"Mrs. Zale, are you still there?" the teacher asked again, her voice pulling Sally back from the brink of her spiraling thoughts.
"Was it a woman with wavy blonde hair?" Sally asked, her voice strained. "Tall, maybe five-foot-eight? Beautiful, very poised... "
"Yes, that's her exactly," the teacher confirmed. "A perfect match."
The confirmation hit Sally like a physical blow.
It was Kendall. It had to be.
"Okay, I understand," Sally said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'll handle it from here. I'll let you know when I have her back. Thank you."
"Alright."
After hanging up, a wave of anxiety washed over her.
Going to Kendall's house alone would be pointless; she'd just make excuses and refuse to hand Lillian over. And calling the police right now felt wrong. It wasn't a stranger abduction, and it would only complicate things.
She paced anxiously around the clinic, phone clutched in her hand.
Carlos seeing the look on her face, approached her cautiously. "Sally, what's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I... " Sally rushed over to the counter, her mind racing. "I don't know what to do. You have to help me think."
"Of course. Take a breath and tell me what happened."
Sally quickly explained the situation, her words tumbling out in a rush.
Carlos listened intently and didn't hesitate with his advice. "You have to call Mr. Zale."
Sally froze. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind.
"Think about it," Carlos pressed. "This is personal. Kendall obviously has a problem with you, and she won't listen to a word you say. But Mr. Zale is Lillian's godfather. If he shows up, she can't just brush him off. He'll get Lillian back, no question."
Sally processed his words.
Carlos was right. It was a solid plan.
"Okay," Sally said, her resolve hardening. "I'll call him right now."
She stepped toward the clinic's entrance as she dialed Jaxon's number.
At that moment, inside the Zale Group's main boardroom, Jaxon was leading a meeting with his top executives.
When his phone vibrated on the polished table, he glanced down. Seeing Sally's name on the screen, a slight frown creased his brow.
He stood up abruptly. "Continue without me for a moment."
The executives exchanged confused glances.
Jaxon never took personal calls during a board meeting. Ever.
Stepping out into the hallway, he answered. "Sally? Is everything okay?"
"Jaxon, the daycare just called," she said, her voice tight with panic. "Kendall went there and forcibly took Lillian."
Her words made Jaxon's jaw tighten.
After a beat, he asked, "Why would she do something like that?"
"I can't explain everything over the phone. I think she took her to her house. Can you please come get me? I need you to go with me to get her back... "
Sally voice was trembling.
Jaxon had never heard her sound so utterly desperate. His grip on the phone tightened.
"Stay at the clinic," he said, his own voice low and firm. "I'm on my way."
"Okay."
Jaxon hung up just as the boardroom door opened.
Caleb, his assistant, stepped out. "Mr. Zale, we're ready for your closing remarks. Are you... "
"Not now," Jaxon cut him off. "Something urgent has come up. Postpone the rest of the meeting. I'll reschedule. Have the car brought around. Now."
"Yes, Mr. Zale," Caleb replied, quickly hiding his surprise.
As Jaxon strode toward the elevator, Caleb stared after him, a knowing look in his eyes.
'It must have been Sally,' Caleb thought. Only she could make Jaxon drop everything in the middle of a board meeting.
Half an hour later, Sally was in the backseat of Jaxon's car, speeding toward Kendall's home.
As the driver raised the privacy partition, Jaxon turned to her. "Alright, tell me what this is really about. Why would she take a child from daycare?"
Sally hesitated for a long moment before asking quietly, "Mr. Zale, what exactly is your relationship with Ms. Harper?"
"What does that have to do with this?" he asked, looking genuinely confused.
Sally bit her lip, then the words spilled out. "She accused me of having... inappropriate relationships. That I was playing you and Brad. She said I was a bad influence and that she couldn't let Lillian stay with someone like me."
Jaxon's expression darkened, his face turning to stone.
"That's ridiculous," he growled, a dangerous edge to his voice.
Sally watched his cold, sharp profile.
Jaxon was usually cool and composed, but this was different. This was pure anger. Kendall had clearly struck a nerve.
Sally remained silent, her own features hardening.
After a few tense moments, he spoke again, his voice slightly softer. "Don't pay any attention to what Kendall says. Her bark is worse than her bite. Deep down, she's not a bad person."
Sally's hands, resting in her lap, clenched into fists.
"You seem to know her very well, Mr. Zale," she said, her tone sharp.
Jaxon turned to meet her gaze. "We've known each other our whole lives. Of course I know her."
'Of course.'
It made perfect sense.
They were childhood friends, after all. It would be stranger if he didn't know her well.
Yet a bitter feeling coiled in Sally's stomach and refused to fade.
She looked him straight in the eye, her voice low and probing. "Is that all it is?"
"What else would it be, Mrs. Zale?" he countered, his voice coolly formal.
'Are you two dating?'
The question screamed in Sally's mind, but the words wouldn't come out.
In the end, she just shook her head and said nothing.
Jaxon turned his gaze back to the window, and the car filled with a heavy, unspoken tension.
Sally had a sinking feeling that the day's troubles were just getting started.
