Before Brad could finish his sentence, Sally cut him off abruptly. She wrenched her wrist free from Brad's grasp, shooting him a look of unprecedented fury.
Brad seized Sally by the waist, spun her lightly around, and pinned her firmly against the table edge.
"We have been together for so many years, after all. Do I really seem like such a bastard to you?" he said.
Sally raised her eyes to meet his gaze, but remained silent.
"Speak," he demanded. Brad's expression darkened with fury as he roughly grabbed Sally by the chin. His grip was crushing, the pain forcing a grimace across Sally's face.
Unable to hold back, Sally opened her mouth and bit down hard on the webbing between Brad's thumb and index finger, defiant to the end.
Brad instantly let her go, wincing in pain, and shot her a furious glare. "What the hell, are you some kind of rabid dog? Just biting out of nowhere."
"Why did you put your hands on me?" Sally snapped, her expression stern. "I'm going to get to the bottom of this. If I find out you were really the one who put Nick up to spreading those rumors, I swear I won't let any of you get away with it."
"What if it turns out we're not the ones behind it? Can I sue you for slander then?" Brad was fuming, his chest heaving with barely contained rage.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Caleb's voice came from outside. "Mr. Zale, Jaxon has some urgent business to attend to and needs to leave now."
Brad's expression softened a little. "Alright," he said. "I'll walk Jaxon out."
Brad shot Sally a final, icy glare, then strode purposefully toward the conference room door. When Brad reached the doorway, Caleb was already gone.
After Brad left, Sally followed him out, her mind a tangled mess. Without thinking, she turned and slipped into the nearby restroom.
"What were you discussing with him?" As Sally was washing her hands with her head bowed, a deep male voice suddenly spoke from behind her.
Sally froze the moment she heard the voice, her back going rigid. She jerked her head up and met Jaxon's reflection staring back at her from the mirror.
'Didn't he leave?' Sally thought, surprised.
Jaxon leaned against the wall, arms crossed over his chest, his impassive gaze fixed on her reflection in the mirror.
"Nothing major." Sally swallowed hard and deliberately changed the subject. "Caleb just said you had to leave. Why are you still here?"
Without hesitation, Jaxon strode forward, seized her wrist, and dragged her toward the women's restroom.
Bang. As soon as they stepped into the stall, Jaxon slammed the door shut behind them.
The next instant, Sally found herself slammed against the stall partition, completely immobilized.
With one hand, Jaxon seized both of Sally's wrists and wrenched them behind her back. His other hand clamped onto her chin, forcing her head up to meet his piercing gaze.
Jaxon's eyes darkened with barely contained fury as he sneered, "Mrs. Zale, don't tell me you're here to reminisce with your ex-husband?"
Sally's lashes fluttered briefly. She said bluntly, "Don't be ridiculous. Why would I do that?"
Jaxon's voice dropped to an icy whisper. "Then what the hell were you doing with him?"
Sally frowned slightly, her irritation evident. "Jaxon, do you really intend to keep talking to me in this position?"
Noticing the irritation on Sally's face, Jaxon finally released her and leaned back against the opposite partition wall. "Talk. What's this all about?"
Sally told Jaxon the whole story from start to finish.
After he heard her out, Jaxon's brow furrowed slightly. "So, you suspect Brad was behind this?"
"Yes." Sally nodded slightly. "Honestly, I can't think of anyone else who'd go out of their way to spread such rumors. He might be doing this to get back at me for Nick."
"I know there's bad blood between you and Brad, but he's probably not behind this. You're likely barking up the wrong tree," said Jaxon.
"Wrong person?" Sally frowned, fixing a sharp look on Mr. Zale. "Then tell me, Mr. Zale—who do you think put the child up to this?"
Jaxon answered without hesitation, "Lena."
At his words, Sally froze for a moment. 'Come to think of it, he might actually have a point,' she thought. 'After all, Brad is always buried in work. He's already up to his neck in it.
'Where would he even find the energy to scheme with Nick against Lillian? Besides, these schemes really seem more like something a woman would devise.'
"It's simple to prove this. Just do as I say, and the truth will reveal itself." Jaxon worked his jaw, a careless smile playing at his lips.
Sally looked up at him, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "How?"
"Before I answer you," Jaxon murmured, moving in close as his hand slid around her waist, pulling her flush against him. "Answer me this first. Have you signed the divorce papers?"
Sally paused for a moment, then shook her head. "We're still working on the draft, but it should be finalized soon."
"Once you sign the divorce papers, you won't be his anymore. Maybe it's time you started thinking about—" Jaxon said.
"Go get the car ready. I'll be right there." Before Jaxon could finish speaking, Brad's voice suddenly carried over from the men's restroom next door. He was on the phone.
With only a thin wall separating the men's and women's restrooms, anyone next door could easily overhear their conversation.
When they were talking in the women's restroom, Brad in the men's restroom would definitely be able to hear them.
Sally's heart began pounding wildly for no apparent reason.
Jaxon suddenly leaned in, his lips brushing her ear as he lowered his voice to a whisper. "Maybe it's time you started thinking about us?"
Sally's lashes fluttered incessantly. She raised her eyes and met his gaze. Deep in his eyes, an intense desire burned.
The next instant, Jaxon closed the distance between them and seized her lips in a sudden, hungry kiss.
The sudden kiss made Sally's heart pound even harder, especially knowing that Brad was just on the other side of that thin wall.
Jaxon's kiss deepened, overwhelming Sally until she could no longer resist.
After what felt like an eternity of two minutes, the men's restroom next door finally fell silent.
After Brad left, Jaxon finally let her go, a contented smirk playing on his lips.
"Did you do that on purpose?" Sally scowled at him, her voice dropping to a hushed, tense tone.
Jaxon's hand rested lightly on the nape of her neck, his fingers tracing slow, deliberate circles against her skin.
Jaxon shrugged, a lazy smirk on his lips. His tone was casual, almost careless. "You could say that."
"Mr. Zale, you're completely losing it," Sally snapped.
Jaxon smirked faintly. "What's love without a little madness?"
After shooting Jaxon a fierce glare, Sally abruptly ignored him, shoved him aside, yanked the door open, and stormed out.
By the time Jaxon stepped out after her, Sally had already slipped into the elevator.
A mesmerizing smile instinctively played on Jaxon's lips. 'Baby, the day is almost here. This secret between us has stayed in the dark long enough, time to bring it into the light,' he wondered.
