"Mrs. Zale, what brings you here all of a sudden?" Kendall's voice was filled with intense shock.
Before Sally could say a word, Jaxon, who was beside her, cut in first. "She was with me when you called. You said you weren't feeling well, right? So I specifically brought her along to check on you."
When Sally's gaze fell on Kendall's face, she caught a flicker of irritation in her eyes. It was gone in an instant, but she still noticed it.
"I'm feeling much better now. I just wanted you to come see me. I never thought you'd bring her along..."
The subtext was that she just wanted to see Jaxon alone. Naturally, Sally picked up on the hidden meaning in her words.
Jaxon sat down by the bedside and said coolly, "Since she's already here, let her examine you."
Under Jaxon's insistence, Kendall finally extended her hand.
Sally sat down beside her and reached out to take Kendall's pulse. Her gaze remained fixed on the bedsheets, her expression grave and focused.
No signs of pregnancy.
A wave of relief washed over her as she confirmed the news.
From her pulse reading, Sally can tell there's nothing seriously wrong with her. She might just be pretending to be sick to fool Jaxon.
'I'm already exhausted as it is, and now I have to play along with her little act,' Sally thought wearily, as a sudden surge of resentment flooded over her.
After a brief pause, Sally finally asked, "Ms. Harper, have you been taking large doses of herbal medicine lately?"
Jaxon frowned slightly. "Why are you taking herbal medicine?"
A look of obvious tension flashed across Kendall's face.
Seeing Kendall's continued silence, Sally spoke up again, her tone professional yet pointed. "Let me give you a friendly warning. Your digestive system is too fragile right now.
"This isn't the time to be taking all those tonic herbs, especially the fertility-boosting ones. They won't help you conceive any faster. In fact, they might backfire."
The moment Sally finished speaking, Kendall hastily waved her hand and exclaimed, "Mrs. Zale, that's completely unfounded!" Her voice was tinged with panic.
Sally Zale released Kendall's wrist and then got up from the chair.
Her tone was icy and detached. "I wasn't going to point this out, but prolonged use will indeed harm your health. I strongly advise you to stop taking these herbs immediately, Ms. Harper."
Jaxon frowned slightly. "Didn't you get divorced? Why are you still taking fertility herbs?"
Sally instinctively turned to look at Jaxon beside her.
'He's completely unaware of Kendall's scheme. So he's been kept in the dark by her all along.' she realized.
The rapid-fire questions left Kendall momentarily overwhelmed. For a moment, she was at a complete loss for how to respond to Jaxon.
Seeing that Kendall still wasn't answering, Jaxon guessed she probably didn't want to talk about it, so he changed the subject. He asked, "Then what's really causing her persistent vomiting?"
"That's something you'll have to ask Ms. Harper about." Sally gave the woman on the bed a knowing look, her voice dropping to a deliberate whisper.
Kendall met Sally's gaze and instantly understood her meaning. 'She can tell there's nothing wrong with me. She's just giving me a way out,' Kendall realized.
Kendall took the cue and said, "Maybe I ate something bad last night. Honestly, I'm feeling much better now."
Sally quickly rose from her chair. "Since Ms. Harper is fine, I'll be leaving."
Jaxon rose as soon as Sally stood up.
Kendall quickly reached out and grabbed Jaxon's arm. "Jaxon, can you stay with me tonight? I'm worried I might start throwing up again..."
Jaxon suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Sally also stopped in her tracks, turning back to look at the two behind her. Her gaze flickered between them before finally settling on their clasped hands.
Her eyelashes trembled slightly, betraying her hidden emotions.
Jaxon abruptly withdrew his hand and even stepped back. "I'm exhausted tonight, and I need to take Mrs. Zale home. I won't be able to stay with you. The housekeeper's here. If you feel unwell in the middle of the night, just let her know."
"Jaxon..." Kendall stared at him in disbelief.
The next moment, Jaxon's hand suddenly settled on Sally's back. "Come on, I'm taking you home."
Sally stiffened for a moment, glancing back in disbelief only to unexpectedly meet Kendall's visibly irritated gaze.
The unmistakable displeasure in Kendall's eyes was etched deeply into Sally's mind.
It wasn't until Jaxon had half-coaxed, half-led her out that Sally gradually came back to her senses.
Once inside the elevator, Sally finally broke the silence. "Jaxon, are you sure you're not going to stay with her?"
"I'm tired. Just want to go home and rest." Jaxon leaned against the elevator wall, his eyes darkening.
Staring into Jaxon's deep, dark eyes, Sally suddenly realized, 'Maybe his feelings for Kendall aren't that deep after all.'
Even after she begged him like that, Jaxon still refused to stay.
A faint, involuntary smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
Jaxon caught her smiling and glanced over. "What are you smiling about?"
The smile on Sally Zale's lips faded instantly.
Once composed, Jaxon took Sally's hand and led her straight out of the elevator.
Upon reaching the parking lot, Sally scanned the area but couldn't spot Caleb anywhere.
Jaxon seemed to read her mind and said, "Stop looking. I've already told my assistant to head home for the night."
Jaxon pulled open the car door and slid into the driver's seat, while Sally quietly took her place in the passenger side.
Abigail texted Sally Zale, and they chatted the whole way.
As the car slowly pulled into the garage at Longbay, Sally realized something was off. She turned to Jaxon, surprised, and asked, "Wait, weren't you supposed to take me home? Why did you bring me here instead?"
"It's late. You're staying here tonight," Jaxon said.
"Then how am I supposed to make it in time to take Lillian to school tomorrow? And Abigail's still having trouble walking. There's no way she can take her."
"I'll have Caleb handle that later." said Jaxon.
Left with no other choice, she reluctantly gave in.
Sally followed Jaxon up the stairs, trailing a few steps behind him. Just as she reached for the handle of the guest bedroom, his voice called out to her, "Come here."
Sally's hand paused on the doorknob. She glanced back and asked, "What is it?"
"You'll stay in my room."
"Then what about you?" Sally asked, genuinely puzzled. "If I take your room, where does that leave you? Surely you're not planning to crash on the couch?"
Jaxon strode over, wrapped an arm around her waist, and leaned in to whisper close to her ear, "Sweetheart, after what we've shared, you still want separate rooms? Aren't you being a little too distant with me?"
"Sweetheart."
Sally instinctively swallowed.
This was the first time Jaxon had ever called her that way, so tenderly that it made her go weak at the knees.
