Finn used to stroke her head, but never before had she felt the gesture so intimate.
Almost instinctively, Sally looked up. When she saw the tenderness in Finn's eyes, she was momentarily dazed.
Finn called softly, "Sally?"
At the sound of Finn's voice, Sally instinctively snapped back to reality. She composed herself, curling her lips into a faint smile. "Whatever you think is best," she said softly.
Finn asked, "Are we still good on groceries? Want me to pick up any of your favorites?"
Sally said, "No need. Abigail stocked up on groceries yesterday. The fridge is still full."
Finn nodded gently and took his hand off her head. "Alright, I'll head back now. You come home early."
Sally smiled and nodded, then watched as Finn walked away.
Carlos had to leave early today due to family matters, leaving Sally alone in the clinic.
With no patients around, Sally figured she'd take a short break, tidy up a bit, and then head home.
Several drawers in the herbal cabinet were left ajar. Sally got up and walked over to push them shut.
"So, what exactly were you two talking about just now?" Just then, a chillingly deep voice suddenly sounded right behind her, making Sally freeze in place.
Sally shuddered at the sudden voice behind her. Her hand, still gripping the herbal drawer, froze mid-motion.
At the sound, Sally spun around and immediately spotted Jaxon standing by the checkout counter. Her eyes flashed with annoyance. "Why do you appear so suddenly?"
Jaxon leaned on the counter, his gaze icy. "You look pretty shaken up—what, feeling guilty about something behind my back? Or were you two just getting a little too cozy back there? Talking about things you shouldn't?"
Sally cast him a cold glance, then turned away and went back to pushing the drawers shut.
Without even looking back, Sally shot back, "So what if I did? So what if I didn't? What business is it of yours, Mr. Zale?"
Sally could clearly sense Jaxon moving around the checkout counter, striding purposefully toward her.
Just as Sally was about to slide the last drawer shut, Jaxon's hand shot out from the side and gripped her wrist in a vice-like hold. In an instant, Jaxon had her pinned against the herbal cabinet.
Bang. The impact was brutal. A sharp pain shot up Sally's spine as her back slammed against the cabinet.
Sally looked up at him, meeting his gaze. "Jaxon, what the hell are you doing?"
Jaxon suddenly grabbed her chin with his long fingers, his voice low and laced with danger. "You were in my bed just last night, and now you're acting all distant? Don't you think that's a little much?"
Hearing Jaxon's bold words, Sally's heart skipped a beat, then started pounding like crazy.
When it came to things like this, she knew Jaxon well enough. If she didn't give him a satisfactory answer tonight, he probably wouldn't let her off the hook.
After steadying herself, Sally replied softly, "Nothing important. We were just deciding what to have for dinner tonight. He said he'd cook for us."
"That's it?" Jaxon's voice dripped with disbelief.
Sally lifted her gaze and locked eyes with Jaxon. In the depths of his eyes, she caught a flicker of confusion.
Sally retorted softly, "What else? What did you think we were talking about?"
Jaxon kept Sally's hands pinned firmly behind her back, his smoldering gaze locked on her from above.
Sally's brows furrowed deeper as she realized he had no intention of letting go. "Mr. Zale, are you really going to keep me pinned like this? Patients could walk in at any moment. Wouldn't that be highly inappropriate if someone saw us?"
Jaxon gave her a lingering, penetrating look before finally releasing her hands.
Leaning against the counter with his hands braced on the edge, Jaxon looked down at her with a piercing gaze. "Mrs. Zale, sneaking out after what we did last night—care to explain yourself?"
At those words, Sally's back went rigid for a split second. 'But wasn't Jaxon already asleep last night?' Sally wondered. 'How could he possibly know I left in the middle of the night?'
Jaxon noticed the slight furrow between Sally's brows, as if he'd already read her mind.
He tapped his fingers lightly on the counter and said coolly, "When I woke up and didn't see you this morning, I checked the surveillance footage. Saw you leave right after your shower. How really—"
Jaxon instinctively clenched his jaw, then let out a low, husky laugh—but left the rest unsaid.
Sally still frowned, looking at him in confusion. "Really what?"
Jaxon suddenly wrapped an arm around Sally's waist, pulling her close in one swift motion. Sally jolted slightly once more, startled by the sudden move.
Jaxon fixed his smoldering gaze on her, his voice edged with displeasure. "Really ruthless."
Sally pressed her hands against Jaxon's chest, trying to push him away and put some distance between them. But Jaxon's arm stayed locked tight around her waist, refusing to let go.
"Let go of me right now. I don't even know if Brad is still having me tailed—what if his men see us like this? We—" she said.
"So what if they see us? Didn't Dad already approve your divorce? I bet Brad's drafting the divorce papers as we speak." Before Sally could finish speaking, Jaxon cut her off abruptly.
She looked up at him, her eyes wide with disbelief and confusion. "Didn't I already give him the divorce papers? Why would he need to draft a new one?"
"Guess he kept you in the dark?" Jaxon withdrew his hand from her waist, his tone deliberately offhand. "Dad personally ordered Brad to split half his assets with you—supposedly as compensation."
Sally straightened up, her eyes widening in even greater shock. "When did this happen? Mr. Zale never told me about this."
Jaxon said, "All this went down just this morning. If you hadn't snuck out last night, you could've caught the whole show. Seriously, what made you rush back at three in the morning—unless you were dying to see Finn again, huh?"
An icy glint hardened Jaxon's gaze.
Sally shot Jaxon a glare she couldn't hold back. "Seriously? Do you think my whole life revolves around nothing but romance and drama? I do have other things going on, you know."
Jaxon let out a low, husky chuckle but said nothing more.
Sally walked past the checkout counter and headed for the break room. "Abigail called me suddenly last night and said Lillian was up all night with diarrhea and vomiting. That's why I had to leave in such a hurry."
Jaxon glanced back at Sally's retreating figure. His hands on the counter edges clenched involuntarily for a brief moment.
He thought, 'So that's why. Lillian wasn't feeling well. No wonder she left in such a hurry last night. I totally misread the situation.'
Jaxon quickly caught up with her, his voice urgent. "How's Lillian doing? Is she better now?"
