Sally turned at the sound and couldn't help but frown when she saw who was approaching, Lena.
"Lena, you're finally here." Seeing his support arrive, Nick rushed over and clung to her arm. "Lillian was bullied, but Mom keeps insisting it was me. Lena, please help me out."
Sally fixed her gaze on her son. After all, he was her own flesh and blood—she could tell right away something was off.
Nick had never been good at lying; every time he tried, his eyelashes would flutter wildly. There was never an exception.
And right now, his lashes were going a mile a minute. Sally couldn't help but think he was definitely lying.
Lena shot Sally a furious glare, her eyes icy cold. "Mrs. Zale, Nick already told me about the rumors being spread about Lillian at school. He has absolutely nothing to do with it. Why do you insist on pinning this on him and refusing to let it go?"
Lillian instinctively shrank back at the sight of Lena's expression, edging behind Sally and avoiding Lena's gaze, not daring to make eye contact.
Her hand clutched Sally's tighter, the grip involuntarily tightening for a moment. Sally could clearly sense Lillian's fear.
Sally pulled Lillian completely behind her, shielding her, her hand never letting go of Lillian's trembling grasp.
Watching from across the room, Nick saw red. It was the first time he had ever seen his mother defend another kid. A wave of resentment instantly surged through Nick.
"Exactly. You need proof to make false accusations, Mom. How can you accuse me like this without any evidence?" Nick's voice trembled with hurt as he stared coldly at Sally.
Sally lowered her gaze, locking eyes with Nick. With a dark expression, she said, "You two are new here and didn't know anyone before. Out of everyone in this school, you know Lillian best. If it wasn't you, then who spread these rumors?"
As soon as Sally's words fell, the room plunged into a heavy silence.
Nick was completely at a loss for words. He nervously looked up at Lena beside him, clearly waiting for her to speak. This tiny detail hadn't escaped Sally's notice.
"I know you wouldn't spread rumors about Lillian for no reason. You're still so young. If someone hadn't egged you on, you'd never do something like this. Tell me the truth, Nick. Was it Lena who put you up to it?" Sally pressed on.
Nick was torn, completely at a loss for words.
Lena, standing off to the side, immediately flared up after hearing Sally's words. "What nonsense are you spouting? When did I ever put him up to anything?"
"I'm not here to argue. I'm here to seek justice and nip these rumors in the bud." Sally's voice was steel-edged, every word dripping with icy resolve.
Lena sneered, her smile icy and dripping with indifference, "Well, let me ask you this. Of all the stories people are spreading, which one is actually a rumor?
"The fact that Lillian is an orphan has long ceased to be a secret, and your stint in prison is even less of one? Honestly, who in Westmere's elite circles doesn't know you have a criminal record?"
Sally stared at her with a dark expression, remaining silent. She knew that, while these were facts, bringing them up would only end up hurting the child.
Lena continued, "Let's be real. Even if we ignore everything else, you're an ex-con with questionable morals and a devious mind. Is it any wonder those parents don't want their kids anywhere near Lillian? Once a criminal, always a criminal."
As soon as those words were spoken, the atmosphere in the room plunged to freezing point once again.
With a growing crowd of students and teachers already watching, the situation was becoming even more uncontrollable.
"Wait? So it's actually true that Lillian's guardian served time in prison? I always thought that was just a rumor."
"See? I told you it was true, but you never believed me."
"But she doesn't look like a bad person at all—she actually seems really kind."
"Don't judge a book by its cover. Haven't you heard that saying before?"
Sally turned to look around. Clusters of students were whispering among themselves, their hushed conversations buzzing through the crowd.
Standing behind her, Lillian was trembling uncontrollably from sheer anxiety.
Diagnosed with autism, being thrust into a situation like this must have been utterly overwhelming for her. She was absolutely terrified.
"Who dares say Mrs. Zale is devious? To me, she's the most selfless and compassionate person I know." Just as Sally was about to respond, a cold voice cut her off.
All eyes turned toward the source of the voice. The crowd parted, revealing a young couple approaching Sally.
Sally's brows furrowed slightly when she saw the couple. 'They look familiar,' she thought, but she just couldn't quite place them.
"Who the hell are you? Stay out of our business." Lena shot them a contemptuous sidelong glance, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
A woman in her early thirties stepped forward, her voice trembling with emotion. "Miss, you claim Mrs. Zale is devious and immoral, but she's actually the most compassionate doctor I know.
"She once saved my child's life. Without her, my baby wouldn't even be here today."
Staring at her face, Sally finally remembered who they were.
Last month, while dropping Lillian off at daycare, Sally happened to witness a child suddenly go into cardiac arrest. The child's parents stood by, frantic with worry, anxiously waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
After learning more, Sally discovered the child had a congenital heart condition. She dashed over, quickly assessed the child's condition, and performed CPR.
Thanks to her persistence and quick action, Sally managed to stabilize the child until the paramedics arrived.
The paramedics later confirmed that without her immediate intervention, the child probably wouldn't have made it.
After searching high and low for Sally, the parents learned she owned the clinic and came to thank her in person. The mother threw her arms around Sally and sobbed, "If it weren't for you, my child wouldn't be alive today."
The child underwent heart surgery about two weeks ago and had now stabilized. Today marked the kid's first day back at school.
