instinctively, Sally reached up and ran her fingers through her hair. Then, with a detached tone, she said, "So what? Does it have anything to do with you?"
Kendall sneered, "Is this really how you usually present yourself to Jaxon?"
Kendall's brows drew together in an instant, her contempt for Sally plain as day.
Sally's face darkened instantly when she caught the look on Kendall's face.
"I don't have the patience to stand here discussing these pointless things with you..."
With that, she turned away and pulled open the car door again.
"Men are all visual creatures. There isn't a single man who would fancy a woman who doesn't take care of her appearance, especially a man like Jaxon." Kendall's cold voice suddenly came from behind, "Just on this point alone, I'm a notch above you."
The implication was that Kendall had probably already guessed that there was something going on between Sally and Jaxon.
Sally said, "If you really see me as your rival, you shouldn't be saying these things to me."
Kendall sneered, "The reason I'm telling you all this is just because I don't want your presence to lower the standards of the women around Jaxon." Her voice dripped with contempt.
Though Sally tried hard to shrug off Kendall's words, she couldn't deny they'd gotten under her skin a little.
Sally didn't bother to respond. Without another word, she got into her car and drove off.
After arriving at the clinic, Sally took out that set of backup cosmetics and started working on her face in the mirror.
After finishing her flawless makeup, Sally suddenly felt a surge of confidence and energy.
As she pulled open the door and stepped out, she met a slightly stunned gaze.
Carlos gave her a once-over, eyes widening. "Wow, Sally, this is the first time I've seen you in full glam makeup. You look stunning."
A faint blush crept onto her cheeks. "Stop teasing and get back to work."
In fact, before going to prison, Sally had been the picture of elegance, never caught without full makeup, her skin maintained to a flawless, dewy perfection.
Maybe it was just that she had been through too much, especially those years in prison, and all of it had completely snuffed out her once-strong desire to look good.
As evening approached, Carlos left early on personal business, leaving Sally alone in the clinic.
Suddenly, a familiar voice called from outside the door, "Sally."
At the sound, Sally turned and saw Brad standing in the doorway.
Sally's brows knitted instantly. "What are you doing here?"
Brad quickly walked over and said, "I have a friend whose dad's been having trouble with his leg. He's seen a bunch of doctors, but none of them could help. When would you have time to take a look at him?"
