"I don't know who spread it," Lillian said with a sob, her face contorted with grief. "But that's what everyone's saying now."
Sally's expression turned utterly grim. At that school, only Nick truly knew Lillian, and he was probably the only one aware of her family background.
'There's no way a kid like Nick could have caused such a stir on his own,' Sally thought. 'Someone must be pulling the strings behind the scenes. Was it Brad or Lena who put him up to this?'
Last time at the parent-teacher conference, Sally witnessed Nick bullying Lillian. She was about to step in and discipline Nick, but Brad showed up and stopped her.
Sally wondered, 'Could it be Nick, then?' The moment this thought crossed Sally's mind, an icy glint flashed in her eyes.
"Sally, you're the best person in the world. Even if you've been to prison, you're still the kindest and most wonderful person. I don't care what they say about me, but I just can't stand them talking about you like that," Lillian murmured.
Just then, Lillian's cute voice suddenly snapped Sally out of her thoughts. At the sound, Sally looked up and instantly saw the hurt in Lillian's eyes.
'What a good girl,' Sally thought to herself. 'Even after being bullied at school, she still came home and stood up for me.'
Sally swiftly reached out and pulled Lillian into a tight embrace.
Sally gently stroked Lillian's back, her voice soft and full of warmth as she comforted her. "Lillian, don't take their words to heart. I will investigate this thoroughly and find out who's really behind it. I promise I'll make things right for you."
"Thank you, Sally." Lillian reached out her tiny hands, wrapped them around Sally's neck, and planted a gentle kiss on her cheek.
At that moment, Sally's heart just melted.
Sally originally thought Brad was behind this, so bright and early the next morning, she headed straight to the Zale Group.
After all, this involved bullying an innocent child. There was no way Sally could tolerate it. This was her bottom line.
"Mrs. Zale, Mr. Zale is currently in a meeting with an important business partner. I'm afraid you can't go in right now," said Nathan.
"I have urgent business with Mr. Zale. Let me through—now," Sally demanded.
Nathan tried to block Sally's way, but she forcefully slapped his hand aside.
Sally's hand was already on the doorknob. Nathan tried to stop her, but it was too late.
The door to the Zale Group's executive office burst open as Sally pushed her way in. Her gaze immediately landed on the man seated across the room.
'So, the important business partner Nathan mentioned is actually him?' Sally wondered. 'Brad did mention wanting to work with the Crownstone Group before. Who would've guessed they'd actually go through with it?'
Jaxon sat on the sofa, his long legs crossed, exuding an unmistakable air of authority. When Sally barged in, a faint crease appeared between his brows.
Hearing the sound, Brad turned around. When his gaze fell upon Sally, a similar flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.
"Mr. Zale, my sincere apologies. Mrs. Zale insisted she had something urgent to discuss with you. I simply couldn't stop her," From behind Sally, Nathan called out, his voice full of apology.
Brad waved him off, and Nathan quickly exited. "Jaxon and I are in the middle of an important business discussion. Whatever it is can wait."
"There's no delaying this. Business can wait, but this—we need to talk right now." Sally's complete focus was locked on Brad.
However, out of the corner of her eye, she caught the icy glare Jaxon was shooting her from across the sofa.
But Sally couldn't care less about anything else right now. All she wanted was to get to the bottom of things as quickly as possible and put an end to the school bullying once and for all.
"Sally?" Brad's face darkened as he glared at her. "Must you always be so—"
"Brad, it's fine." Jaxon's calm voice came from across the room. "Go ahead and talk to Mrs. Zale first—we can continue our conversation later."
With those words, Jaxon began to rise from his seat.
Brad, however, was quicker to stand up. "Jaxon, please wait here for a moment. I'll take her to the conference room for a quick talk—I'll be right back."
Brad shot to his feet, strode over to Sally, and with his well-defined fingers firmly gripping her elbow, led her straight toward the exit before she could react.
Sally barely had time to react before Brad yanked her out of the executive office.
Jaxon remained seated on the sofa, his piercing gaze locked on their backs. His hands, resting at his sides, clenched abruptly into tight fists.
Jaxon's eyes darkened with intensifying ferocity. 'They're already divorced. What could Sally possibly want from Brad now?' Jaxon wondered. 'Not to mention, she looks so frantic.'
Standing nearby, Caleb was equally baffled.
In the conference room, after Brad slammed the conference room door shut, he forcefully shoved Sally into a chair.
Brad pulled out a cigarette and stuck it between his lips. "Alright, spit it out," he said sharply. "What's so urgent that you had to barge in like this?"
As Brad reached for his lighter, Sally shot to her feet and, without a moment's hesitation, snatched the cigarette from his lips and flung it aside.
Brad's brow furrowed involuntarily at her abrupt move. "What the hell did I do to piss you off now?"
Sally glared at Brad, her voice trembling with rage. "Did you put Nick up to spreading those vicious rumors at school, saying that Lillian is an unwanted orphan with no family, and that I have a criminal record?"
Sally glared at him, her eyes icy with menace and her expression grim.
At those words, confusion flickered in Brad's eyes. "When did I ever put Nick up to something like that? Don't put words in my mouth."
'Of course I knew he'd never admit it that easily,' Sally thought.
"Are you mad at me for disciplining Nick at school? If you have a problem, say it to my face. Take your anger out on me, not on a kid. What kind of man does that?" Furious, Sally shoved Brad hard in the chest.
Sally shoved Brad with all her might, sending him stumbling backward several steps.
After steadying himself, Brad swiftly seized Sally's wrist. "What the hell are you talking about? I've told you I didn't do it. Can't you understand? Why are you so damn determined to pin this on me?"
Sally snapped, "If it wasn't you, then who was it? Nick is the only one at school who truly knows Lillian. He's definitely the one spreading those rumors, and honestly, I can't think of anyone else but you who could have put him up to it."
"That's absolutely preposterous. No matter how bad things are between us, I'd never stoop so low as to target a child—" said Brad.
Sally snapped, "You'd even send your wife to prison. What wouldn't you stoop to?"
