Sally's expression darkened slightly.
Normally, she wouldn't agree to this. But this concerns an old man's health. As a doctor, she couldn't just turn a blind eye.
Sally looked up at Brad, her voice low and heavy. "Are they home right now? How far away is it from here?"
He said, "It's not far, just a couple of miles away. Are you able to go over now?"
"Alright, I'll go with you now to assess the situation. I'll have a treatment plan ready by tonight."
"Alright." Brad headed for the door. "Get your things ready. I'll wait for you outside. We'll just take one car, and I'll drive you back tonight."
"Mm-hmm," Sally softly agreed.
There aren't any patients at the clinic right now. It was the perfect time to go and treat him. If she waited any longer, she probably wouldn't be able to make it.
Grabbing her medical kit, Sally hopped into Brad's car, and together they headed straight to the old man's house.
When Sally met Brad's friend, she realized she'd seen him before.
'He looks so familiar,' she thought. 'Maybe from some party.'
Brad turned to Sally and introduced, "Sally, this is Mr. Chase. His father is the one with the leg condition."
Mr. Chase extended his hand, and Sally quickly shook it. "Hello," she said with a polite smile.
After exchanging greetings, she was led to old man's room.
They both stood quietly to the side, watching as she examined the old man.
After examining the old man's leg, Sally looked up at Mr. Chase beside her and asked, "Was there a previous injury to his leg?"
After he fell and injured himself a year ago, he's been bedridden ever since, "Mr. Chase explained. "We've taken him to so many hospitals, but they all said there was nothing they could do.
"Even the most renowned orthopedic specialists in Westmere said surgery was the only way for him to recover."
"This injury damaged the femoral artery in his leg, compressing the nerves and causing pain," she explained. "In such cases, regular acupuncture sessions are necessary for recovery."
"So you're saying there's still a real chance he could recover?" Mr. Chase's voice trembled with barely contained joy.
Sally nodded decisively. "Full recovery is possible. Given your father's advanced age, surgery would pose significant risks, so acupuncture is the most appropriate option."
"That's exactly what we thought," Mr. Chase explained. "We searched everywhere for traditional medicine practitioners, but none of them could help.
"Just a couple of days ago, we heard Mr. Zale mention that his wife is highly skilled in medicine, so we asked him to bring you here for a consultation."
"My wife."
The words caught Sally off guard, and her hand holding the medical kit froze for a split second.
'So this is how he introduces me to others?' she thought in surprise, and subconsciously turned her head to look at Brad beside her.
Brad, however, showed no reaction. He just kept his eyes on his phone, typing out a message as if nothing had happened.
Sally looked at Mr. Chase and said, "Starting tomorrow, I'll draw up a treatment plan. It might not always be me who comes here each time. It could be me, or it could be another doctor from our clinic. But rest assured, they're highly skilled as well."
"I'll update the other doctor about your father's condition. If I can't make it, he'll come instead."
After hearing him out, Mr. Chase nodded in satisfaction. "That's fine. Just make the arrangements as you see fit. We trust you."
Sally gave a faint smile.
That faint smile of hers caught Brad's eye from across the room.
"She's actually pretty when she smiles... " Brad mused.
Around nine o'clock, they left the Chase family house. Brad drove Sally home himself.
Sally stared out the window, lost in thought.
Tonight was probably the most pleasant evening they'd shared since their divorce troubles began.
Brad Zale's deep voice suddenly pulled Sally from her thoughts."Thank you for coming with me tonight," he said quietly. She turned at the sound, meeting his intense gaze.
After a moment, she smirked coldly and said, "I didn't come with you for your sake. Healing the sick and saving lives is our duty as doctors. This has nothing to do with you." Her voice was low and steady, her face utterly impassive.
After hearing her words, Brad's grip on the steering wheel tightened for a moment.
"Sally, must you put it so harshly? When I'm speaking to you nicely, can't you at least answer me properly?" Brad said, his tone edged with displeasure.
Sally averted her gaze, staring straight ahead. "There's nothing left for us to talk about. If it weren't for the old gentleman's health, I wouldn't have come with you."
Brad was visibly irritated, but the red light ahead had already turned green. He had to tear his gaze away and focus on driving.
When they arrived at her doorstep, Sally opened the car door to get out, but suddenly paused and turned to Brad.
"By the way, Mr. Zale, I'd appreciate it if you could adjust how you refer to me in public. Since we're about to get divorced, calling me your wife isn't really appropriate. Let's avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings."
"We're getting divorced, but we're not divorced yet, are we? As long as we're still legally married, even if it's just for one more day, you're still my wife. There's nothing improper about me calling you that." His voice was low and controlled, betraying no emotion.
Sally had no patience left to argue with him. She flung the car door open and quickly got out.
With a loud slam, she shut the door and stepped aside, watching as he drove away. Only when his car disappeared from view did she finally look away.
As she looked away, her eyes landed on an all-too-familiar car parked under a tree across the street.
The moment the window rolled down, her steps froze.
Jaxon sat in the back seat, holding a cigarette, his face wreathed in swirling smoke.
From this distance, Sally couldn't make out the expression on his face.
Sally shifted her gaze forward and spotted his assistant, Caleb, standing under the tree, talking on the phone.
She knew he must have come for something important at this hour. After a brief hesitation, she eventually walked toward the car.
Once Sally was inside the car, Jaxon flicked away his cigarette and quickly rolled up the window.
Jaxon's gaze locked onto Sally's face in the faint window light.
Sally felt intensely uneasy under his sudden, piercing stare.
Sally instinctively blurted out, "Is there something urgent that brings you here so late?"
Ever since their awkward encounter in the restroom, something between them had subtly shifted. Even Sally herself couldn't quite put her finger on it.
Jaxon looked at Sally and asked, "Were you two on a date tonight?"
Without warning, Jaxon's strong hand gripped her waist, yanking her abruptly closer.
