"Mm." Jaxon leaned back against the seat and said no more.
Sally, seeing the lingering haze of alcohol in his eyes, grabbed the hair dryer and started drying his hair for him.
A flicker of emotion, something soft and appreciative, crossed the man's face.
Just as she was finishing, he stood up and planted a soft kiss on her forehead.
Then, without a word, he swept her into his arms and carried her to the bed.
Just like last time, he did nothing more than hold her close.
He must have been exhausted, because he fell asleep almost instantly.
Sally, however, tossed and turned, sleep eluding her.
Watching his sleeping face, the urge to finalize her divorce reached a fever pitch.
'I can't drag this out any longer,' she thought. 'It's putting both of us in a dangerous position. Even if I can't be with Jaxon, I have to get that divorce.'
The next day, Sally was startled awake by her phone.
Glancing at the screen, she saw it was her old friend, Finn Caldwell.
He was in Westmere for business and would be staying for about ten days. He called to ask if he could crash at Windmere Estates.
"Of course," Sally said, her voice warm and relaxed. "My house is your house! Come whenever you want."
She meant every word.
When her grandfather was still alive, Finn had practically lived with them.
Although they weren't related by blood, in Sally's heart, they were family. He was the brother she never had.
"My flight lands around three this afternoon, so I probably won't get to your place until eight tonight," he told her.
"Okay, I'll come pick you up," she replied, a smile in her voice. "Just call me before you get in."
"Sounds good," Finn agreed, following her to the car.
When Sally hung up, she turned her head and met a pair of icy-cold eyes.
Her hand tightened around her phone.
Jaxon's voice was low, laced with danger. "What was that about? 'My house is your house'? Explain."
"He's practically family. He watched me grow up, and he's like a brother to me," Sally explained. "Is there a problem with that?"
"You might see him as a brother," Jaxon countered, "but that doesn't mean he sees you as a sister."
Before she could respond, he threw back the covers and stalked toward the bathroom.
Sally watched him go, puzzled by his words, but didn't dwell on it.
She got up, showered in the guest room, and came out to find the master bedroom door still closed.
'He drank a lot last night,' she figured. 'He's probably sleeping it off.'
Deciding not to disturb him, Sally went downstairs.
As she reached the living room, she heard the click of heels on the floor.
Looking up, she saw Kendall walking in.
Kendall stopped short, her eyes wide with shock when she saw Sally.
"Sally? What are you doing here?" she demanded, her voice thick with disbelief.
Sally, caught off guard, was about to explain when Kendall's voice sharpened. "You spent the night here? Did you sleep with Jaxon?"
Kendall's eyes scanned Sally from head to toe, as if searching for some tell-tale sign of a night of passion.
Disappointingly for her, there was nothing to see.
Sally understood her intent immediately.
Since nothing had happened between her and Jaxon, there were no marks to find.
"I always knew there was something shady going on between you two," Kendall seethed. "Now I've caught you red-handed! What do you have to say for yourself?"
Looking at Kendall's furious expression, Sally suddenly decided to use this opportunity to test the waters.
She'd been wanting to know if Kendall and Jaxon were actually together.
This was the perfect chance.
"Miss Harper," Sally began coolly, "you're not his girlfriend, and you're not his wife. Why are you so concerned?"
"So you're admitting it? That there really is something between you and Jaxon?" Kendall's voice rose an octave.
"You won't answer my question, so why should I answer yours?" Sally retorted with a cold smirk.
"You're not even divorced from Brad yet, and you're already going after Jaxon," Kendall threatened, her voice shaking with rage. "You think I won't tell everyone?"
The smirk on Sally's lips turned icy. "Go ahead. And what do you think Jaxon will do to you when he finds out? He can't stand people who talk behind his back. You've known him for years, Miss Harper. Surely you know that much about him?"
The threat landed. Kendall's hands clenched into fists, her face tight with anger.
She knew Sally was right.
Jaxon wasn't a man to be crossed. If she truly angered him, there would be hell to pay.
"I heard you adopted my best friend's daughter, is that right?" Kendall asked.
Unable to win that argument, Kendall changed her line of attack, her gaze fixed on Sally's face.
'That must be why they got close in the first place,' Kendall thought. 'Because of that child. If the child is gone, they'll have no reason to see each other.'
Sally's face hardened. "What are you trying to do?"
"A person with your loose morals isn't fit to raise her daughter," Kendall declared. "I don't feel right leaving Lillian with you. I'm going to get her back!"
Her words dropped into the room, and Sally's brow furrowed.
Jaxon had warned her when she first took Lillian in that Kendall might try to fight for custody one day. She had assumed that after all this time, Kendall had given up the idea. She was wrong.
Sienna and Kendall might have been friends, but Sienna had entrusted her daughter to Sally before she died. There was no way she was letting Kendall take her.
"Lillian is happy and well-cared for with me," Sally stated, her voice cold and firm, her eyes like ice. "I'm not going to let you take her away."
"We'll see about that!" Kendall spat, her chest heaving with anger.
'I'll take the child, and the man will be mine, too!'
Kendall spun on her heel and stormed out the door.
Sally's legs suddenly felt weak, and she sank onto the sofa, trying to compose herself.
'No matter what, I can't let her take Lillian.'
Just then, a voice came from the top of the stairs. "Did someone just come by?"
