Sally looked at him nervously, unable to say a word.
Jaxon suddenly snatched the medical kit from her hand and tossed it aside.
Sally frowned. "Jaxon, what are you doing?"
He released her chin, planting his hands on either side of her head against the door, trapping her completely.
When Sally met his cold gaze, she saw an undeniable flicker of desire.
He leaned in, about to kiss her lips.
But Sally instinctively turned her head away, refusing him.
A flash of deep disappointment crossed Jaxon's eyes, and his voice dropped. "You're avoiding me?"
Sally said icily, "If you want to kiss someone, find someone who wants to kiss you back—"
"What if I only want to kiss you?" he cut in.
"If you want another bite mark, feel free to try." Sally's eyes held a coldness he'd never seen before.
Her threat made Jaxon let out a low, husky laugh.
The last time she'd bitten him, the mark had taken days to heal, making it painful to eat.
"I have to go," she said, her voice laced with ice as she looked up at him. "Please let me go."
But Jaxon didn't move. "Howard's condition has improved, right?" he asked instead.
"Yes," she nodded, her tone still frigid.
"Then when are you going to tell him you're divorcing Brad?" he asked bluntly.
Sally's back went rigid.
So that's what this was about. He was asking about Howard's health just to rush her divorce.
"I'm not even in a hurry, Mr. Zale—so why are you?" Sally gave a cold, mocking smile. "Don't tell me you're still thinking of keeping this messy relationship going?"
"I'm not planning on messing around with you," Jaxon said without a moment's hesitation. "I plan on being with you."
Sally's heart skipped a beat.
She stared at him in disbelief. "What? Are you really planning on having it both ways?"
A faint smile played on Jaxon's lips. "My heart's not big enough for that many people," he said casually.
His words made her tense up all over again.
Just then, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
She pushed against his chest to create some distance and pulled it out. It was a call from Lillian's smartwatch.
She answered quickly. "Lillian, what's up?"
"Sally," came the little girl's voice, "Finn cooked a lot of yummy food! He told me to call you to come home for dinner. When are you coming back?"
"I'll be back soon, sweetie," Sally replied gently.
"Okay! We'll wait for you!" Lillian said warmly.
After hanging up, her expression hardened again, the warmth gone.
She looked up at him, her voice cold. "Mr. Zale, I have to go home for dinner. Please move."
"That man still hasn't gone back to Freymoor?" Jaxon dropped his arms from the door, his gaze heavy. "How long is he planning to stay?"
"I'm not sure yet," Sally answered flatly.
Finn was supposed to stay for about ten days, but his friend's father was in very bad shape, so his visit might be extended.
How long, she didn't know.
"You don't think he's planning to move into Windmere Estates permanently, do you?" Jaxon asked.
Seeing his prying gaze, Sally suddenly felt the urge to provoke him. "And what if he does? It's my house, not yours. Your reach doesn't extend that far, does it, Mr. Zale?"
Jaxon just stared at her, speechless with anger.
Sally grabbed her medkit from the floor and walked out of his room without a backward glance.
He watched her leave, a sense of powerlessness washing over him, a feeling that wouldn't fade.
'Could there really be something going on between her and that guy?' he thought, the worry gnawing at him.
On Friday evening, Brad called Sally unexpectedly.
The nanny had to take a day off, he said, and told her to pick up Nick.
Sally was with an important patient and told him to pick up their son himself, then hung up without another word.
That must have been the last straw, because around eight o'clock, Brad showed up at Windmere Estates in a fury.
Finn and Lillian were in the yard playing catch. Seeing Brad storming toward the house, Finn stepped in his way. "Mr. Zale, what are you doing here?"
Brad looked up and recognized the man from outside the clinic. His face went cold. 'It's that man. Why is he here?'
"I'm here to see Sally," Brad snapped, his eyes narrowing. "Who the hell are you to her? What are you doing at her house?"
"I'm a friend of Sally's," Finn said, his own expression hardening. "I'm staying here for a while."
Brad stared in disbelief. "What? You're living here?"
Before Finn could answer, another voice cut in. "Brad, what are you doing here so late?"
Brad's head snapped up to see Sally standing in the doorway.
Without a word, he strode past Finn, grabbed Sally's wrist, and dragged her into the house.
Once in the living room, Sally yanked her arm free. "If you have something to say, say it! And keep your hands to yourself!"
"We'll talk about Nick later," Brad snarled, pointing toward the door. "What's the deal with that guy? Why is he living here?"
"He's an old friend from my studies. He needed a place to stay—"
"What friend?" Brad yelled. "I've never heard you mention any friend like that!"
Sally just looked at his furious face and smirked.
She couldn't help but sneer. "There's a lot you don't know about me."
"I knew it!" Brad exploded, his eyes blazing with a terrifying coldness. "The moment I saw him with you, I suspected he was the one you were with at the mansion. It was just a suspicion then, but now... you staying here with him just proves it!"
"Don't you dare say such things!" Sally shouted back, her voice rising to match his.
Jaxon suddenly snatched the medical kit from her hand and tossed it aside.
