Jaxon hadn't even finished speaking when Sally cut him off sharply. "Being busy isn't an excuse. Don't give me that line. You have to take the medicine I prescribed on time. I'll brew it myself. Come pick it up later."
At her words, a faint smirk tugged at the corners of Jaxon's lips.
The moment she loosened her grip, he seized her hand instead. Jaxon said teasingly, "Ms. Smith, you're being so nice to me. People might get the wrong idea."
"The wrong idea?" Sally's brows knitted as she looked at him, clearly puzzled.
Jaxon suddenly leaned in a little closer, locking eyes with her. With a straight face, he said, "People might mistake you for being head over heels for me."
Sally's lashes fluttered wildly again. Her feelings right now were simply indescribable.
Jaxon suddenly reached out, pulling her closer without hesitation. With a lazy grin, he teased, "Ms. Smith, did I guess right?"
His tone was casual, almost nonchalant.
When Sally met Jaxon's gaze again, a faint pang of sympathy tugged at her heart.
'Only two hours of sleep in two days. If it were me, I would've collapsed by now,' she thought.
"Alright, you should go home and get some rest," Sally said. "The herbal medicine won't be ready until tomorrow evening. If you're free then, remember to come pick it up."
Jaxon's voice carried a teasing, testing note. "And what if I'm unavailable? Would you be willing to deliver it to me personally?"
Sally paused briefly and then said calmly, "Let's see how it goes. If you're really tied up, just give me a call. But tonight, go home and get some rest. No more staying up late. Do you hear me?"
Seeing her stern expression, Jaxon grinned and nodded. "Alright, you're the boss."
Sally pushed him away and reached for the car door.
Just as Sally was about to open the car door, Jaxon suddenly reached out from behind and grabbed her wrist.
Sally turned back at the sound, looking at him with a puzzled expression. "Is there anything else?" she asked.
Jaxon jerked his chin toward Windmere Estates. "So, when is he finally moving out? He's been crashing at your place way too long. It's high time he left, right?"
As Sally met his eyes, she felt a subtle, unmistakable hint of jealousy radiating from him.
Sally replied softly, "It'll be soon, probably in the next couple of days."
"Perfect." Jaxon seemed thoroughly pleased with the answer, the corners of his lips curling upward uncontrollably.
Jaxon let go of Sally's hand and gently ruffled her hair. "Go get some rest, okay? Good night."
"Good night." Sally nodded and then decisively stepped out of the car.
Jaxon watched through the backseat window as Sally walked step by step toward her front door.
The satisfied smile on his face lingered, refusing to fade.
Everything was unfolding exactly as he had planned.
The next evening, after Sally finished brewing the herbal medicine, she called Jaxon to let him know it was ready. He regretfully said he was tied up and wouldn't be able to come by until at least after 10 p.m.
Seeing that the clinic wasn't busy, Sally decided to deliver the medicine to Jaxon herself, planning to make it quick.
When Sally arrived at the corporate building, she had planned to call Jaxon and have him send someone down for the medicine. But his phone was off, and she couldn't even get through to Caleb.
After a brief hesitation, Sally grabbed the bag of freshly brewed herbal medicine and headed up to the executive floor.
Just as Sally stepped out of the elevator, her eyes landed on Brad, a familiar figure standing by the doors, clearly waiting to go down.
Brad's eyes widened in surprise when he saw her. "What are you doing here?" he demanded.
Sally's back stiffened instantly.
Since Jaxon and Brad had been collaborating lately, it was only natural for Brad to be here.
Still, Sally never expected to bump right into him like this.
Sally shot Brad a cold glance, her eyes frosting over. "I'm here on my own business," she said icily.
Brad's gaze fell to Sally's hands, immediately spotting the packet of herbal medicine she held.
Besides, this entire floor was Jaxon's office. She was most likely here to see him.
Just as Sally was about to take a step toward Jaxon's office, Brad suddenly grabbed her wrist from the side.
The next instant, Brad yanked her toward the emergency stairwell.
Sally struggled to break free, but against Brad's overwhelming strength, she couldn't escape his grip no matter how hard she tried.
As soon as they reached the stairwell, Brad shoved her hard against the wall.
The impact was so violent that the medicine packets slipped from Sally's hands. All six packets tumbled to the floor, instantly picking up dust.
"Brad, have you lost your damn mind?" Sally glared up at him, her eyes flashing with a ferocity he'd never seen before.
Brad narrowed his eyes. "If I recall correctly, your clinic doesn't provide herbal medicine brewing services. So why is Uncle Jaxon the exception? What gives you the right to bend the rules just for him?"
"He's your uncle, so what if I brew some medicine for him? Haven't I done the same for Howard countless times? How come you never questioned me about making medicine for Howard, but now you have a problem when it's for your uncle?"
The fury blazing in Sally's eyes burned itself deep into Brad's gaze.
His fingers at his sides involuntarily clenched for a brief moment.
Lately, Sally and Jaxon had been getting alarmingly close. His informants reported that Jaxon was often seen at the clinic and at Windmere Estates, looking for her.
At first, he thought their frequent contact was just about Lillian. But after some time observing them, he realized their interactions had clearly crossed all reasonable boundaries.
To put it bluntly, they were acting just like two people carrying on a secret affair.
As soon as those thoughts crossed his mind, his anger flared up even more.
"Look, we're all family. I treat everyone the same, and I don't see anything wrong with that." Sally's voice abruptly cut through his train of thought.
Brad suddenly leaned in closer, his gaze icy as he stared at her. "Sally, Jaxon is my uncle, but he's still a man. You need to stay away from him. Otherwise, people will talk, and you'll end up dragging the Zale family name through the mud."
Sally was already seething, but after hearing Brad's words, her chest heaved with barely contained fury.
"Mr. Zale, haven't you heard the saying?" she said, deliberately provoking him. "Rules for thee, but not for me. You're the living embodiment of that hypocrisy right now."
The moment the words left her mouth, Brad's face darkened instantly.
Brad took a few steps closer, his face full of surprise as he pressed, "Sally, what do you mean by that?"
