By the time Jaxon left, it was already 11 p.m.
Brad was just about to take a shower when his phone, lying on the desk, suddenly rang.
Brad glanced down at the caller ID. It was a call from his assistant, Nathan.
Brad answered the call with a darkened face. "What is it?"
"Mr. Zale, regarding the prison investigation you assigned me last time, I've conducted a more thorough follow-up and discovered there might be a new development in this case."
"A new development?" Brad looked perplexed. "What do you mean by that?"
"According to our inside contact, Ms. Smith got beaten up in prison because she was way too reckless, constantly picking fights with others and even pulling some outrageous stunts. That's why they saw her as a thorn in their side..."
At these words, Brad's grip on the phone tightened involuntarily.
He sneered in his heart, 'I knew it. With a woman like Sally, there's no way she'd ever stay out of trouble. She got exactly what she deserved.'
"What exactly did she do? Can you get me the details?" Brad stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, his sharp features reflected in the glass. He exuded an almost tangible air of menace.
"Rumor has it she abused her medical skills to make a female inmate seriously ill. The woman nearly died from it. I also heard she tampered with other inmates' food, leaving them with diarrhea for days..."
Nathan's voice was hesitant, a hint of discomfort in his tone. "There are still a lot of details, but I'm afraid I can't discuss them over the phone."
At these words, Brad's face darkened to its limit. "Fine. Understood."
After hanging up, Brad hurled his phone onto the desk, his chest heaving with barely contained rage.
He thought in anger, 'Sally put on such a show in front of Grandpa, wrapping him around her finger. She almost swindled me out of billions in family assets.
'I never imagined she'd still be the same scheming bitch behind everyone's back.
'What a joke! I've never met anyone more two-faced than her.'
Early in the morning, Sally had just arrived at the clinic when a familiar figure strode in.
Sally frowned, "What brings you here at this hour?"
"This is the only time I'm free. And your clinic is least crowded now. It's perfect for our talk." Brad shot her an icy glare before striding purposefully toward the lounge.
Sally looked up at the front desk. "Carlos, if any patients come in, please handle them first. Just call me if you need me."
Carlos nodded. "Got it, Sally."
Sally hurried to the lounge and pushed open the door.
After they were seated across from each other on the couch, Brad finally spoke up, "What on earth was so urgent that you came to me in such a hurry last night?"
Sally didn't mince her words. "After Nick apologized to Lillian at school last time, I thought he'd stop. But Lillian told me recently he's still trying to trip her up there. Things have gotten better, but..."
Before she could finish, Brad cut her off sharply, "So you're telling me all this just so I'll go home and discipline Nick? To make him stop bullying Lillian?"
Sally nodded gently. "I know you're busy, but you can't let up on parenting, especially with Lena around. You really need to be extra vigilant. Otherwise, if Nick ends up going down the wrong path, you'll be the one to regret it."
"What do you mean by that? Criticizing our son is bad enough, but now you're insinuating that Lena is as vicious as you are?" Brad raised his voice sharply, the ice in his gaze intensifying.
At this, Sally looked up at Brad in disbelief, her eyes widening. "Me, vicious? When have you ever seen me act that way?"
"Drop the act. Maybe Grandpa still falls for your little act, but after all these years of sharing a bed, don't you think I know exactly who you are?" Brad's tone dripped with sarcasm as he fixed her with an icy stare.
Sally couldn't help but sneer, "If you really knew me, you wouldn't say such things."
Her greatest regret was falling in love with him and choosing to marry him.
If she hadn't, she never would've ended up behind bars, let alone nearly died in prison.
Brad snapped, "I've heard every single thing you did in prison. So don't you dare try to pin any of that on me, or go stirring up trouble in front of Grandpa. I'm not taking the fall for your mess. Got it?"
Brad's voice was ice-cold, sending chills down Sally's spine like never before.
At this point, Sally gradually realized that it must have been the prison staff who twisted the truth.
Brad had told her before that he had sent someone to pull some strings, just so she wouldn't have such a hard time in there.
The people he paid off probably lied to him because they were afraid they'd have to cough up the money.
Only Sally knew the real truth.
After all, everything she'd been through had left indelible marks on her. It was scars that would never heal and wounds she dared not revisit.
"Are you even listening to me?" Brad snapped.
Just then, Brad's voice cut through her thoughts.
Hearing this, Sally looked up and fixed Brad with an indifferent glare.
Sally said coldly, "If you've got nothing else to say, just go. We're divorced now. Let's stay out of each other's way as much as possible..."
"Do you really think I'd want anything to do with you?" Brad fumed. "Just keep in mind that in the divorce settlement, it was you who willingly gave up all financial claims. Don't you dare bring this up to me again, and don't you dare spread any nonsense in front of Grandpa."
"Rest assured, Mr. Zale. I couldn't care less about your lousy money," said Sally.
"You!" Brad choked on his words, momentarily speechless, not knowing how to respond.
"Patients will be arriving soon. If there's nothing else, you should leave now," Sally said coldly, gesturing toward the door.
Sally pointed firmly toward the door, her stance making it clear this conversation was over.
Brad shot her one last contemptuous glance. Then he turned around and strode out without another word.
Sally watched his retreating back, a chill glinting in her eyes.
Just then, her phone buzzed on the desk.
She glanced down at her phone and saw Abigail's call.
Sally answered without hesitation, putting the phone to her ear. "Abigail, what's up?"
"Sally, Lena just called again. She wants to know when you'll have that antique vase restored," said Abigail.
