Nancy was rendered speechless by Sally's furious outburst, her words caught in her throat.
Just as Nancy was about to respond, a deep voice cut her off. "Mrs. Smith, what brings you here?"
At those words, both Sally and Nancy turned toward the voice, only to spot Finn closing in fast.
The instant Sally saw Finn, her emotions finally broke free. Her longing for Evan overwhelmed her, reaching its peak.
Tears sprang to her eyes. She spun around and hastily wiped them away.
Both Finn and Lillian looked at her, a trace of worry appearing in their eyes.
"Sally, are you okay?" asked Lillian.
Sally instinctively shook her head, forcing a gentle smile so Lillian wouldn't worry. "Don't worry, sweetie. I'm fine..."
Finn caught the choked-up tone in her voice and shot Nancy a sharp look. "Mrs. Smith, were you bullying Sally while I was gone?"
"I swear! I just came to check on Sally. How could I possibly be bullying her?" Nancy said.
Finn had always known about Sally's strained relationship with Nancy's family.
Finn was fully aware of the Willow Haven situation. He had tried every means to help Sally reclaim the property, but so far, he hadn't found an effective solution.
"Mrs. Smith, unless you have a good reason, you'd better not come here again. Let Sally have her peace. "With that, Finn swiftly turned, took Sally by the hand, and led her straight into the house.
Nancy watched their retreating figures disappear into the house, a sudden wave of fury surging through her.
Her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, fingernails digging into her palms for a brief moment.
Nancy lowered her voice and said coldly, "Sally, Willow Haven belongs to us. Don't even think about taking it away from us."
Ever since Nancy's visit, Finn could tell that something was off with Sally. She'd been down and distracted all evening, lost in her own thoughts.
After putting Lillian to sleep, Sally settled into the lounge chair on the second-floor balcony, gazing absentmindedly at the moonlight outside.
Autumn had arrived, bringing a slight chill to the air in the early mornings and evenings.
A gust of wind swept through, tousling her long hair and sending a chill through her jacket.
"Aren't you cold sitting out here?" Finn walked over and gently draped a blanket over Sally's shoulders.
Sally's drifting thoughts snapped back.
Looking down at the blanket Finn had draped over her, Sally was suddenly reminded of Evan.
Back when she used to sit in the lounge chair at Willow Haven, Evan would always tuck a blanket around her just like now, chatting idly with her.
After all, Finn was Evan's student. No wonder they shared some of the same habits.
But those ordinary days had now become a happiness forever out of her reach.
"Finn, do you ever miss Grandpa?" Sally lifted her gaze to the night sky, her voice growing even more subdued, heavy with emotion.
Finn froze for a moment after hearing her words.
Finn remembered how, whenever Sally missed Evan, she'd quietly gaze up at the night sky.
Ever since Evan passed away, Finn often found himself dreaming about him. How could he not miss Evan?
Finn asked gently, "Did your aunt's visit today stir up some memories and make you miss Evan?"
Finn's voice held a tentative note as he spoke near her ear, and at his words, her eyelashes gave the slightest tremble.
Sally gave a slight nod, her voice barely above a whisper. "I guess so."
But deep down, what hurt Sally the most was knowing she couldn't protect Willow Haven, the home Evan had left her.
Suddenly, Finn leaned in. Acting on instinct, he reached out and gently grasped Sally's arm, then, without hesitation, pulled her into his embrace.
The sudden embrace made Sally's heart skip a beat. The rush of emotions that washed over her was simply beyond words.
It wasn't the first time Finn had hugged Sally, so she didn't resist.
After Evan passed away, Finn stayed by her side the whole time. Whenever she broke down in tears, he would pull her into his arms and comfort her. It always made her feel so warm and safe.
But this time, Finn hugged Sally tighter than ever and whispered, "I'll probably have to go back to Freymoor in a couple of days. Now that your aunt and uncle have shown up at a time like this, I just can't help worrying about you..."
Sally reached out and gently pushed him away. "It's okay, Finn. Go if you need to. Don't worry about me. I can handle everything on my own."
Finn said, "I don't know when I'll be able to come back this time. You must take good care of yourself. If anything happens, tell me right away. Got it?"
He reached out and softly placed his well-defined hand on the back of Sally's head, gently running his fingers through her hair.
Sally suddenly looked up. When their eyes met, she caught the deep, lingering reluctance in Finn's gaze.
Sally finally gave Finn a gentle nod. "Alright. Got it."
Finn lowered his gaze, a wave of sorrow welling in his eyes.
Actually, the real reason he was in such a hurry to leave was that he'd become acutely aware of the profound shift in his feelings during his time with her.
Finn could feel his feelings for Sally spiraling out of control, yet he knew her heart wasn't with him. There could never be a future for them.
He had to nip these budding feelings in the bud before they grew out of control.
In the end, leaving was the only way out he could see.
Just then, a phone rang, shattering the tense silence between them.
Sally instinctively looked down and immediately saw the caller ID.
It was Jaxon calling.
"Go ahead. I'll take a shower." Finn barely glanced at the caller ID before pushing himself up from the chair.
Sally looked up to see Finn heading for the door, his back unusually forlorn.
She couldn't put that feeling into words.
The phone in her hand kept ringing insistently.
After a brief hesitation, Sally eventually answered the call. "Mr. Zale..."
Jaxon said, "Come downstairs. I'm out front in the car."
Sally instinctively glanced out toward the yard and immediately spotted the Maybach discreetly parked beneath the big tree.
She'd been so engrossed in the night sky that she completely missed the car parked just outside the yard.
"Alright," Sally finally agreed, pocketing her phone as she hurried toward the stairs.
Unbeknownst to her, after Finn returned to his room, he left the lights off and stood motionless behind the curtains, peering out as he watched Sally step by step toward the waiting Maybach.
Only after watching Sally get into the car did Finn finally avert his gaze. He then headed straight for the bathroom.
Inside the Maybach, the moment Sally pulled open the rear door, Jaxon seized her wrist in an iron grip.
In the next instant, Jaxon pulled her into his warm embrace. Before Sally could react, the faint, cool woody scent that clung to him wrapped around her, completely engulfing her senses.
