For a split second, Sally's heart sank.
Brad had just stormed out, and before Sally could even cool down, Abigail suddenly called to nag about the vase. The fury inside her flared up.
Sally's face darkened. "Tell her this for me. If she keeps nagging, I'll just give her back the half-fixed vase and she won't get a penny back."
"Okay," Abigail replied. Then she asked tentatively, "Was it Lena messing with you again, or did Brad pester you?"
"Stop bringing up that jerk around me. It pissed me off." Sally's chest heaved with barely contained rage.
At this rate, she didn't even want to restore his damn vase anymore.
Abigail teased, "What did that jerk do to piss you off this time? Shall we prepare a sack and teach him a lesson? We could ambush him tonight and beat him up."
Sally had been fuming, but as soon as she heard Abigail's ridiculous remark, all her anger instantly melted away.
Hearing Sally laugh, Abigail gradually relaxed. "Alright. Whatever happened, don't stoop to his level. But if you get mad again, I might actually go get that sack ready..."
After calming down a bit, Sally said flatly, "The antique vase will probably take about six more days. Just tell her that."
"Okay." Abigail nodded.
Just as Sally hung up, a patient walked in.
Sally tossed aside her phone, swung the door open, and stepped out for preparation.
Sally thought, 'Men will always let me down. The only one I can truly count on is myself.
'Only through hard work can I build a better future for myself.'
It was at Windmere Estates in the evening.
The clinic wasn't busy today, so Sally left early to pick up Lillian from school.
Just as Sally reached her doorstep, she froze. A painfully familiar figure stood waiting by the front gate.
The moment Sally saw who it was, her mood instantly plummeted.
It was her aunt, Nancy Smith.
"Oh my, when did you have a daughter? How come I never heard about this?" The well-dressed Nancy standing at the door glided toward them, her face wearing an insincere smile.
She wore a flowing white gown, her hair elegantly pinned up. Every smile and glance of hers oozed sycophantic charm.
But only Sally knew the truth about Nancy. She was all about putting on a show. Beneath that perfectly crafted smile lurked a vicious heart.
After Sally's grandpa, Evan Smith, passed away, Nancy seized Willow Haven, the home he meant for Sally, and refused to return it to her ever since.
Willow Haven was Evan's sole legacy to her, the place where she'd grown up, and to which she had a deep emotional attachment.
As Nancy came up to them, she reached out as if to touch Lillian's cheek.
Lillian instinctively recoiled, dodging her outstretched hand.
"Aunt Nancy, keep your hands to yourself." Sally's expression instantly turned glacial as she yanked Lillian behind her, shielding the girl with her own body.
"Sally, it's been ages since we last saw each other, not since you went to prison. Why are you acting so distant with me?" Nancy mumbled under her breath, her saccharine smile barely concealing her irritation.
Sally lost her parents at a young age, so Evan raised her on his own. That was why they shared such a special bond.
Evan only had two sons, her father and her uncle, Zayne Smith.
Although Zayne's family also lived in Westmere, they resided in the eastern district, a two-hour round-trip drive away. Because of the distance, they rarely saw each other, so they never grew close.
There was another major reason she kept her distance from them. Zayne's family were hypocrites, all smiles on the outside but scheming behind the scenes.
They were all smiles to her, but they stabbed her in the back.
These were exactly the kind of people she loathed the most.
Nancy asked, "Where on earth did you get this kid? She can't be your and Brad's biological daughter, right? She doesn't look anything like either of you."
"Aunt Nancy, is there something urgent you need to see me about today?" Sally asked coolly.
No sooner had Sally finished speaking than Nancy hemmed and hawed, "It's nothing urgent..."
"Well, if there's nothing important, I'll take Lillian home now. She hasn't had dinner yet, and I need to make her dinner." Sally brushed past Nancy, her expression utterly indifferent.
Just as Sally was about to step inside, Nancy's voice rang out from behind. "Sally."
Sally had no choice but to stop in her tracks. She shot Nancy a sidelong, icy glance, her voice low and cold. "Is there something else?"
"Actually, Zayne and I are planning to move into Willow Haven," Nancy said, hurriedly stepping forward and grabbing Sally's hand. "It's closer to your place, so we can look out for each other. After all, we're family..."
Nancy gave Sally's hand a gentle pat, her eyes glinting with hidden schemes.
The mere mention of Willow Haven made Sally's blood boil.
Before Evan passed away, he hadn't had time to make a will. As a result, almost all of his assets were snatched up by Zayne and Nancy.
Willow Haven was the home Evan promised Sally with his dying breath. But after he passed away, the house was snatched up and registered under Nancy's name.
All these years, no matter what she tried, Willow Haven remained beyond her reach.
Without any written proof, Sally had no solid evidence to support her claim. To make matters worse, Willow Haven had already been legally transferred to Nancy's name.
Now, reclaiming it would be an even steeper uphill battle, which was exactly why she had wanted to collaborate with Jaxon in the first place.
"Sally, you also know that Zayne's business has been tanking for years. We had to sell off a bunch of properties except Willow Haven just to make ends meet. Now it's the only home we have left, so we really have no choice but to move in. I hope you get it..."
Sally sneered, "You knew perfectly well that Grandpa said he'd leave Willow Haven to me on his deathbed. But you took advantage of me being just a kid and snatched it away. After all these years, has your conscience ever kept you up at night?"
With those words, Nancy's expression changed dramatically.
Nancy put on a wounded expression. "Sally, that's completely uncalled for. After your grandpa passed away and before you married Brad, you lived with us for a while and we treated you decently, didn't we?
"Isn't your house essentially our house too? After all, we're family. Why split things up so clearly? Besides, you already live in a massive place like Windmere Estates. What more could you possibly want? Why are you trying to snatch this house from us?"
Sally's presence turned terrifyingly cold as she snapped, "Even now, you still don't get what really matters to me? Do you honestly think all I care about is just a house?"
