Sally turned at the sound of his voice.
Jaxon had come downstairs without her noticing. His eyes held a flicker of curiosity.
"What's wrong?" he pressed, seeing the look on her face. "You look pale."
Sally swallowed hard and shook her head. "It's nothing."
"Pale like that and you say it's nothing?" Jaxon stepped closer, sitting beside her and reaching out to feel her forehead. "Are you feeling sick?"
'I won't tell him Kendall was here,' she thought. 'It would just cause unnecessary trouble.'
"I probably just didn't sleep well last night." Sally, not wanting to get into it, leaned away from his touch.
Jaxon's hand met empty air. A flash of annoyance crossed his face. "Sally, are you avoiding me?"
After a moment of silence, she met his gaze and said softly, "It's getting late. I need to get to the clinic."
As she stood up, Jaxon asked bluntly, "What time is that Caldwell guy getting in?"
"Around eight tonight," she replied, her voice quiet.
A chill crept into Jaxon's eyes, but he didn't say anything else, just watched her leave.
After a busy evening at the clinic, Sally took Lillian with her to the airport.
When Finn came through the arrivals gate, his eyes landed on the little girl. "This must be Lillian."
"Hi, Mr. Caldwell. I'm Lillian Simone, Sally's adopted daughter... " Lillian said, her voice shy but clear.
"I brought you something," Finn said, pulling a doll from his bag and handing it to her. "I hope you like it."
Lillian Simone's breath caught when her eyes landed on the plush doll.
Lillian's eyes went wide. It was the exact doll she wanted most!
'Sally must have told him,' she thought happily.
"Thank you, Mr. Caldwell! I love it!" she chirped, hugging the doll tightly.
Sally smiled at Finn. "You must be hungry. Abigail's already making dinner at home. Let's go."
"Sounds good," Finn agreed, following her to the car.
As usual, whenever Finn was around, he took the wheel.
As he settled into the seat, he glanced around the car's interior. "Wow. When did you get such a nice ride?"
Sally hesitated for a second before telling the truth. "Jaxon bought it, actually."
"Jaxon Zale gave it to you?" Finn's voice was sharp with surprise, his knuckles whitening on the steering wheel. "Why would he suddenly buy you a car?"
Sally could tell what he was thinking and quickly clarified, "It was to make it easier to get Lillian to and from school. Jaxon's her godfather. So, if you think about it, the car is really for her."
"This Mr. Zale... he's quite the guy, isn't he... " The remark was dripping with insinuation.
Sally heard it, but Lillian didn't.
"My godfather is the best!" Lillian piped up proudly from the back seat. "He always brings me treats and fun toys!"
"Is that so?" Finn's voice was tight.
"Yes!" Lillian confirmed, oblivious.
Finn's gaze fixed on the road ahead, his expression darkening.
He knew about Lillian's past, but Sally had never mentioned that Jaxon was her godfather.
'There's definitely more going on between them than she's letting on,' he thought. He'd sensed it back in Freymoor.
When they got back to the apartment, Abigail had a hot meal waiting for them.
Finn and Abigail were old friends, so the three of them fell into easy conversation over dinner.
After dinner, Abigail took Lillian off for her bath, and Sally led Finn out onto the balcony for some fresh air.
They settled into the lounge chairs, and the conversation turned to the incident in Freymoor.
"The police still haven't given us any updates on that," Finn said, his voice low as he stared out into the night. "They said the person who did it was a pro, incredibly good at covering their tracks. They left nothing behind. The cops told us to be prepared for the possibility that we'll never find them... "
He let his voice trail off.
The news wasn't a surprise to Sally.
She'd suspected as much since leaving Freymoor, accepting that she might never find out who was behind it all.
To this day, she had no idea who wanted her dead.
"But the one thing they're sure of," Finn continued, "is that whoever it was came from Westmere. You didn't know anyone in Freymoor, let alone have any enemies there. It had to be someone from here."
"Yeah, I know," she murmured, nodding thoughtfully.
Finn looked at Sally and said seriously, "Which means you're still in danger. You have to be on your guard."
"Right." Sally felt the mood grow heavy and decided to change the subject. "So, what brings you to Westmere this time?"
"An old friend's father is sick," he explained. "It's pretty serious, and they need to incorporate some traditional medicine into his treatment. He asked me to come personally. When a friend asks, you can't really say no, you know?"
"That makes sense," Sally nodded.
Finn asked, "And you? How have you been? Is the divorce going smoothly?"
At the mention of the divorce, Jaxon's face inexplicably popped into Sally's mind.
"Doesn't sound like it," Finn observed when she didn't answer.
Sally shook her head, clearing the thought. "His grandfather-Brad's father-is completely against it. And his health has been poor lately. I want to wait until he's more stable before I bring it up again."
Finn let out a sigh. "They say marrying into a family like the Zales is more trouble than it's worth. I guess they're right. Getting in is hard, but getting out is even harder... "
