Kendall stood close to Jaxon, smiling warmly as she spoke to him.
He listened patiently, nodding occasionally.
They looked like a perfect couple.
Sally had felt the same way the first time she saw them together.
Finn, noticing she'd stopped, followed her gaze.
The moment he saw Jaxon, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
Finn quickly looked away, turning back to Sally. "Are we going in?" he asked softly.
At the sound, Sally quickly averted her gaze, meeting Finn's questioning eyes.
Without waiting for an answer, he stepped forward, took her by the arm, and guided her inside.
Jaxon and Kendall's table was on the first floor, near the window.
Just as Jaxon sat down and looked up to call a waiter, he spotted them.
Finn was leading Sally by the hand toward the stairs to the second floor.
The sight of their linked hands, so intimate, made his own grip tighten on the menu.
"Sorry I'm late," Kendall's boss said, bustling over to the table and blocking Jaxon's view.
Jaxon forced himself to look away from the staircase and greet the man.
He was only here for a business meeting with Kendall's company; he never imagined he'd run into them just by grabbing lunch.
Upstairs, Sally picked at her food, her mind a million miles away.
All she could see was Jaxon and Kendall walking into the restaurant, shoulder to shoulder.
'They must be on a date,' she thought. There was no other explanation.
"Who was that woman with Jaxon?" Finn asked, placing some food on her plate.
Sally looked up, caught in his questioning gaze, unsure how to respond.
Finn seemed to read her mind and cut to the chase. "Is she his girlfriend?"
Sally's hand froze for a second. After a long pause, she murmured, "Maybe."
"What do you mean, 'maybe'?" Finn pressed, his brow furrowing with a hint of irritation. "It's a yes or no question."
Sally's eyelashes fluttered wildly as she scrambled for the right response.
When she remained silent, his tone softened. "Sally, you're smart. You know what lines shouldn't be crossed. Don't do something you'll regret."
He leaned in slightly. "Relationships are fragile, especially the dangerous ones. If you play with fire, you're going to get burned. It could destroy you."
Sally knew he was right.
He was telling her to know when to stop.
Sally wasn't sure how much Finn had figured out, but he was way too sharp—there was no hiding anything from him. Even if she tried to deny it now, it'd be futile.
"The men of the Zale family all have rather cold dispositions. Honestly, from the very first moment I saw a photo of Brad, I knew life with him wouldn't be easy for you. But back then, you were so determined to follow your heart—how could I have said something so out of line?" Finn said.
Because Finn wasn't just a master of medicine and jade artifacts—he'd devoured countless psychology books and was even a certified psychologist. He truly had a deep understanding of human nature.
Finn always said Brad was emotionally detached—and maybe he was right. Otherwise, their marriage wouldn't have ended up in such a mess.
Though Finn never once mentioned "Jaxon Zale" by name, his talk of "the Zale men" clearly encompassed him.
"Are you listening to me?" Finn's voice pulled her back.
Sally nodded numbly. "Yes."
A moment later, she excused herself to the restroom, needing to get some air.
She was splashing cold water on her face when a low, familiar voice came from behind her.
"If you keep scrubbing like that, you're going to rub your skin raw."
Her head snapped up, her eyes meeting the reflection in the mirror.
Jaxon was leaning against the wall behind her, arms crossed, watching her with a cool expression.
Sally was just thinking about Jaxon, and suddenly—there he was, right behind her.
She quickly turned off the faucet and tried to walk past him, but he shot out a hand and grabbed her arm.
"Mr. Zale, let go of me," she said, her voice dripping with ice.
She tried to pull her arm free, but his grip only tightened.
Jaxon turned to face her, his tone sharp. "Why didn't you give me a chance to explain back at the clinic?"
"Explain? What is there to explain? We're not together. We're nothing to each other."
He suddenly pulled her, dragging her into one of the empty stalls and slamming the door shut with a loud bang that echoed in the small space.
Jaxon pinned her against the door, holding her wrists flat against the wood.
His intense gaze bore down on her. "What you saw that day was a misunderstanding," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Between her and me, nothing—"
"I saw it with my own eyes, and you're calling it a misunderstanding?" Sally cut him off, her voice shaking with anger. "If Kendall had walked in on us, would you have told her it was just a 'misunderstanding,' too?"
Jaxon was speechless for a moment. He knew it was useless, but he had to try. "Believe me or not, nothing happened between us. You're the only one for me."
Hearing those words from him once would have sent her over the moon.
Now, they just felt like a knife twisting in her gut, the pain making it hard to breathe.
Sally gritted her teeth. "I am not your woman!"
She struggled with all her might, but he suddenly cupped her face in his hands and crushed his lips to hers.
The unexpected kiss sent a jolt through her, and for a moment, she froze.
He kissed her deeply, more passionately than ever before.
But then, fury surged through her. Sally parted her lips and bit down on his, hard.
