Finn let go of her hand and took another drag from his half-smoked cigarette.
After a long silence, Finn said softly, "Sally, I've already warned you about this. Once you get involved in a dangerous relationship, it's like playing with fire."
Sally rested her hand, still holding the cotton swab, on the railing, remaining silent.
Finn continued, "Speaking as a man, if his wife did something like this, there's just no way he could forgive her that easily."
Sally shot back at Finn, her voice seething with anger. "He and his mistress are no saints either. How come he gets away with it while I can't?"
Finn flicked the ash from his cigarette and turned to look at her again. "So, am I right to assume you're getting back at Brad? Do you still have feelings for him?"
Sally instinctively shook her head. "I stopped loving him a long time ago. From the moment I went to prison, I completely gave up on him. So whatever's between me and Jaxon, it's not about revenge at all."
"You're lying," Finn stated flatly, leaving no room for doubt.
Sally's hand froze for a moment, betraying her inner turmoil.
'To be honest,' Sally admitted to herself, 'I did start out with a bit of revenge in mind. But the deeper I got, the more I realized I was in too deep to walk away. The act gradually became all too real.'
Finn said, "Let's not even talk about whether Brad will let you off the hook if he finds out. But Jaxon is no ordinary man. Once you get involved with him, you might not be able to walk away unscathed.
"You're still married, yet you're already taking such big risks. Aren't you afraid you'll get yourself in trouble?"
As Finn's meaningful words reached her ears, Sally's heart sank like a stone.
"Before Brad finds out, it's not too late to back off. Stop seeing Jaxon from now on, and divorce Brad as soon as possible. Before I leave, you must come clean about this to Mr. Zale. Do you hear me?" he said.
Finn stubbed out his cigarette, fixing her with an intense, unwavering stare. Sally locked eyes with Finn, seeing a profound concern in his gaze.
Finn helped her a lot. In her heart, he meant more than any blood relative ever could.
Finn always gave her that quiet, unspoken sense of family, like no matter what happened, he'd always have her back. That feeling meant everything.
"What are you thinking, Sally?" Finn asked.
"Alright," Sally said quickly, snapping out of her thoughts.
In Longbay, Jaxon was just about to get up and head back to his room when a sudden knock sounded at the front door.
At the sound, Jaxon looked up to see the driver, Wade, walk in, carrying the pastries Jaxon had bought.
These were Sally and Lillian's favorite pastries. With a new flavor just released today, Jaxon bought some for them to try.
But remembering how distant Sally had been toward him lately, Jaxon felt awkward delivering them himself, so he asked Wade to take them over instead.
Jaxon's brow furrowed slightly. "Why didn't you deliver the pastries?"
Wade replied, "Mr. Zale, when I arrived at Windmere Estates, Brad suddenly showed up and got into a fight with Finn. That's why I didn't dare go inside."
At this, Jaxon's face turned icy. "A fight? What the hell were they fighting about?"
"Well, uh—" Wade hesitated, clearly struggling to bring himself to say it outright.
He was well aware of the situation between Jaxon and Sally, yet still didn't dare to speak up.
"Go on." Jaxon's voice suddenly sharpened, rising in both volume and intensity.
Seeing Jaxon's stern expression, Wade hesitated, then finally gritted his teeth and blurted out, "Brad suspects Mrs. Zale had an affair with Finn. Their argument turned physical."
"How could they have slept together?" Jaxon's brows furrowed deeper, his eyes glinting with icy fury.
"I heard that Mrs. Zale allegedly had an affair with another man at Mr. Howard Zale's birthday party." Wade instinctively lowered his gaze to the floor, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Brad suspects it was Finn."
Jaxon's tense nerves instantly eased at those words. 'I knew it,' he thought. 'There's no way Sally would ever do something so foolish.'
"Anyone hurt?" Jaxon's voice was low and heavy, his eyes clouded with uncertainty.
Though he never mentioned her name, Wade naturally knew exactly who Jaxon meant.
"Mrs. Zale wasn't hurt, but both Finn and Brad sustained some minor injuries, nothing too serious, though," said Wade.
Jaxon nodded slightly and said nothing more.
After Wade left, silence settled over the living room.
Jaxon pulled out his phone, itching to send Sally a message, but the chat screen showed she still hadn't replied to his last one.
This whole situation was driving him crazy. He had never felt this helpless, not even at work.
Just then, the sudden ring of a phone shattered the brief silence. He glanced down at his phone screen, where Kendall's name flashed.
After a brief hesitation, Jaxon finally picked up. "What do you want?"
"Jaxon, I'm not feeling well. Could you come see me?" Kendall's voice carried a touch of feigned vulnerability.
Jaxon's frown deepened as her words reached his ears.
That fiasco had pushed his relationship with Sally to the brink of collapse. Since then, he'd deliberately kept his distance from Kendall, hoping to defuse the situation.
"If you're really sick, go to the hospital. I'm not a doctor. There's no point in my coming." Jaxon's voice held an icy edge she'd never heard before.
"Jaxon, I really—" Before Kendall could say another word, Jaxon hung up on her without a second thought.
That night, Sally lay in bed, tossing and turning as she struggled to fall asleep.
Sally couldn't stop thinking about what Finn had said to her that night. She just couldn't calm down.
Sally thought, 'The family dinner is just two days away. That's the perfect time to bring up my divorce from Brad to Mr. Zale. Besides, his condition has stabilized now, so hearing this news shouldn't affect his health. Guess it's time to face the music.'
Once she made up her mind, sleep became even more elusive. Sally tossed and turned until around 3 a.m. before finally sinking into a deep sleep.
The next day, when Sally arrived at the clinic with dark circles, Carlos looked at her curiously and asked, "Sally, what were you up to last night? Did you pull an all-nighter?"
Sally nodded instinctively. "Might as well have pulled an all-nighter—crashed at three, then up at six to make breakfast for the kid."
Carlos asked, "Sally, what's wrong? Did something happen?"
After a long silence, Finn said softly, "Sally, I've already warned you about this. Once you get involved in a dangerous relationship, it's like playing with fire."
