"Excuse me, miss. If Mrs. Zale is truly as wicked and immoral as you claim, then why would she have saved my child?" The woman shot Lena a frosty look, her voice rising sharply.
Her husband, standing beside her, softly chimed in, "Exactly. Not everyone who's been to prison is a bad person. Some might have been wrongfully convicted. And who can say that everyone walking free is truly good and never does anything wrong?"
As soon as those words were spoken, Lena's lashes kept fluttering. Visible tension instantly spread across her face and lingered for a long moment.
Sally stared at the couple before her, somewhat shocked—their words resonated deeply with her.
'How ironic,' Sally thought. 'Complete strangers are willing to stand up for me, yet my husband and son betrayed me, sending me to prison for Lena. It's beyond ridiculous.'
The couple sighed and continued, "It's heartbreaking enough that the child has lost her parents. That's no excuse for you to bully her behind her back.
"Put yourselves in her shoes. If something like this happened to you and everyone started judging and gossiping about you, how would you feel? People always say that students at this school are smart, but your actions right now are truly disheartening."
At these words, the surrounding students fell into a heavy silence.
Nick glanced around. Seeing everyone suddenly taking Lillian's side, his temper flared up instantly.
"Nick," Sally said, "I'm not asking for much. Just apologize to Lillian face-to-face, and we'll consider this matter settled."
Noticing the shift in Nick's expression, Sally focused her full attention on him.
Nick's eyes widened in disbelief as he looked up at his mother, his voice thick with shock. "What did you just say? You want me to apologize to Lillian? Why on earth should I? This wasn't even my fault—"
"Don't you know perfectly well whether you did this or not? You might be able to fool everyone else, but you can't fool me." Before Nick could finish, Sally cut him off sharply.
Nick lifted his gaze and locked eyes with his mother. For the first time, he saw in her eyes a steely resolve and cold, unyielding determination.
Sally had never been this hard on him before. This was the first time. Nick fumed. This was just too much for him to swallow.
Nick suddenly blurted out, "So what if I did it? I'm just telling it like it is. She's an orphan, and you really have been to prison."
Beside him, Lena's pupils dilated in shock as she looked down at the boy in disbelief. Without thinking, she clamped her hand over Nick's mouth. Only then did Nick realize how outrageous his words were.
The room instantly erupted in uproar.
"So he was the one who spread the rumors."
"I mean, it's about his mom. It's his family business. Who else could it be?"
"How cruel. So young and already so twisted."
"We should stay away from classmates like him."
Nick was surrounded by a flood of condemning whispers, all directed at him. In an instant, he felt like he was falling apart. Never in his wildest dreams did he expect things to flip so drastically, and all in such a short time.
"Guys, please quiet down for a moment." Sally quickly raised her hand and waved for quiet. "Nick is indeed my son. He spread those rumors probably out of resentment toward me. Please cut him some slack and drop the matter."
"Let's not talk about this anymore. Then have Nick apologize to Lillian, and we'll drop it. No more talking about this after today." Just then, a voice suddenly rang out from the crowd.
The rest of the students immediately joined in, all demanding Nick's apology.
Lena instinctively removed her hand from Nick's mouth, momentarily unsure of what to do.
Nick, his eyes rimmed red, looked up at Lena beside him, silently pleading for her to speak. But she remained completely silent.
Sally watched the helpless Nick in silence, her gaze growing colder by the second.
In the past, she would have softened at his distress, but now, not a trace of compassion remained.
Seeing that Nick remained silent, Sally said in a quiet but firm voice, "Nick, didn't you hear what everyone is saying?"
At his mother's words, Nick quickly averted his gaze before looking up at Sally across from him.
His hands at his sides involuntarily clenched into tight fists for a brief moment. Nick fumed inwardly, "I can't believe Mom's actually making me apologize to Lillian in front of everyone. This is so messed up."
"Who's actually your real child? Why do you always side with Lillian but never stand up for me?" Nick glared at Sally, his body still trembling with frustration.
Sally shot Nick an even colder glare when she saw he still showed no remorse. "You made the mistake yourself. Why should anyone cover for you? Don't you see how ridiculous that is? Apologize to Lillian right now, and this will be over."
Her voice rose, sharp and commanding, making Nick freeze in place, completely stunned by her words. He'd never seen his mother this angry before.
Sally stepped aside, reached behind her, and pulled Lillian forward.
Nick clenched his teeth at the sight and finally forced out to Lillian, "Sorry."
Lillian murmured softly, "I forgive you."
The farce gradually drew to a close, and the crowd at the scene slowly began to disperse.
After thanking the couple, Sally led Lillian back to the classroom.
Nick watched them walk away, his eyes burning with angry tears.
Lena instinctively reached out and stroked Nick's hair. "I'm sorry, Nick. I just wanted to help you put Lillian in her place, but I never expected things would spiral out of control like this."
Just then, a deep voice spoke near Nick's ear.
Nick shook his head with a pout. "Lena, this isn't your fault at all. You were just helping me plan things out. I was the one who actually did it, and I messed up by not handling it right."
"There, there. Don't be sad, Nick, okay? Next time, I will stand up for you and teach Lillian a lesson." Just then, a deep voice spoke near Nick's ear.
Nick had been seething with anger, but Lena's words slowly soothed his frayed nerves. He gave a small nod. "Okay."
