Sally said, "I thought you said you didn't have time? My clinic was quiet, so I figured I'd drop by. But when I got downstairs, your phone was off and I couldn't get through to Caleb either, so I had no choice but to bring it up myself."
Carrying six packets of herbal medicine, Sally hurried over to Jaxon's desk.
Jaxon said, "Thanks for bringing this up. I was just in a really important meeting, so I had to turn off my phone. Caleb was in a meeting next door as well."
Jaxon's expression softened slightly, a hint of gentleness flickering across his face.
Sally set the torn bag, along with the herbal medicine, down on Jaxon's desk.
She looked up at Jaxon and asked, "That client you mentioned was Brad?"
Jaxon froze for a beat. "How did you know?"
"I ran into Brad in the stairwell. When he saw me bringing you your medicine, he just wouldn't let it go. He kept pestering me about the herbal medicine service and accused me of playing favorites.
"In the end, he spilled all your herbal medicine on the floor. It got a bit dusty. Hope you don't mind," said Sally.
"How could I possibly mind? This is the herbal medicine you personally brewed for me. I'd finish it no matter what. Besides, it's only the bag that got dirty, not the medicine itself." He gazed at Sally tenderly, his affection unmistakably written across his face.
She was surprised when the word "affection" flashed through her mind.
Jaxon's gaze lingered on her, indeed more affectionate than ever before.
Jaxon swiftly rose from his chair, circled the desk, and stood before her. Instinctively, he reached out and grasped her wrist.
His voice was exceptionally gentle as he asked, "Other than those questions, did Brad give you any trouble?"
As Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jaxon's eyes, she caught a flicker of curiosity in them.
Sally decided to keep her conversation with Brad from Jaxon.
'Better to avoid unnecessary trouble,' she thought to herself.
Sally smiled faintly, "No, of course not. How could he possibly give me trouble? With my personality, do you really think he stands a chance?"
Jaxon's lips curved into a mesmerizing smile. "That's right. If even I can't give you a hard time, then Brad certainly stands no chance..."
Sally's grin deepened, her voice laced with playful nonchalance. "Oh? Are you planning to give me a hard time, Mr. Zale?"
Jaxon chuckled, "Relax, I was just saying. Why so serious?"
She tilted her head up, quietly studying his features without saying a word.
"Look at my eyes. Don't they look much less bloodshot?" Jaxon suddenly leaned in, placing his hands on either side of the chair, trapping her within its confines.
Suddenly, there was barely any space left between them.
His sudden move sent her heart racing out of control.
Sally couldn't help but think, 'This man never fails to make my heart race.
'No one, not even Brad, has ever made me feel this way before.'
Sally instinctively leaned back and gave a slight nod. "The redness has definitely improved. Looks like you actually got some sleep last night. It's good for you."
Jaxon smiled and said, "When you tell me to do something, how could I not listen?"
Sally instinctively lowered her gaze. "I'm not your girlfriend or your wife. You really don't have to take my advice so seriously. I was just offering you a suggestion as your doctor."
Jaxon seemed quite dissatisfied with her response. Suddenly, he reached out, grasped her chin firmly, and tilted her face up to meet his gaze.
He gazed into her eyes, his voice serious. "As long as you want, you can stand by my side as anyone you wish."
These words weren't quite a confession, yet they struck deeper than any declaration of love, sending Sally's heart into complete turmoil.
Sally forced a laugh to ease her tension. "Come on. Don't joke. At most, what we have is just..."
'At most, it was just a fluke that got us tangled up together,' Sally thought.
But she just couldn't bring herself to say the rest.
"Why did you stop?" Jaxon pressed, his voice low and insistent. "What were you going to say?"
Sally instinctively raised her hands to push him away. "It's nothing. It's getting late. I should head back."
The next instant, Jaxon clamped his hands down on her shoulders and firmly pushed her back into the chair.
"Why did you suddenly go quiet?" Jaxon looked at her, puzzled, and then ventured cautiously, "Don't tell me you're about to say we're just a one-night stand?"
Sally paused for a moment and then shook her head. "No."
"So, we're just having an affair... " Jaxon suddenly leaned in close to her ear, his voice barely above a deep whisper, tinged with bitterness. "In your eyes, am I really nothing more than a lover?"
Sally said, "Mr. Zale, you know I just got divorced. I really can't make any promises right now. And honestly, our situation feels too risky... I think maybe we should..."
"What? Trying to ditch me again?" Jaxon suddenly yanked her up from the chair, spun her around, and pinned her against the desk. "Do you really think you can get away from me?"
The reason she was hesitant was because of what Brad had just said. It really got under her skin and left her feeling uneasy.
As expected, Brad would definitely plant more spies around her to uncover the identity of that so-called "toy boy" she mentioned.
Maybe keeping their distance for now was for the best.
Sally looked at Jaxon seriously and said, "Jaxon, I mean it. We need to keep our distance for a while. Don't come to Windmere Estates or my clinic unless it's absolutely necessary. But if it's really urgent, you can call me."
Jaxon asked, "And what if I refuse?"
Sally looked up and was instantly met with the blazing fury in Jaxon's eyes.
She really didn't expect her words would anger him like this.
Sally said, "I'm not saying we should cut contact completely. I just think we should see each other less often. Do you understand what I mean?"
"I just don't get it. Before your divorce, we never had to keep our distance. Now that you've both signed the papers, you're suddenly telling me to stay away? Don't you realize how ridiculous that sounds?"
Sally was momentarily speechless. He was right.
But if she told Jaxon everything Brad said to her today, he would definitely take action. This wasn't the outcome she wanted to see.
"What exactly are you hiding from me? Or have you found someone else and are just trying to ditch me?" Jaxon's icy gaze bore down on her, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl.
Sally said, "No, you've got it all wrong..."
Before Sally could finish her sentence, Jaxon suddenly crushed his lips against hers in a fierce, possessive kiss.
Sally's eyes flew wide in shock, disbelief flooding her gaze.
Footsteps echoed outside the door, but thankfully, they weren't headed their way.
With people coming and going outside, it would be highly inappropriate if anything intimate were to happen here in the office.
