Besides, this was his office. His assistant or senior executives could walk in at any moment.
"Jaxon, this is your office. Stop messing around," Sally whispered. She pulled away from his kiss, a flicker of nervousness in her eyes.
Jaxon leaned closer, his voice tinged with danger. "Perfect. We've never had sex here before. Honestly, it hadn't even crossed my mind until you mentioned it, Ms. Smith."
'I shouldn't have said those words to him,' Sally thought. But now, it was already far too late.
Jaxon swept Sally up into his arms without a moment's hesitation and strode toward the lounge.
Bang. He slammed the door shut behind them and, with a decisive click, locked it from the inside.
Sally's heart leapt to her throat. "Jaxon, don't do anything crazy," she pleaded, her voice trembling.
Jaxon unceremoniously tossed Sally onto the couch and pinned her down in an instant.
This was the top floor, where the dusk-tinged cityscape unfolded beyond the uncovered floor-to-ceiling windows. The fading glow of sunset gradually dimmed, painting faint silhouettes across the expansive glass panes and onto the polished floor.
Sally's resistance crumbled in a mere thirty seconds. At that moment, she let herself be completely swept away by Jaxon, all rationality abandoned.
"Sally, you've already signed the papers. Isn't it time you consider me?" Jaxon leaned in and murmured intimately in her ear, "It truly breaks my heart every time we're together like this—in this sneaky, under-the-radar relationship that can't see the light of day."
Sally gazed at him, her eyes clouded with confusion and longing, completely at a loss for words.
"Say something," he said. Jaxon's grip on her chin tightened, his fingers pressing harder against her jawline.
Sally looked at Jaxon. "What do you want from me? Haven't we been lovers all this time? What more could you possibly want?"
"That's never what I wanted," Jaxon murmured, lowering his head to kiss her forehead. "What I want is legitimate recognition, the right to stand by your side as your man."
Sally's breathing grew deeper. After a moment's hesitation, she gritted her teeth and finally spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "At least, wait until I get all the paperwork done."
A tinge of forlornness flickered in Jaxon's eyes. "Why can't it be now?"
Sally looked at Jaxon, her voice laced with sarcasm. "Mr. Zale, haven't you always done whatever you pleased with me? It's just a title. How is this any different from now?"
Jaxon was momentarily at a loss for words. He wondered, 'Apparently, she really has no idea what I actually want from her. Well, forget it. Pushing her too hard won't get me anywhere. If that actually worked, I'd already be standing by her side as her husband.'
"Fine, I'll wait for you." Jaxon kissed her lips once more, his eyes burning with barely restrained desire.
Yet even though they were already intimately entwined, he abruptly pulled back and tenderly adjusted her clothes. Sally was momentarily stunned, caught off guard by his unexpected reaction.
Something suddenly flashed through Sally's mind. 'Infatuation seeks possession, but true love demands restraint,' she wondered. She could clearly see that fierce self-control burning in Jaxon's eyes.
Just then, there was a sudden knock at the door, followed by Kendall's urgent voice calling out, "Jaxon? Jaxon—"
Sally's eyes widened in shock the moment she heard the voice. She looked up at Jaxon in disbelief. "Why is Kendall here?"
Jaxon looked just as confused. "I have no idea either. I didn't invite her so stop looking at me like that."
Sally couldn't help but feel both amused and exasperated as she watched Jaxon scramble to distance himself from Kendall.
Jaxon swiftly buttoned up his white shirt and rose from the couch without hesitation. Turning to Sally, he said firmly, "Stay put and don't come out yet. I'll handle this."
Just then, the footsteps outside grew louder, drawing closer, heading straight for the lounge.
Instinctively, Sally reached out and tugged at Jaxon's arm. "Jaxon, did she come over to the lounge?"
"It's okay. Don't be scared. I've got you." Jaxon soothed her gently, his face full of tenderness.
As Jaxon turned away, Sally suddenly spotted a faint lipstick mark on his collar.
'That must be from just now. I must have left it there during our intimate moment without even realizing,' she thought.
She was about to call out to him, but Jaxon had already strode away toward the door before she could say a word. Left with no choice, she closed her mouth and lay back on the couch, letting out a silent sigh.
As the door swung open, Jaxon immediately spotted Kendall standing outside. She held a lunchbox in one hand, her other hand raised mid-air, clearly about to knock.
Jaxon cast a cold glance at her. "Why did you show up unannounced?"
Kendall sized him up in an instant—her eyes immediately catching the lipstick stain on his collar. A faint herbal aroma wafted from Jaxon.
Kendall recognized it instantly, the distinctive scent that clings to those who spend long hours in the clinic.
'Could Sally be in there?' The moment this thought popped into Kendall's head, her pupils dilated in shock.
Just as Kendall leaned in to peek inside, Jaxon swiftly pulled the door shut behind him.
Left with no choice, Kendall stepped aside and briskly walked to his desk, placing the lunchbox on its polished surface.
Suppressing her shock and anger, Kendall forced a gentle tone and replied softly, "It's been a while since we last met. Since I had some free time, I made you a lunchbox. Try it and see if you like it."
Jaxon could easily tell something was off about Kendall. In a probing tone, he asked, "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Kendall's thoughts immediately raced to the closed door.
Jaxon waved his hand before Kendall's eyes, snapping her out of her daze. "No," she replied hastily.
"I have work to attend to tonight. If there's nothing urgent, you should head back now. Thanks for the meal," said Jaxon, his tone polite yet distant.
To Kendall's utter dismay, she had just arrived, and Jaxon was already trying to send her away.
"Jaxon, there's something I need to ask you," Kendall said. His tone turned serious, a frosty glint flashing in her eyes.
Jaxon looked up at her. "Go ahead. Say it."
Kendall glared at him and demanded, "Do you have an affair?"
Jaxon hadn't expected her to be so blunt. His eyebrows arched slightly in surprise.
Kendall saw his stunned expression and instantly understood everything. "Answer me, Jaxon. Do you?" Kendall pressed on, her voice trembling with barely contained fury.
"Sort of but not exactly." Jaxon produced a cigarette and placed it between his lips.
Kendall stared at him in disbelief. "What kind of answer is that? It's either yes or no—what do you mean? Sort of but not exactly?"
"Kendall, we've been friends for years, but don't pry into my private matters unless I choose to share them. Understood?" Jaxon snapped.
"Jaxon, this is your office. Stop messing around," Sally whispered. She pulled away from his kiss, a flicker of nervousness in her eyes.
