A faint, bitter smile touched Sally's lips. His words hit her right where it hurt.
"Sally." Finn, the man beside her, called her name softly again.
She turned to him instinctively. "What is it?"
"If you can," Finn began, "try to find someone simple to marry next time. A man with a simple family, a simple background, a simple career... "
Sally swallowed hard.
'Too bad the men I fall for are anything but simple.'
She couldn't even be sure if what she felt for Jaxon was love, but she knew she wasn't pushing him away.
The men in her life were complicated, and worse, they were from the same family.
Finn would be so disappointed if he knew.
As Sally was about to speak, Finn reached out and gently patted her head. "You're the only sister I've got in this," he said. "I don't want to see you get your heart broken again."
Sister.
The word hung in the air, and her eyes fluttered.
It had been so long since he'd called her that, and the memories it stirred made her heart sink.
"Okay," Sally said, quickly standing up. "It's getting late. You should get some rest. Your room is right next to mine. I'll show you the way."
"Alright." Finn watched his hand fall back to his side, empty.
For the next couple of days, Sally spent her days at the clinic and her nights in the attic, meticulously restoring the Madonna Locket for Jaxon.
Jaxon himself seemed busy and stayed away, but his assistant, Caleb, was a constant presence, calling daily to check on the locket's progress.
The restoration was nearly finished.
Another two days, and it would be done.
The locket, she believed, held the key to understanding the real nature of Jaxon's relationship with Kendall, which was why she was working so feverishly.
Finn, who was treating his friend's father, was a frequent visitor at Sally's clinic, picking up medicine and occasionally seeing a few patients for her when she was swamped.
As evening approached, Brad Zale happened to be driving past Sally's clinic. The sight of her and Finn walking side-by-side into the restaurant next door made his expression darken instantly.
After dinner, Finn borrowed her car to make a house call to his patient.
"Sally!"
A voice called out just as she was about to step back into the clinic.
Sally turned to see a familiar figure leaning against a car.
After a moment's hesitation, she walked over. "What is it?"
"Who was that man just now?" Brad's eyes were cold as he gestured in the direction the Porsche had gone.
Sally knew he meant Finn.
Before she had married into the Zale family, Finn had already moved to Freymoor. He'd been so against the marriage that he hadn't even come to her wedding, which was why the two men had never met.
When she didn't answer, Brad grabbed her arm.
"I'm talking to you!" his voice rose. "Who the hell is he? What is he to you?"
"What I do and who I see is none of your business, is it?" Sally shot back, her voice low and steady as she met his gaze.
"It was him at the mansion, wasn't it?" Brad's brow furrowed, his eyes boring into hers.
Sally knew exactly who he was talking about. He still had no idea it was Jaxon.
"If it weren't for your grandfather, we'd be divorced already," she said, a chill in her voice. "We both have new lives. I don't ask about yours, so please stay out of mine."
He ignored her. "So it was him," he muttered, his grip tightening on her arm.
Sally winced, a sharp pain shooting up from his fingers. "Let go! You're hurting me!"
But Brad didn't let go. Instead, he started pulling her toward his car.
Just then, an icy voice cut through the air. "Brad, she told you to let go. Are you deaf?"
Hearing that voice, Sally froze.
She looked up and saw Jaxon's stern face.
He had appeared out of nowhere and was now yanking Brad's hand off her arm.
Sally's arm was finally free, a deep red mark already forming where he'd held her.
"Jaxon? What are you doing here?" Brad asked, a look of pure shock on his face.
"Just passing by," Jaxon said, giving him a cool glance. "I have something to discuss with Mrs. Zale. If you're done, you can leave."
Brad looked like he wanted to argue, but one look at his uncle's cold expression and he backed down.
"Fine," he conceded, turning and getting into his car.
As the car disappeared down the street, Jaxon turned his gaze to Sally. "What was that all about? Why was he so worked up?"
"He saw me having dinner with Finn," she said, her eyes downcast. "He suspects that we're... "
The rest of the words caught in her throat.
Jaxon stepped closer, his eyes locked on hers. "What? That you're sleeping with him, too?"
Sally flinched. "What do you mean, too?"
"What exactly did you do with him to give my dear nephew that idea?" Jaxon's hand suddenly found her waist, pulling her flush against him.
Sally's heart leaped into her throat, hammering against her ribs.
"Jaxon, we're right in front of the clinic. Anyone could see us. Don't do this... " She instinctively pressed her hands against his chest, trying to push him away.
Instead, Jaxon grabbed her wrist and pulled her into a dark alley nearby.
"Sally." Finn, the man beside her, called her name softly again.
