Once they were in the backyard, Sally yanked her arm free.
Looking up, she saw the fury simmering in Brad's eyes.
"What's your problem, yelling at Nick like that?" Brad's voice was cold. "You're so gentle with other people's kids, but you're a monster to your own son. You call yourself a good mother?"
A cold, short laugh escaped Sally's lips. The resentment from these two was unbelievable.
"I'm just here to check on Howard," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "What did I possibly do to deserve a tag-team lecture from you and your son?"
Brad retorted, "If you think our kid is wrong, then you should talk to him yourself."
Sally retorted sharply, "He's only mad at me because of what happened at school. I tried to reason with him then, but did he listen?"
Brad fell silent.
"He's a kid, he gets a pass for being immature," Sally pressed. "What's your excuse?"
Brad's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
"I have to go check on Howard. I'm done with this conversation."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked away.
Brad watched her go, his hands clenched into tight fists.
As Sally reached the second-floor landing, she heard the crunch of tires on the gravel driveway.
It sounded like Jaxon's car.
'Could he be back?' The thought was a fleeting one, quickly pushed aside as Sally continued up to the third floor with her medical bag.
"Sally." Howard greeted her with a faint smile as she entered.
The butler stood by, giving her a nod.
Sally returned it and sat on the edge of the bed. "How have you been feeling, Howard? Any discomfort?"
"Just some tightness in my chest now and then, but much better than before." Howard replied.
Sally gazed at him gently. "Howard, let me see your hand. I'll check your pulse, okay?"
"Alright."
Sally focused on taking Howard's pulse, then meticulously checked his overall condition.
"That tightness is likely from being bedridden for so long. Your circulation is probably a bit sluggish. Try to spend an hour a day walking in the garden. Some fresh air will do you good, and it should clear up on its own. Your condition has improved a lot, and everything else looks normal." Sally said.
"Okay," Howard agreed. "I'll do that. I'll make time for a walk every day."
Sally smiled faintly and began to pack up her medical bag.
"Sally... "
Howard's voice pulled her from her thoughts. She turned to meet his gaze. "Yes, Howard?"
"How are things between you and Brad? Have you gotten any better?"
Sally's hands froze over her medical bag.
She'd been planning to tell Howard she wanted a divorce as soon as he was stronger. He was much better now, but this didn't feel like the right time.
"They are what they are," she said evasively.
Howard sighed, understanding her meaning. "If he gives you any trouble, you tell me. I'll always be on your side."
Sally offered a small, appreciative smile. "Okay. Thank you, Howard."
"I just really hope you two can work things out... " His voice was tinged with a faint sadness.
Sally knew what he was hoping for.
But ever since Brad and Nick had worked together to send her to prison, any love she'd had for them had turned to ash.
There was no going back.
Unsure how to respond, she just gave a slight nod and left the room with her medical bag.
As she reached the second-floor hallway, she saw a familiar figure standing at the far end.
Her hand tightened on the handle of her medical bag. It really was him.
Jaxon had been smoking, but he stubbed out his cigarette the moment he saw her.
He crossed the distance between them in a few long strides, grabbed her hand, and pulled her into his room without a word.
The door slammed shut, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet.
Jaxon pinned her against it, his grip tight on her wrist, his eyes cold as he stared down at her.
"Why didn't you accept the payment?" he asked, his voice low.
"The visit and the herbal remedies cost a few hundred dollars at most," Sally said, meeting his gaze. "You sent me 3 thousand. How was I supposed to accept that?"
Jaxon said firmly, "Because that's what your expertise is worth to me."
He was so serious Sally didn't know what to say.
"I'll send it again. Accept it." Jaxon ordered.
"I won't. Stop sending it." Sally stated coldly.
Her tone was clipped and distant as she tried to pull her wrist free.
Jaxon looked at her intently and demanded, "Are you still pissed off?"
Jaxon released her wrist only to plant his hands on her shoulders, keeping her trapped against the door.
His intense gaze made the image of Kendall kissing him flash through her mind.
"I'm not your girlfriend and I'm not your wife. Who you get close to is your business. Why would I be angry?" She tried to push his hands off her shoulders, but his grip only tightened, refusing to let her go.
"I told you, there's nothing between me and her. Why don't you believe me?" Jaxon asked.
"Whether there is or not, I couldn't care less." A frosty smile touched Sally's lips. "So please, Mr. Zale, stop bothering me—"
"You don't care?" he cut in.
Sally swallowed hard, her eyelashes fluttering.
She always got nervous when she was lying, a tell Jaxon knew all too well.
He reached out, grabbing her chin and forcing her to meet his intense gaze.
"Sally," he said, his voice a low command, "look me in the eyes and say you don't care again."
His voice rose, the force of it making her flinch.
