Before they even reached Kendall Harper's front door, they could hear Lillian's cries from inside.
"Let me out! I want Sally! I want to go back to Sally!"
"Why are you so obsessed with her? Wouldn't you rather live with me? I was your mother's best friend. We grew up together. My bond with your mom was much deeper than hers with Sally. If anyone should adopt you, it's me!"
Lillian just kept crying, her voice raw. "I want Sally!"
Kendall's voice softened into a coaxing tone. "I'll buy you anything you want. Just stay with me, okay?"
"No! I don't want to... Waaah... "
The child's sobs grew more intense, and a knot of anxiety tightened in Sally's chest.
She shot a worried look at the man beside her.
Jaxon's expression was thunderous. He lifted a hand and banged his fist on the door.
"Kendall, open up!" he boomed, his voice thick with fury.
There was a sudden scuffle inside, and Sally suspected Kendall was having the maid hide the girl. Lillian's cries abruptly stopped.
The door was opened by a maid.
The moment the door cracked open, Sally pushed past her and stormed inside.
Kendall was sitting on the living room sofa, one long leg crossed over the other.
Seeing Sally, she asked in a nonchalant tone, "Sally, what brings you here?"
"Why did you just take her like that? Where is she?" Sally demanded, her eyes scanning the room. But there was no sign of the child, not even a sound.
"'Just take her?' I thought I made my intentions perfectly clear the other day. This was hardly out of the blue."
Just as Kendall finished speaking, a tall figure strode through the doorway.
The moment Kendall saw Jaxon, her composure faltered, and her eyes widened slightly.
Lillian's hysterics had been so loud that she'd only half-recognized his voice at the door. She hadn't actually believed he would come.
"Jaxon, what are you doing here?" Kendall asked, her voice dropping as a wave of unease washed over her.
"Where is the child?" Jaxon's gaze was cold, and the air around him felt even heavier than usual.
"Jaxon, I'm doing this for her own good," Kendall said, her voice firm. "Surely you won't stand in my way... "
"You know I don't like to repeat myself," Jaxon cut her off, his voice rising sharply.
The sudden intensity of his tone startled not only Kendall but Sally as well.
Sally glanced at him, seeing the raw, unbridled anger in his eyes. He was genuinely furious.
Kendall took a deep breath, finally defeated. She looked at the maid. "Go get her."
"Yes, Ms. Harper." The maid replied.
The maid hurried toward Kendall's bedroom. The moment the door opened, the sound of heartbreaking sobs filled the air again.
Sally turned just in time to see Lillian run out of the room.
When Lillian saw Sally, her cries intensified. She ran straight into Sally's arms. "Sally, you finally came! I don't want to stay here. Please take me home. I want to go back to Windmere Estates!"
Seeing her tear-streaked face, Sally's heart ached with both sorrow and a profound sense of joy.
She was slowly winning the little girl's trust. Lillian truly saw her as family now, and Windmere Estates as her home.
"Lillian, it's okay, don't be scared," Sally whispered, hugging her tightly. "Windmere Estates is your home. You're going to stay with me."
"But Kendall said she's going to fight for custody, and that I can't go back with you," Lillian sobbed, her small body trembling uncontrollably.
Seeing the child's escalating distress, Jaxon stepped in. "Sally, take Lillian and go," he said firmly.
"Okay."
Sally met his steady gaze, nodded, and quickly guided Lillian toward the door.
Kendall shouted, "Sally, you can't take her! I—"
Kendall's protest died in her throat as a tall figure blocked her path.
She looked up into Jaxon's frigid stare.
He said nothing, but a single look from him was enough to freeze her in place.
Without looking back, Sally hurried out with the child, pulling the door closed behind them as they headed for the elevator.
The apartment fell silent.
The maid, sensing the tension, quietly slipped out of the living room, leaving the two of them alone.
Kendall looked up at the man before her, her eyes filled with disbelief. "Jaxon, do you have any idea what you're doing?"
Jaxon walked calmly to the sofa and sat down, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it with a flick of his wrist.
When he didn't answer, Kendall moved to sit beside him.
"That's Sienna's only child," she said, her voice strained with confusion. "How can you just leave her with a woman like that? Are you really okay with this?"
Jaxon took a long drag from his cigarette, exhaling a slow stream of smoke.
"A woman like what?" he asked casually, his voice dangerously low.
"An ex-con! She has no morals, no integrity. Someone like that can't raise Lillian properly! I absolutely will not let her stay with that woman!" Kendall's own resolve hardened as she stared him down.
"If having a criminal record makes you immoral and corrupt, then what about your best friend, Sienna?" Jaxon countered, his fingers tightening around his cigarette. "She was in prison, too. Does that mean you think she was corrupt and had no morals?"
"Sienna was just unlucky. She fell in with the wrong people. That's why she ended up where she did. Sally is different... " Kendall argued.
"How is she different?" he interjected before she could finish. "What makes you so sure she wasn't just dealt a bad hand, too?"
Kendall stared at him, utterly speechless.
"Let me out! I want Sally! I want to go back to Sally!"
