Kendall was slightly taken aback when she saw the indifference in Jaxon's eyes. She forced down her anger and said bluntly, "Jaxon, when did things get so distant between us?"
Jaxon pulled out his lighter and lit the cigarette dangling from his lips.
After exhaling a puff of smoke, Jaxon said casually, "Kendall, you should know your boundaries, especially when it comes to relationships. I don't appreciate people prying into my love life. I'm sure you're well aware of that."
"I have one last question." Kendall suddenly raised her voice.
A cold glint flashed in the upturned corners of Jaxon's eyes. When their eyes met, Jaxon caught a faint trace of melancholy in Kendall's gaze. After a brief pause, Jaxon finally said, "Ask."
"Is that woman with you Sally?" Kendall kept her eyes fixed on Jaxon's face, searching for any tell that might betray his true feelings.
But to her dismay, Jaxon didn't even bat an eye, leaving her completely unable to detect any clues.
Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette, crossing his long legs, his tone casual and dismissive. "So what if it is? So what if it isn't? It's none of your business anyway."
Upon hearing his words, Kendall's hands clenched into fists at her sides. She was unable to control her anger. Jaxon had never been this secretive with her before.
He neither denied nor confirmed it. Kendall was so lost right now. She just couldn't figure out if there was actually something romantic going on between them or not.
Jaxon said, "Look. We grew up together and, sure, we've always been close. But I made it clear to you a long time ago. I just don't have feelings for you."
Those words didn't just reach Kendall's ears—they landed on Sally's as well. All of Sally's suspicions were finally confirmed at that moment. 'So there really was nothing between them,' Sally thought.
Sally leaned against the door, the corners of her lips curling up in an involuntary smile that grew wider by the second. Her happiness was bubbling up inside her, impossible to contain.
Where some rejoiced, others inevitably felt sorrow. However, Kendall's face darkened to the extreme, her eyes wide with sheer shock. Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined he would crush all her hopes yet again.
'The last time he turned me down was before he got married. Who would've thought that even after his divorce, I'd still end up in exactly the same place? It's so pathetic,' Kendall thought.
The moment it flashed through her mind, even Kendall herself found it laughable.
"All these years, I've never been able to let you go. I really thought that after we met again, I might still have a chance. But you just shut me down without a second thought," she said.
Kendall's lips curled into a mocking smile, bitter self-mockery flickering in her eyes. But as Kendall kept forcing a smile, she couldn't stop her eyes from welling up with tears.
Kendall looked at Jaxon, her eyes burning with bitter resentment. "Tell me, Jaxon. What's wrong with me? What is it about me that you don't like? Whether it's my personality or my fashion sense, just say it. I can change for you, as long as you—"
Before she could finish, Jaxon cut her off, his voice calm but firm. "Kendall, you're a great person, but I just can't fall for you. If I could, why would I have let you wait all these years?"
Kendall felt his words stab into her heart like a blade, leaving her breathless with agony.
"Even before I met someone I liked, there was never a chance for us. Now that I have feelings for someone else, any possibility between us is completely out of the question." Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette, his tone turning icily detached.
Large teardrops instantly welled up and spilled from Kendall's eyes. She suddenly burst into a mix of laughter and tears, her expression growing increasingly hysterical.
Jaxon hadn't expected her sudden emotional outburst. Stubbing out his cigarette, he immediately stood up from his chair.
Without hesitation, Kendall flung herself at Jaxon, her hands locking tightly around his waist. The sudden embrace caught Jaxon off guard for a split second.
To prevent a repeat of last time's misunderstanding, Jaxon swiftly pried Kendall's hands off his waist and stepped back, putting deliberate distance between them.
Jaxon looked down at her, his expression stern. "Kendall, please don't do something so impulsive again. I don't want any unnecessary misunderstandings between us."
After hearing Jaxon's words, Kendall gradually calmed down a little.
"So?" She twisted her lips into a bitter smirk, her smile growing more and more unsettling. "Worried your sweetheart will misunderstand our relationship?"
"If you're done here, you can go. I have other matters to attend to," Jaxon said coolly. Jaxon gave her a cold, indifferent look, then walked back to his desk and sat down without hesitation.
Kendall's gaze fell on the herbal medicine prescription on the desk, further confirming her suspicion. 'There's a strong chance the woman in the break room is Sally,' she wondered.
But since Jaxon had made it clear, Kendall couldn't very well stay any longer. She spun on her heel and stormed out, her high heels clicking sharply.
The door slammed shut behind Kendall, the sharp sound echoing through the office.
Sally waited until the clicking of high heels had faded into the distance before finally stepping out of the break room.
Jaxon turned his swivel chair to face her, a devastating smile playing on his lips.
Last time Sally came to Jaxon's office, Kendall had ambushed her in the restroom. Worried that Kendall might double back and catch her off guard, Sally quickly hurried to the door and locked it from the inside.
"Why so jumpy?" Jaxon asked with an amused smirk.
Sally said, "I'm afraid she might suddenly come back. That would make it even harder to explain ourselves."
"Locking the door like that? Sally, you're making it look like we're sneaking around having an affair." Jaxon leaned against the desk, idly tracing his lips with his thumb as he looked at her with a teasing smile.
Sally shot him a glare before retorting bluntly, "Isn't that exactly what we are right now?"
Without hesitation, Jaxon stood up and moved to her side. His well-defined hand rested on her waist, pulling her closer.
"What do you mean?" Jaxon countered in a deep, velvety voice.
"Don't play dumb." Sally quickly reached out and gave Jaxon a few playful taps on his chest.
To Jaxon, Sally's playful punches were as soft and harmless as hitting a pillow. They barely registered.
Jaxon reached out and firmly grasped her wrist, deftly changing the subject. "Stay and have dinner with me later, okay?"
"I'll pass on dinner. I need to head back now. The clinic is waiting for me—" she said.
"Come on, the clinic won't fall apart without you. Doctor York's still there holding down the fort, isn't he?" Jaxon interrupted her.
Jaxon pulled out his lighter and lit the cigarette dangling from his lips.
