In an instant, Jaxon's broad hand grasped her slender waist.
Jaxon shot Sally a dark, icy glare that bore down on her. "You were in his arms and you still claim there's nothing between you?"
Sally jerked her head up in disbelief. "How long have you been here?"
"I saw everything between you two on the balcony." Jaxon's grip around Sally's waist tightened relentlessly, his fingers digging in until she felt a sharp twinge of pain.
Sally frowned and stared at Jaxon, her voice heavy with tension. "So what if you saw it? There's nothing between him and me. There's no need for me to explain anything to you."
Jaxon grabbed her chin, making her look at him. "So, Ms. Smith, were you gonna wait till I caught you kissing him or worse before explaining to me? Or do you think that since you haven't given me any official label, you don't owe me an explanation?"
"He's just my senior and he's like family to me," Sally explained, her tone softening as she saw Jaxon's stern expression. "He hugged me because I missed my grandpa. He saw I was upset and just wanted to comfort me. It's not what you think..."
After hearing her explanation, Jaxon loosened his grip on her waist.
His voice softened with cautious concern. "What made you miss your grandpa all of a sudden? Did something happen?"
He could clearly sense that Sally was in low spirits tonight.
Sally pushed gently against Jaxon's chest. "My aunt came by tonight. She's in financial trouble, sold all her other properties, and now she's planning to move into Willow Haven."
At her words, Jaxon's expression tightened, a slight frown flickering across his face.
Willow Haven was the legacy Evan left her. Although it was just a house, it must have meant the world to Sally. Otherwise, she would never have used it as a bargaining chip in her deal with Jaxon.
"Caleb has been eyeing Willow Haven all along. I admit I don't have a solid plan yet, but I'm working on it. Trust me. One day, I'll get it back for you." His voice was so firm that it left no room for doubt.
When Sally turned to look at him, she was met with the unwavering determination burning in Jaxon's eyes.
Even before Sally could speak, Jaxon already knew what she wanted to say.
'Could this be one of those rare moments of unspoken connection between them?' thought Sally.
"Mr. Zale, I know you'll get Willow Haven back for me. Otherwise, I never would've made that deal with you in the first place." Sally stared back at him with equal determination, her voice dropping to a whisper.
Jaxon merely cast a sidelong glance at her before suddenly reaching out to cup her face in his hands.
He drew closer, his voice dark with intent. "Do you know? Every time you look at me like that, it makes me want to do something to you..."
At Jaxon's words, Sally felt her heart leap into her throat.
A sudden wave of unease surged through Sally.
Sally instinctively braced her hands against his chest. "Mr. Zale, what do you want?"
At her words, a faint smirk tugged at the corners of Jaxon's lips. He countered in a low, teasing voice, "What do you think?"
As Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jaxon's eyes, she noticed faint red streaks in them.
Sally wondered, 'Did he not sleep well last night? "Why are his eyes so bloodshot?" Sally wondered.
Jaxon suddenly leaned in, closing the distance between them.
Sally instinctively reached out and pressed her hand against Jaxon's chest, her voice low with concern. "Jaxon, did you stay up all night?"
However, Sally's words abruptly shattered the smoldering desire in Jaxon's eyes.
His eyelids fluttered slightly as he admitted, "Just over two hours, I suppose."
Sally frowned, "Why aren't you getting enough sleep? Have you seen your eyes? They're so bloodshot. You've been staying up way too late. This is really bad for you."
Sally watched him with clear worry, a hint of cool caution flickering in her gaze.
Jaxon said, "There was an issue with a project last night, so I had to rush out to handle it. I didn't get back to the office until 5 AM. I woke up at 7 AM and couldn't fall back asleep."
After letting her go, Jaxon slumped back in his chair with a soft yawn, exhaustion evident on his face.
"Then you should've gone straight home after work. Why did you come all the way here looking for me instead?" Sally's concern deepened visibly.
Jaxon turned to meet her gaze, a lazy smile playing on his lips. "Ms. Smith, are you worried about me?"
Sally's eyelashes fluttered involuntarily, and then, without any apparent reason, her heart began to race.
Even though she was worried about him, she just couldn't bring herself to admit it.
Seeing that Sally stayed silent, Jaxon spoke up again, his voice gentle, "I missed you so much that I just had to come see you. Even though I was exhausted, missing you was even stronger."
His words sent Sally's heart into a fluttering chaos.
For a moment, Sally was at a loss for words.
Jaxon held her gaze, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Ms. Smith, did you miss me?"
Sally instinctively swallowed hard but didn't respond. Instead, she quickly reached for Jaxon's wrist, pulled it onto her lap, and checked on him.
Seeing this, Jaxon couldn't help but chuckle. "Looks like having a doctor at home is actually pretty convenient," he teased. "You can check on me whenever I need..."
At the word "home", her fingers on his pulse froze momentarily.
She and Brad were already divorced. Technically, she was no longer part of the Zale family. Yet he still casually used the word "home".
In that instant, Sally grasped the implication behind his words.
Sally wondered, 'Does he really see me as one of his own now?'
Jaxon asked casually, "Find anything? Just a late night, nothing serious."
Sally paused for a moment and then said sternly, "Stop joking around. I'm seriously checking on you."
Seeing her slightly annoyed look, Jaxon suddenly didn't dare to push his luck any further.
Sally finished checking on Jaxon, her face turning serious. "Jaxon, you're jumpy and can't sleep well. You need some herbs to get better. It seems you stopped your treatment too early last time."
Jaxon said, "I've been swamped lately..."
