Sally turned at the sound, instantly locking eyes with Jaxon.
His deep, inscrutable gaze left Sally feeling puzzled, like she couldn't quite read him.
But Sally knew what was going through Jaxon's mind perfectly well.
She just signed the papers tonight, and with a thirty-day waiting period ahead, who knew if Brad would cause more trouble? She couldn't make any promises to anyone right now, not even to Jaxon.
"I'm not sure what you mean," Sally said, quickly averting her gaze, determined to brush off the topic entirely. "It's getting late, Mr. Zale. If there's nothing else, you should leave now. Lillian and Abigail will be back soon..."
"Actually, I haven't seen Lillian in ages. I'll stick around till she gets back," Jaxon said, leaning in. He rested his hand on Sally's waist and pulled her closer. "Ms. Smith, are you trying to change the subject? Or are you just scared to talk about our feelings?"
'Scared? I simply didn't have the guts to talk to him at all.
'Because Jaxon's mind is unfathomably deep, even now, I still can't see through his true intentions.
'How can I possibly let my guard down and talk to him about my feelings?' Sally thought to herself.
"You're overthinking it," Sally replied.
Sally instinctively raised her hand, pressing it against Jaxon's chest in an attempt to push him away.
But Jaxon seized the moment and grasped her wrist with one hand.
Jaxon narrowed his eyes, his gaze chillingly cold. "When you were still married, I had no right to make demands of you. But now that the papers are signed, what are you still hesitating for? Don't tell me you actually love Finn..."
Before he could finish speaking, the sound of tires crunching on the pavement came from outside.
Sally's heart suddenly jumped into her throat.
She looked up in disbelief, eyes wide as she stared toward the door.
'Didn't Finn say he wouldn't be back tonight? Why is he suddenly here?' she thought, panic rising within her.
"Speak of the devil... I guess thinking about someone really does make them appear." Jaxon's lips curved into a dangerously captivating smile.
"Let go of me. Finn can't see us like this," Sally pleaded anxiously.
Sally mustered all her strength to struggle, but Jaxon's grip around her waist only tightened, making it clear he had no intention of letting her go.
"So what if he sees us?" Jaxon said calmly. "We've been keeping this thing between us in the shadows for too long. It's time to bring it out into the light."
His words instantly sent Sally's mind reeling in utter chaos.
Although Finn had probably already guessed about them, he'd warned her just how dangerous this was. If he ever walked in on something he shouldn't see, she knew he'd be absolutely furious.
"We must not be seen by anyone right now, not even Finn," Sally warned, her tone steely. "If you insist, then starting tomorrow, don't bother coming to see me anymore..."
Her voice took on a steely edge he'd never heard before.
The footsteps outside grew louder and nearer.
She could even hear the distinct jingle of Finn fishing out his keys.
In a flash, Jaxon's large hand scooped Sally up in his arms and he swiftly made his way to the first-floor bathroom.
As the front door started to creak open, he slammed the bathroom door shut behind them and locked it firmly.
The door slammed shut with a loud bang that echoed through the entire space.
Jaxon scooped Sally onto the bathroom counter, planting his hands firmly on either side of her. With a dark expression, he leaned in and demanded, "Ms. Smith, was that a threat?"
"Yes," said Sally firmly.
Hardly had Sally finished speaking when Finn's familiar voice called from the living room. "Sally? Sally..."
Jaxon pried her legs apart with force and then leaned in close to her ear, his voice laced with danger. "Ms. Smith, have I been too good to you? Now you even dare to threaten me?"
"Sally?" Finn called.
Sally swallowed hard, anxiety tightening her throat.
Without missing a beat, she called out toward the door, "Finn, I'm in the bathroom."
As her words faded, an aura of lethal intensity radiated from Jaxon once more. He said, "But what can I do? It's like I'm under your spell. Whatever you say, I have to do. How ironic..."
Sally thought, 'So is he practically confessing he's fallen for me?
'Well, he's not wrong about that.
'Since we met, Jaxon has always treated me with respect and has hardly ever done anything to go against me.
'If we really did have a future together, maybe Jaxon would make a good husband.
'But that's just wishful thinking...'
"Sally, have you had dinner? I brought back some of your favorite dishes and left them on the table. If you get hungry later, just help yourself," said Finn.
Just as Sally was about to respond, Jaxon suddenly lunged forward toward her.
In the next instant, he sank his teeth into her neck with punishing force, as if to punish her.
Startled by the sudden action, Sally gasped sharply in pain.
Yet Jaxon still refused to let her go, and Sally's heart began pounding wildly in her chest.
Even through the door, Finn could sense something was off. Concerned, he called out, "Sally, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Sally's gaze instinctively darted toward the bathroom door.
The frosted glass blurred everything, but with Finn standing so close, she could still make out his silhouette in the glass.
Sally forced herself to stay calm, replying in an even tone, "Finn, I'm fine. I just saw a cockroach. Why are you back so soon? I thought you weren't coming home tonight?"
"The elderly patient's condition has improved a lot after taking the medicine, so I don't need to keep vigil tonight," Finn said in a gentle voice. "When you come out later, remember to eat something, okay? I'm going upstairs to take a shower."
"Okay," Sally said.
It wasn't until the footsteps faded into the distance that the tension in Sally's chest finally began to ease.
Not until Finn had completely gone upstairs did Sally finally press her hands against Jaxon's chest.
After being interrupted, Jaxon lowered his gaze and fixed Sally with a quiet, intense look. "Even now, Ms. Smith, you can still laugh and chat with Finn. Your nerves are really something else."
"Did you do that on purpose?" Sally fixed him with a steely glare, her eyes glinting with chilling intensity.
"Just a spur-of-the-moment thing." Jaxon curved his lips in a faint smirk. "Are you not happy with that?"
Sally's tone was ice-cold. "Never again."
