With those words, Jaxon strode into the clinic without a backward glance. Jaxon's words snapped Finn out of his train of thought. Unconsciously, the hand holding his cigarette bent it out of shape.
Looking at the bent cigarette butt, a bitter smile played on Finn's lips.
Finn thought bitterly, 'Psychology can analyze everyone else's problems but never my own. Those feelings I thought had faded are actually growing back like wild weeds.
'It's not that I buried my feelings. It's just that Jaxon was too formidable, completely reigniting my desire.'
When Jaxon entered the clinic, Carlos was at the front desk, looking over some papers.
"Give this to her when she returns," Jaxon instructed.
At the sound of his voice, Carlos's head jerked up.
Meeting Jaxon's icy gaze, his hand holding the slip of paper froze mid-motion.
Jaxon wasn't much older than Carlos, but his commanding presence always left Carlos feeling intimidated.
"Thanks." Carlos quickly reached out to take the item from Jaxon.
Seeing that Jaxon didn't seem to be leaving, Carlos asked curiously, "Mr. Zale, is there something else? Or did you come to see Sally for a follow-up?"
Jaxon's expression darkened momentarily when he caught the curiosity in Carlos's eyes.
"The real reason I brought these pastries was just to see her," he thought. "After what happened last night, it must have affected her mood. I just wanted to know how she was doing. Too bad, she wasn't here"
"Mr. Zale, if you don't mind, may I check your pulse?" Carlos watched him eagerly, his smile deepening.
"No need." Jaxon shot him a cool glance. "How's Sally been doing lately?"
"Well, how should I put it?" Carlos's brows furrowed. "Take last night, for example. She didn't go to bed until 3 a.m., then got up again at 6 a.m. to make breakfast for her kid. She looked exhausted, with big dark circles under her eyes, not in great shape, honestly.
"I asked her what happened, but she wouldn't tell me. Still, I can tell something's wrong. Mr. Zale, why don't you go check on her?" Carlos started rambling on and on. But Jaxon wasn't in the mood to listen. He cut in, "Got it."
Without waiting for a response, he strode off. When Jaxon reached the door, the figure who had been standing beside it had already vanished without a trace.
He pulled out his phone to message Sally, only to see that her phone was turned off. 'Tomorrow's the family gathering day. She'll definitely come home for that,' Jaxon thought. 'No need to rush this.'
Sally didn't get home until 9 p.m. that night. After a long day, completely exhausted, she collapsed onto her bed and fell into a deep sleep.
The next day was the family gathering. Early that morning, Lauren called to inform Sally that Howard wanted her home for dinner. Apparently, Howard was worried Brad hadn't told her, so he'd specifically asked Lauren to make the call.
Sally had known about tonight's family gathering for a while, and she'd already decided to attend. After all, she planned to personally bring up their divorce with Howard.
Finn's words last night had been a real wake-up call, solidifying her decision.
Even if she couldn't completely break ties with Jaxon just yet, at the very least, starting the divorce process was imperative.
If their relationship ever became public, the consequences would be disastrous. This was something she simply couldn't afford to delay any longer.
Sally finished up at the clinic around 5 p.m., changed into a form-fitting dress, did her makeup meticulously, and then drove to the Zale Mansion.
As Sally stepped into the courtyard of the Zale Mansion, she spotted Howard and the butler deep in conversation in the garden.
Bringing up divorce right after she got back might seem inappropriate, but this was something she needed to discuss with Howard alone. Too many people around would only complicate matters. And right now, this was the perfect opportunity.
After finding an excuse to send the butler away, Sally and Howard sat facing each other.
She picked up the pot, poured a cup of coffee for him, and offered it respectfully with both hands. "Mr. Zale, please have some coffee," Sally said.
"Thank you, Sally," Howard smiled warmly.
After the elders finished their tea, Sally took a steadying breath and said softly, "Mr. Zale, I know it might seem abrupt to bring this up right after I've just come back, but if I don't say it now, it's been weighing on me."
Howard had just set his cup down when his eyes snapped up. His voice carried restrained anger. "Is Brad giving you trouble again?"
"No," Sally bit her lip, then finally blurted out, "I want a divorce."
At the same moment, Jaxon, who had just stepped through the door, stopped dead in his tracks when he heard those words.
He quickly darted behind a large tree, leaned against it, and listened intently to their conversation. The garden fell into an oppressive silence.
Howard took a deep breath, visibly struggling to process what he'd just heard.
Seeing his reaction, Sally quickly interjected, "Mr. Zale, please don't get upset. It's really not worth it. Your health comes first."
Howard let out a gentle sigh. "Ever since you brought up divorcing Brad last time, there hasn't been any news about it for ages. I thought you'd given up on the idea. So why bring it up again now?"
"I've always wanted this," Sally said quietly. "I just didn't tell you before because I was worried about your health. The truth is, Brad and I—our relationship fell apart three years ago.
"After I got out of prison, I moved straight into Windmere Estates. I haven't been back to the Orchard Villa since."
Howard said gently, "But even if the love is gone, you can always try to rekindle it. You and Brad already have a child together. Divorcing now would really hurt the kid. Why not listen to me this once and try to rebuild your relationship? Give Brad another chance, would you?"
Sally was momentarily stunned by Howard's words. She never expected Howard to try to persuade her from the child's perspective. But her mind was made up. A few words from others couldn't possibly change her decision now.
"You must have known about his affair with Miss Yasmin for some time now. A man whose heart isn't with me?" Sally paused, then asked tentatively, "Mr. Zale, do you really think I should still stay in this marriage?"
Howard was instantly torn. 'She's endured so much hardship over the years,' he thought.
"How about this? Let me step in and mediate? I'll make sure justice is served for you. Would that work for you?" he offered.
Sally lifted her gaze again, locking eyes with the old man before her.
