                    Sally was suddenly speechless.
Jaxon tightened his grip on her wrist. "Besides, aren't you afraid Kendall might double back? What if she's downstairs waiting to ambush you? How would you explain that?"
Sally hadn't planned on staying, but after hearing Jaxon's reasoning, she thought to herself, 'That actually makes sense. Given Kendall's temperament, she'd definitely stay behind to ambush me.'
She glanced up at him and finally asked, "So where are you taking me for dinner? If we head out together and Kendall happens to spot us, won't that make things even harder to explain?"
"I'll have Caleb order in dinner for us. We can just eat here in my office. Besides, it's been ages since we last dined together. It's not every day we get a chance like this, don't you think?" Jaxon's lips curved into a faint, sardonic smile as he studied her.
Sally relented, saying, "Alright then, I'll follow your arrangements, Mr. Zale."
"If you were this good all the time, I'd be one happy man." With those words still hanging in the air, Jaxon leaned in and brushed a soft, light kiss against Sally's lips.
Sally's heart skipped a beat again as Jaxon suddenly flirted with her. As Sally's gaze drifted downward, she suddenly caught sight of the telltale lipstick stain on Jaxon's collar.
"Do you know why Kendall suspects you have an affair?" Sally said.
"Why's that?" Jaxon looked at her with puzzled curiosity.
Sally instinctively reached out and tugged at Jaxon's collar. "I accidentally left a lipstick mark on you here."
Jaxon followed her gaze downward and, sure enough, spotted a faint dark red stain on his collar—an exact match for the lipstick on her lips.
Jaxon let out a low, husky chuckle but didn't say a word.
"Looks like I need to get a new lipstick," Sally muttered, frowning slightly. "I don't have much makeup anyway—just this one lipstick, and it's brand new, too."
"Who knew you were so thrifty, Ms. Smith? If you ever married me, I'd be quite lucky, wouldn't I?" Jaxon's smile grew even more nonchalant.
His words sent an involuntary shiver down Sally's spine, freezing her for a heartbeat.
'Marry him? That possibility has never even crossed my mind. That's something I wouldn't even dare to imagine,' Sally thought to herself.
Sally said with a playful yet earnest tone, "Mr. Zale, if I could marry a rich man like you, I'd probably turn into such a shopaholic wife. I'd buy every single shade of lipstick from luxury brands. No color left behind."
By the time Sally finished speaking, a secret delight welled up inside her, and she couldn't help but laugh.
"Looks like Brad really didn't treat you well all those years you were together." Jaxon's expression darkened slightly.
Sally's heart plummeted. She endured so much when she was with Brad. Not only did he and his son have her sent to prison, but even when he gave her gifts, he was always so half-hearted about it.
Every birthday gift from him was either too early or too late, never once on the actual day.
Sally's mood hit rock bottom. She said, "Mr. Zale, unless it's absolutely necessary, don't mention Brad in front of me again. He just brings bad vibes."
Sally swiftly pressed her hand against Jaxon's chest and, without a second thought, pushed him away. Then she strode to the far end of the sofa.
Jaxon immediately sensed the shift in Sally's mood and held himself back, not daring to push his luck any further.
Returning to his desk, Jaxon called Caleb to have him place the dinner order for the day.
After having dinner with her, Jaxon personally drove Sally back to Windmere Estates.
As Sally stepped out of the car at Windmere Estates, she happened to run into Finn returning from his evening walk.
Finn didn't follow her inside. Instead, he walked over to the car and rapped his knuckles against the rear window. The window slid down, revealing Jaxon's striking features reflected in Finn's eyes. "What can I do for you, Mr. Caldwell?"
Finn rested his hand against the glass, his expression cold as he stared at Jaxon. "I know everything about you and Sally."
"Now that you're aware of the situation, Mr. Caldwell, isn't it a bit inappropriate for you to still live with her?" Jaxon pulled out a cigarette, placed it between his lips, and lit up without a moment's hesitation.
Jaxon took a drag from his cigarette and exhaled, the smoke drifting out through the window.
Finn quickly pulled his hand back from the window, putting some distance between himself and the drifting smoke.
"She's already divorced from Brad. If you truly want to be with Sally, then court her properly. Don't keep seeing her under these ambiguous circumstances.
"Remember, a woman's reputation is everything; it's not the same for men." Finn's voice suddenly rose a notch, his eyes smoldering with barely contained irritation.
Jaxon took a slow drag from his cigarette, then flicked the ash away. A sudden gust of wind instantly swept it into nothingness. "Do you really think I want to be stuck in this situation with her?
"I already asked Ms. Smith out, but she keeps turning me down. Honestly, getting her to officially acknowledge our relationship is very hard."
Upon hearing this, Finn's eyes widened in surprise. Finn was genuinely surprised—it turned out Sally had been the one refusing to give in all along.
Still, Finn could understand her actions. Sally had always been a by-the-book woman, and Jaxon was the only exception she'd ever made in her life.
Seeing Finn stay silent, Jaxon let out a low, knowing chuckle. "Got to hand it to you, Mr. Caldwell—coming here to say all this to my face. So, does this mean you're finally ready to let her go?"
Finn froze for a split second. He was completely caught off guard—he hadn't expected Jaxon to see right through him. "Whether I can let go is my own business.
"Mr. Zale, I've never told Sally about this, and I'd appreciate it if you would keep this under wraps from now on. After all, I've never breathed a word about your relationship to anyone, especially not in front of Brad."
Jaxon's expression darkened momentarily upon hearing his words.
Finn gave him a cold, disdainful look and said, "Just because I'm leaving Westmere tomorrow doesn't mean you'll have free rein.
"If I ever hear of anyone bullying her again, I'll come back immediately to stand up for her. So, Mr. Zale, you understand what's expected of you now?"
Jaxon looked at him with solemn intensity. "Rest assured. I'm not Brad. I would never stoop to such despicable acts. She's someone I've searched long and hard for, and I won't let her slip away."
"See that you keep your word." With those final words, Finn walked away without a backward glance.
Jaxon flicked his cigarette to the ground, his gaze darkening as he watched Finn's retreating figure. Jaxon never realized until now just how deeply he'd fallen for Sally.
'If anyone dares to bully her, I'll be the first to make them regret it,' Jaxon thought fiercely. 'With me here, no one, not even Brad, will dare to lay a finger on her.'
