Jaxon cupped her chin, his kiss suddenly deepening as he tried to pry her lips apart.
Sally's heart was pounding wildly in her chest. Instinctively, she reached out and pressed her hands against Jaxon's chest in an attempt to push him away.
But Jaxon only pulled her closer, holding her so tightly that their bodies pressed together, clothes against clothes, not even a breath of air between them.
Sally went from initial resistance to surrender in under ten seconds.
Their previous encounter had happened under the influence of alcohol and hadn't left a particularly deep impression on her, but this time she was fully conscious, watching herself, little by little, surrender to his tenderness.
Resistance was futile; she was utterly lost. The deeper they went, the wilder Jaxon became.
Jaxon seemed to sense her unease. Leaning in, he murmured softly in her ear, "Relax, sweetheart. No need to be nervous."
"Jaxon, stop this right now," Sally said. She remembered all too well just how wild things had gotten between them last time.
Sally thought, 'Besides, with things still so ambiguous between him and Kendall, how could I possibly get involved with him right now?'
"I'm just doing what comes naturally with the woman I desire. What's wrong with that?" Jaxon gripped her waist firmly, his gaze darkening as he leaned in closer.
As those words reached her ears, Sally's eyes flew open in shock. She stared at Jaxon in utter disbelief.
Even though Jaxon had never once said he liked her, not to mention love, Sally couldn't shake the feeling that he might actually have feelings for her. Otherwise, he wouldn't have kept pursuing her like this every time they were together.
But after witnessing that intimate moment between Jaxon and Kendall at Kendall's place last time, Sally gradually let go of that idea.
"The woman you desire?" Sally gradually sobered up, her lips curling into a cold smirk. "Mr. Zale, you sure have quite a few women you fancy. There's Ms. Harper, then there's me. Is there a third? Or maybe even a fourth?"
"Is that really how you see me?" Jaxon suddenly froze, his gaze locking intently on her.
Sally sneered, "Ever since your ambiguous entanglement with Ms. Harper, I've found you harder and harder to read. You put on this devoted act in front of me, yet keep getting involved with other women. The men in the Zale family are so shameless."
Sally raised her hand to push him away, but Jaxon instantly clamped down on her wrist with an iron grip.
Jaxon's gaze darkened, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "What happened with Kendall last time was completely unexpected. She came onto me, and by the time I tried to push her away, you'd already walked in."
Sally snapped, "I don't want to hear your excuses. It's none of my business."
Jaxon retorted, "How can this have nothing to do with you? Dad has already agreed to the divorce. Once you're divorced, it's only natural that we'll be together."
"Since when did I agree to be with you? Don't flatter yourself." Sally glared up at him, her eyes blazing with barely contained fury.
Jaxon suddenly released her wrist and cupped her face in his hands.
He gazed at Sally tenderly, his eyes filled with deep affection. "Whether you believe me or not, there's truly nothing between Kendall and me. You're the only woman in my life. I've explained this to you before."
Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jaxon's, her upper lashes fluttering involuntarily as their eyes locked. His unexpected confession made her heart skip a beat, then sink deeper and deeper.
Jaxon suddenly lowered his head and brushed a gentle kiss against her lips. Then, looking into her eyes, he murmured, "So, could you try to love me too? Please, don't fall for anyone else."
Sally swallowed hard, her deep, intense gaze fixed on him. Her eyelashes suddenly fluttered even faster, betraying her racing heart. For the first time, Sally could actually hear a hint of pleading in his voice.
Naturally, Sally knew exactly who Jaxon was referring to when he mentioned other men. He was completely mistaken. He thought she was in love with Finn.
"Besides, I already let it slip to Finn about us. Even if you really have feelings for him, do you honestly think he'd still want to be with you after—" Jaxon added.
"What exactly did you say to Finn?" Before Jaxon could finish, Sally cut him off sharply.
Jaxon lowered his gaze, and the moment their eyes met, he caught a flicker of nervousness deep in Sally's eyes. It was that flicker of nervousness that sent a surge of jealousy straight through Jaxon's heart.
Jaxon thought bitterly, 'Does she really care about him that much?'
"In any case, you're mine, and I won't let anyone take you away from me." Jaxon's voice dripped with raw possessiveness.
Sally stared at Jaxon, her brows furrowed. "What exactly did you say to Finn?"
She was nervous, afraid that Jaxon might say something too revealing.
Though Finn already knew about her relationship with Jaxon, Sally hadn't gone into too much detail. But when it came to guys talking to each other, Jaxon might slip out.
Jaxon said, "Do you love him that much? When did you start falling for him? Have you been lying to me all along—using it as an excuse while secretly pining for him behind my back?"
"Jaxon, I do not love him," Sally hissed through gritted teeth, her voice trembling with anger.
"Even now, you're still lying to me?" Jaxon raised his voice sharply, his gaze turning ice-cold.
Sally's chest felt so heavy, like there was a boulder pressing down on her. She was stuck, unable to move forward or back. Sally whispered, "I'm exhausted. Please, just let me go—"
Before she could finish, Jaxon cut her off sharply, his voice tinged with amusement. "Tired already? We haven't even started yet."
Then, Jaxon suddenly leaned in again, his fingers moving deliberately as he unbuttoned her cardigan, one button at a time.
At this moment, Sally realized with startling clarity. Once one tangled with Jaxon, there was no breaking free, like this secret relationship that had to stay hidden in the shadows for now and like tonight. Like this secret relationship that has to stay hidden in the shadows for now.
Sally ceased resisting, letting Jaxon guide her, from the couch to the bed, then finally into the bathroom. From the couch to the bed, then finally into the bathroom*****
By the time they were finally done, it was already well past midnight.
Fresh from the bathroom, Sally found Jaxon already fast asleep. Gazing at Jaxon's handsome face in peaceful slumber, Sally felt an indescribable mix of emotions welling up in her chest. Gazing at Jaxon's handsome face in peaceful slumber, Sally felt an indescribable mix of emotions welling up in her chest.
An inexplicable feeling was taking root in her heart, spreading wildly like untamed weeds.
Only now did Sally realize that they had long since passed the point of no return. Thankfully, that marriage in name only was finally over.
Just as Sally was about to get into bed, her phone on the nightstand suddenly started ringing. Glancing down, she saw Abigail calling.
She quickly grabbed her phone and hurried back into the bathroom before answering in a hushed whisper, "Abigail, what's up?"
