The sharp pain made him release her instantly.
Jaxon instinctively touched his lip. When he pulled his hand away, his fingertip was stained bright red.
His brow furrowed for a moment, then his gaze fixed on her, intense.
Instead of anger, he reached out and gently stroked her hair. "If that helps you feel better," he said softly, "I don't mind."
She looked up, shocked and incredulous.
'Is he crazy?' Sally thought.
She'd just bitten him, and instead of getting mad, he was comforting her.
Sally reflexively slapped his hand away. She glared at him. "You're insane!"
Then she spun around, yanked the door open, and stormed out.
Jaxon followed her out, watching from the hallway as she walked away, his expression darkening.
His lip throbbed with pain.
He stood in front of the sink, staring at his reflection. The bright red on his lip was stark.
Even though it hurt, the corner of his mouth curved into a faint smile.
'Oh, well,' he thought. 'She's the one who did it. It's fine.'
After dinner, Sally went back to work at the clinic.
She tried to push what happened earlier out of her mind, but whenever she paused, the scene in the restroom replayed in her head.
No matter what, she didn't regret biting him.
That evening, at Windmere Estates, Lillian came home complaining that the school food wasn't very good and that she missed Sally's cooking.
"How about I get up early tomorrow and make you lunch to take to school?" Sally offered.
"Really? But... " Lillian looked up at her, her voice soft. "Won't that be too much work for you, Sally? You see so many patients every day."
"It's okay. I'll just make sure to go to bed earlier." It was worth a little extra effort to make sure the child ate well.
After she finished restoring the crystal cross, Sally hadn't taken on any new commissions for a few days.
Partly because she wasn't in the right headspace, and partly because she needed to go to bed early to make Lillian's lunch.
For the next few days, she got up early to pack a lunch for Lillian.
Jaxon didn't show up again, and the peace and quiet was a relief.
There was no word from Brad, either. Life was finally starting to feel calm.
On Friday, the school was holding parent-teacher conferences. The teacher had asked her to come around noon to have lunch with Lillian and see her in the school environment before the meetings started at two.
This was her first parent-teacher conference for Lillian, so she took it very seriously.
Sally drove to the school well before noon.
It was lunchtime, and hearing the kids were in the cafeteria, she headed that way.
She scanned the room but couldn't spot Lillian anywhere.
Just as she was about to call the teacher, a shriek cut through the noise of the crowd.
It was Lillian.
Sally's head whipped around toward the commotion.
Through a gap in the crowd of onlookers, she saw Nick yanking on Lillian's clothes.
"My mom made this!" he yelled at the top of his lungs. "You can't wear it! Take it off!"
"Nick, let go of me! Stop pulling on my shirt!" Lillian swatted his hands away and clutched her shirt protectively, refusing to let him touch it again.
"Why do you get to eat my mom's cooking when I don't? Why you?" Nick shouted. "I'll just throw it all away! See how you like that!"
Nick snatched the lunchbox from the table and dumped its contents onto the floor.
A wave of gasps and murmurs went through the crowd.
"Wasting food is disgusting!"
"Yeah! No matter what, you shouldn't just dump food like that!"
"What a jerk!"
The students at this school were all gifted, and none of them were afraid to speak their minds.
"You don't know anything!" Nick shot back at the crowd. "So shut up!"
His glare finally landed back on Lillian.
Lillian was crouched on the floor next to the spilled food, hugging herself and sobbing.
"Sally got up early to make that for me," she cried. "It was my favorite—ribs. Now I have nothing to eat for lunch because you dumped it out... "
Her sobs grew louder, and the other kids started defending her.
Fuming, Nick yanked her up from the floor. "Stop faking it! That stuff was mine to begin with. My mom made that food, and my mom made that shirt you're wearing, you—"
"Nick! Stop it."
A sharp voice cut through the noise from the edge of the crowd.
Hearing it, Nick froze, and his hand holding Lillian's arm trembled.
He turned and saw Sally striding toward them.
He immediately let go of Lillian and stepped back, but his face showed no hint of remorse.
Sally quickly pulled Lillian to her side, her eyes flashing with anger as she looked at Nick. "What are you doing? Why are you bullying her?"
Nick looked up at her, his voice defiant. "You make her food and you make her clothes, but you don't do any of that for me. It makes me so mad!"
"If you have a problem, you come talk to me," Sally said, her voice stern. "You don't pull on her clothes and you certainly don't throw food on the floor! What have I taught you about wasting food?" Anger flared in Sally's chest, her expression turning cold.
Nick met her gaze, his voice rising. "Am I wrong? You're supposed to be my mom! You don't make me food or clothes, but you do it for some other kid! You have no sense of responsibility at all!"
