The clinic was separated from the restaurant next door by a narrow alley, a tight squeeze barely wide enough for one person. It was a shortcut few people ever used.
Jaxon dragged her into it, slamming her back against the brick wall.
He pinned her by the shoulder with one hand and used the other to grab her chin, forcing her face up.
The proximity was intoxicatingly intimate, and Sally's heart hammered against her ribs.
"Answer the question," Jaxon pressed, his voice low and demanding.
Sally swallowed hard. "We just had dinner. That's it."
"Is it? Because I also heard the two of you have been having nightly chats out on the balcony."
Jaxon's words hit her, and her eyes widened in shock.
After a moment, Sally found her voice. "Jaxon, are you having me followed?"
"If I didn't," he said, his tone chilling, "how else would I find out about your little romantic rendezvous?"
Sally was at a loss for words.
It was true. For the past few nights, she and Finn had talked about crystalware on the balcony after dinner—it was more like she was asking for his professional advice.
The setting, the cool autumn breeze, the night sky... she could see how, with a lover, it might be considered romantic.
"It's not what you think," she stammered. "Finn and I are just friends. We were talking business... "
"Were you?" Jaxon's eyes narrowed in disbelief. "What kind of business?"
Before Sally could figure out how to answer, the shrill ring of her phone cut through the tension.
She broke free from his grip and pulled it out.
Finn's name glowed on the screen.
Jaxon saw it, too.
In one swift motion, he snatched the phone and ended the call.
"Jaxon, what are you doing? What if it was important?"
Sally's protest was cut short as his mouth crashed down on hers.
Panic seized her. Her eyes flew open.
Jaxon was kissing her deeply, possessively, right out in the open.
While the alley was secluded, anyone walking past the entrance could easily glance in and see them.
She couldn't shake the fear that Brad had people watching her, and if they were seen, the consequences would be catastrophic.
Their secret would be out.
For Sally, the kiss was pure, agonizing torture.
Sensing her distraction, Jaxon pulled back, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes.
"Your head's somewhere else. Where?"
She instinctively tried to push away, to create some distance.
"Jaxon, we're outside," she whispered, her voice trembling as she looked up at him. "How could you do that?"
"What's wrong with being outside? If you wanted to, I'd do it right in front of Brad..."
Before he could finish, she clapped a hand over his mouth.
Jaxon just watched her, a slow, knowing smile spreading across his face.
His intense, smoldering eyes seemed to glow in the dim light, and for a split second, her heart skipped a beat.
'This is insane,' she thought, the feeling almost indescribable.
"Don't ever say things like that again," Sally said, her voice firm. "I'm still married to him. This... us... it's already complicated enough. We can't do anything more reckless. I wouldn't forgive you."
Jaxon's gaze remained fixed on hers.
He pulled her hand away from his lips.
"So that's your line, is it?" he murmured, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Sally shot him a glare and turned to leave, but he grabbed her wrist again.
He leaned in close, his lips brushing against her ear.
"You may be living under the same roof, but you will keep your distance from him," he whispered, his tone a soft, dangerous command. "Don't make me angry. Understand?"
"Yes," Sally breathed out, an almost reflexive response.
Satisfied, Jaxon finally let her go. They left the alley, one after the other.
Sally walked into the clinic, and when she glanced back, Jaxon's car was already gone.
Shaking off the chaotic swirl of her emotions, Sally gathered her things to head home.
When she saw Finn, she remembered the aborted phone call.
"Finn, sorry about that. I was in the middle of something when you called," she offered, a small white lie. "Was it important?"
"No, not really. The drive is a bit far, so I was just calling to say I couldn't pick you up." Finn said.
Sally nodded. "You don't have to worry about that. I can get a ride home."
"Isn't Lillian starting school soon?" Finn asked, changing the subject.
"Yeah, in five days."
Finn said, "I'll go with you to drop her off on the first day."
"Okay," Sally agreed without hesitation.
The next day, Sally dropped Lillian off at daycare before heading to the clinic.
It was a busy afternoon, and she'd just finished with a patient when her phone rang. It was the daycare.
Sally answered immediately. "Ms. Evans, is everything okay?"
"Mrs. Zale, a woman just burst into the center and grabbed Lillian!" the teacher's frantic voice poured through the speaker. "She dragged her into a car before we could stop her. We couldn't catch up. I'm so sorry, I had to call you right away... "
The words hit Sally like a punch to the gut.
Her blood ran cold.
A powerful sense of dread washed over her, and she could already picture the scene in her mind.
She knew, instantly, who had taken her.
Kendall.
Sally had thought it was just an empty threat, but she'd actually done it.
