The sudden closeness sent Sally's heart racing wildly in her chest.
"We're getting divorced. There won't be any dates. You're just imagining things." she replied.
Sally subconsciously shifted slightly to the side, putting some distance between them.
He grasped her chin firmly, lowering his head to gaze down into her eyes. He studied her face intently, as if trying to see right through her, searching for something hidden beneath the surface.
After a few seconds, Jaxon finally spoke, his voice low and suspicious. "If it wasn't a date, why the flawless makeup?"
Sally froze for a split second.
Only then did she realize that she had indeed put on a full face of makeup today. She never expected that it would lead to such a misunderstanding on his part.
"Since when is full makeup only for dates?"
"You never bother with such glamorous makeup when you're with me. But for Brad, you really go all out..." Jaxon said, his deep voice tinged with unmistakable jealousy.
Sally smirked, her lips curling slightly. "Mr. Zale, am I mistaken, or do I detect a strong whiff of jealousy here? Are you jealous of Brad?"
Jaxon looked at her and said, "Given our current relationship, don't I have every right to be jealous?" Jaxon's grip on her chin tightened sharply, his fingers digging in too hard.
Sally winced, her brows furrowing in discomfort.
After a brief pause, she said coolly, "Jaxon, you're hurting me."
At her words, Jaxon quickly let go of her chin, his hand sliding down to settle possessively on her waist.
"From now on, you're not allowed to go out alone with Brad unless I say so. Is that clear?" Jaxon Zale said sternly, his slender fingers gently caressing her waist.
Sally suddenly couldn't resist teasing him. With a playful smile, she replied, "Oh? So if I get your permission first, then it's perfectly fine?"
As her voice trailed off, his face instantly darkened, an icy glare in his eyes.
"Try me," he warned.
The dangerous edge in his tone made her think twice about testing his limits.
"Relax, I was just teasing you. Why so serious? We're getting divorced anyway. It's not like there's any reason for us to meet up alone."
She raised her hand to press against his chest, putting a safe distance between them.
Jaxon demanded, "Then why did you two go out alone tonight? Don't I deserve an explanation?"
Sally stared at him quietly, her tone laced with icy sarcasm. "In what capacity are you demanding an explanation from me? As my lover?"
"Sally." Jaxon's eyes darkened with barely contained fury.
It was clear she'd really crossed the line this time.
Sally responded tactfully, "Brad has a friend whose father injured his leg. Apparently, modern medicine couldn't help, so Brad mentioned me. Tonight, we just went to check on the old man and develop a preliminary treatment plan for him."
Jaxon narrowed his eyes. "Is that all?"
"That's it."
At her clear answer, the tension in Jaxon's brow suddenly eased a little.
Sally still had to go back that night to repair Jaxon's Madonna Locket, so she didn't have much time to waste with him.
She made up an excuse and tried to leave. Just as she reached for the car door handle, the man seized her wrist again.
In the next second, he yanked her forcefully back toward him.
Before she could react, Jaxon cupped her face and crushed his lips against hers in a sudden, searing kiss.
"What is he doing?" Sally thought, her heart pounding as her eyes widened in shock, disbelief flashing in her gaze.
His kiss was deep and possessive, his tongue insistently seeking entry.
His hand cradled the back of her head, fingers tangling in her hair as the kiss grew even more intense.
Just at this moment, an ill-timed cell phone ringtone suddenly blared out.
It was Jaxon's cell phone that was ringing.
Sally shoved him back abruptly, her cheeks flushed. "Mr. Zale, you should get that call."
Jaxon reluctantly pulled out his phone. The moment he saw the caller ID, his face darkened.
Standing nearby, Sally naturally noticed the note on the caller ID.
It was a call from Kendall.
Seeing that he didn't press the answer button for a long time, Sally asked curiously, "Mr. Zale, aren't you going to answer it?"
Jaxon finally answered the call, switched to speakerphone, and tossed the phone aside.
A soft, delicate voice came through the phone. Kendall pleaded weakly, "Jaxon, I'm not feeling well. I've been throwing up all night. Can you come over and take care of me?"
"Throwing up."
The word echoed in her ears, and she suddenly found her hands clenching tightly.
She thought, 'Back when I was pregnant, I used to throw up all the time.
'Is she pregnant?
'Whose child would it be?
'Jaxon's?'
The thought startled her. She couldn't believe these ideas were even crossing her mind.
'Have things really moved that fast between them?' she pondered.
Then again, when she thought about it, it wasn't all that surprising.
It has been a long time since Jaxon slept with her. It's perfectly normal for men of their age to have certain sexual desires.
Yet for some reason, just thinking about all this made her inexplicably irritated.
A wave of frustration swept over her, lingering stubbornly like an unwelcome guest.
"Alright, I'm coming now." Jaxon responded decisively, not a trace of hesitation in his voice.
Sally looked at Jaxon in disbelief, searching his eyes for any telltale signs. But to her frustration, his gaze gave nothing away.
After a moment of silence, Sally finally spoke, her voice cool and distant. "Since you're going to see her, I'll be leaving."
"You're coming with me," Jaxon said.
Jaxon rolled down the car window and snapped his fingers at Caleb, who was standing under the large tree.
Sally looked at him in confusion. "If Ms. Harper isn't feeling well, you should go see her alone. Why drag me along?"
"You're a doctor. Who else would I bring? Why would I go alone?" Jaxon retorted.
She froze for a moment after hearing what he said.
It sounded reasonable, but something still felt off.
'Was it really appropriate for me to tag along when he went to see Kendall?' she thought.
Even though she was a doctor, she still felt there was something inappropriate about it.
However, she was also very curious about whether Kendall was really pregnant. She was desperate to find out.
So, she nodded and said, "Okay."
The car made its way to Kendall's place. Only tonight did Sally realize Kendall lived so close to Longbay, just half a mile away.
The two of them walked side by side to Kendall's place.
It was a sprawling luxury apartment, staffed by three housekeepers. Quite extravagant for a single occupant.
They were led to Kendall's room by the housekeeper.
Kendall's face lit up at the sound of familiar footsteps, springing up eagerly from her seat. But the moment she saw Sally, her expression darkened instantly.
"We're getting divorced. There won't be any dates. You're just imagining things." she replied.
