His voice left no room for argument.
Sally had no choice but to reluctantly sit back down.
She hadn't seen him in a few days. Jaxon looked a bit thinner, but his features were as sharp and handsome as ever, making it difficult to look away.
Sally finally tore her gaze away, only to lock eyes with someone at the next table.
It was Brad, and his expression was a mixture of shock and irritation.
'He probably never expected to see her sitting with Jaxon,' she thought. 'Hell, I hadn't expected it either.'
Sally looked away, refusing to give him another glance.
The table was full of powerful business figures, all vying for Jaxon's attention, which meant she and Jaxon barely had a chance to speak.
Once the dinner service began, dishes were brought out one by one.
As Sally was eating, a short rib was placed on her plate. "Eat up," Jaxon said.
"Thanks, Jaxon," Sally replied with a polite smile.
The gesture didn't go unnoticed. A man across the table began to flatter him. "Jaxon, you truly are a class act! So kind even to your nephew's wife. The rumors are true, you really are a generous man... "
A faint smile touched Jaxon's lips, but he didn't reply.
Sally stepped in to smooth things over. "Yes, Jaxon is very good to our whole family."
"You know, I have a niece," the man continued, "brilliant, absolutely stunning. She'd be a perfect match for you, Jaxon. I'd love to introduce you two sometime... "
At his words, Sally's hand, holding her fork, froze for a split second.
'So that's his game,' she thought. 'He's trying to curry favor.'
Everyone there knew that a man like Jaxon was at the top of the food chain. Getting into his good graces could secure your future, as he held the entire business world's network in the palm of his hand.
Jaxon calmly picked up his napkin, a slight smile on his face. "I appreciate the offer, but I don't think we'll be joining families. I already have someone I'm interested in."
Sally's back went rigid.
For a moment, she couldn't help but wonder who he was talking about.
"You have a girlfriend, Jaxon?" The question was met with a ripple of surprise around the table.
"She's a tough one to win over," Jaxon said lightly, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "But I'm getting close."
Sally didn't dare turn to look at the man beside her.
'He must be talking about Kendall Harper,' she thought. The photo Abigail had shown her flashed in her mind. 'So things are really getting serious between them... '
A wave of irritation washed over her, refusing to subside.
The memories of her own intimate moments with him surfaced, and a heavy weight settled in her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Making an excuse about needing the restroom, she hastily left the table.
Sally took a few moments in the restroom to compose herself.
Deciding not to return to the table, she wandered over to the dessert bar instead.
Just as she picked up a small piece of cake and turned, someone bumped into her from behind.
The sudden movement caused her to drop the cake, and it landed squarely on the other person's dress.
The white frosting was a stark, messy smear against the black tulle of the skirt.
"Sally, don't you watch where you're going?" a sharp, piercing voice cut through the air.
Sally looked up and met Lena's furious gaze.
"Mom, look what you did to Auntie Lena's dress!" Nick, standing beside Lena, glared at her. "That dress was really expensive! Dad spent a lot of money to buy it for her!"
Sally took a step back, leaning against the dessert table. "What were you two doing, fooling around the dessert bar?" she asked, her voice cold. "She's the one who bumped into me. Why else would I have turned so suddenly?"
"You're just making excuses! Apologize to Auntie Lena right now!" Nick's voice was loud, drawing the attention of several nearby guests.
"You want me to apologize?" Sally let out a cold laugh. "Nick, is this what your father teaches you? To jump to conclusions without knowing the facts?"
"Mom, what are you talking about? This is your fault! Why are you trying to blame me and Dad?" Nick's brow furrowed, his expression growing more annoyed.
Before Sally could respond, another voice cut in. "Lena, what happened? How did your dress get dirty?"
Brad rushed over, his eyes fixed on Lena.
"Dad, you be the judge!" Nick said, positioning himself in front of Lena protectively. "Auntie Lena and I were just getting some dessert, and Mom dropped her cake all over her dress and won't even say she's sorry!"
Brad's gaze shifted to Sally, his brow tightening. "Did you do this?"
Sally straightened her back, her tone icy. "They were messing around and bumped into me. That's why I dropped the cake. So go on, Mr. Zale, be the judge. Tell me whose fault it is... "
Brad met her sharp, cold stare and was momentarily at a loss for words.
If that was true, then Lena was also at fault.
"Mrs. Zale, I'm sure I didn't bump into you," Lena interjected, her voice full of false sincerity. "And this dress is very expensive. It was a birthday gift from Brad, and this is the first time I've worn it. I won't ask you to have it cleaned, let's just both apologize and... "
"You bumped into me, and you want me to apologize?" Sally cut her off. "I haven't even asked for an apology from you for ruining my dessert."
"Sally! That's enough! Don't take it too far," Brad snapped, his voice rising.
Sally's eyes darkened. "What? So you're telling me to apologize, Mr. Zale?"
"Yes!" Brad said without hesitation. "Apologize to Lena. Now."
A chill spread through Sally's heart and refused to dissipate.
'This ungrateful father and son duo,' she thought bitterly. 'Like father, like son.'
Sally stared him down. "And what if I don't? What are you going to do about it, Mr. Zale?"
Brad was fuming at her defiance.
In the past, Sally would have immediately done as he said and apologized.
But ever since she got out of prison, she fought him on everything. She never considered his feelings anymore.
'She used to love me so much... Why did she change like this?' Brad thought bitterly.
"Mom! Just apologize already!" Nick urged from the side.
Just as he spoke, a deep voice cut in from behind them. "Shouldn't you be the ones apologizing?"
