With phone in hand, Sally hurried toward the break room. As soon as she picked up, Jaxon's familiar voice came through, warm and teasing. "Sweetheart, did you get all the gifts?"
The moment Sally heard Jaxon call her sweetheart, her hand involuntarily tightened around the phone.
After taking a moment to compose herself, Sally finally responded softly, "What's with all these gifts suddenly?"
Jaxon chuckled huskily, "Didn't you say your ex was too stingy with you? Now that you're with me, I'll make sure you lack for nothing. I'll make up for everything you missed out on before."
Sally walked to the window, an involuntary blush dusting her cheeks. She spoke bluntly, "Since when am I with you? Don't go making claims like that."
Jaxon teased, "What's the difference?" His smile grew even more nonchalant.
Sally's heart pounded wildly in her chest, the frantic rhythm refusing to calm down no matter how hard she tried.
Jaxon's voice was gentle as he asked, "Do you like the gifts I sent? I wasn't sure what you'd like, so I picked out a bit of everything, hoping at least some would be your style."
As Sally listened to Jaxon's gentle voice, her heart sank like a stone.
Sally still hadn't fully repaid Jaxon for the car he'd given her previously, and now he'd sent her all these lavish gifts. She found herself at a loss for how to respond.
Jaxon asked, his voice tinged with concern, "Hey, why so quiet? Don't you like the gifts?" Jaxon's slightly puzzled voice came through the phone.
After a moment of contemplation, Sally finally spoke up, "Given where we stand right now, it feels a bit much for you to send me all these gifts out of the blue. Honestly, I don't know how I'm supposed to respond. You know I'm still in the middle of my divorce."
Jaxon said softly, "I'm not giving you these things because I expect anything in return. I just truly want you to have the best, to live well and dress well. That's all there is to it."
Jaxon's tone was measured, giving away little of his true feelings.
Sally instinctively swallowed hard, her nerves getting the best of her.
It must have been what she said to him in his office yesterday that really got to him. That was why he sent her all these gifts.
"I was just teasing you yesterday. You didn't actually take me seriously, did you?" Sally said.
Jaxon said with a teasing smile, "I take every word you say to heart, Sally. So you'd better be careful what you tell me, especially if it's something hurtful. Because when you wound me, the scars last."
Hearing Jaxon's words, half teasing, half serious, Sally suddenly felt a heaviness settle in her chest. Though they'd never put a label on it, their history ran deep.
Yet to this day, not once had Jaxon ever said a hurtful word to her. Yet it was always she who kept pushing him away, caught in an endless loop of hesitation and inner conflict.
"Come on. Just keep it since I've given it to you. Don't pull that car-returning stunt again like last time, got it?"
Sally hesitated, then said softly, "These gifts are just too extravagant. I really can't accept them."
"Nothing, no matter how expensive, is more valuable than you. All these things are here to serve you." Jaxon's voice was deathly serious. As his words fell upon her ears, Sally's eyelashes fluttered ever so slightly, beyond her control.
"Thank you for everything you've done for me, Jaxon," Sally smiled.
Jaxon said, "Don't be so formal with me. We're way past that."
After hanging up, Sally found her emotions still in turmoil.
She tossed her phone onto the desk and braced her hands on either side of the desk, her gaze lingering on the array of gifts before her. She couldn't help but feel a gentle warmth blossom in her chest.
Never in her life had anyone ever showered her with so many gifts at once. Put simply, no one had ever made her feel this valued before.
A bittersweet ache welled up in her chest, and for a moment, she felt the overwhelming urge to cry.
"Where's Sally?" a familiar voice suddenly rang out from outside.
As soon as Sally heard the voice, that bittersweet ache in her chest vanished in an instant. The person who arrived was none other than Kendall.
Before Carlos could even respond, Sally flung open the break room door. Sally strode out immediately and demanded bluntly, "What are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you. Should we do this in your break room, or step outside?" Kendall said.
There was no way Sally could let her see all those gifts in the break room. She strode toward the exit. "Let's go."
After casting a disdainful glance at Sally's retreating figure, Kendall finally took long strides to quickly catch up.
Sally and Kendall stopped by the car, standing toe-to-toe in a silent showdown.
Kendall said, "I came here about yesterday evening. When I went to the Crownstone Group to see Jaxon, there was a woman hiding in his lounge. She left a lipstick stain on his collar. Was that you?"
Sally had already guessed why Kendall was here, so she wasn't the least bit surprised when she heard those words. She'd known all along that Kendall would come looking for her eventually. She just didn't expect Kendall to come at her this soon.
"Shouldn't you be asking Jaxon about this?" Sally's tone carried a hint of icy indifference.
Kendall's expression darkened the instant she caught the look in Sally's eyes. Her voice rose sharply. "If he'd just admit it, do you think I'd be here confronting you?"
"Ms. Harper, I've always known you to be a sharp woman. How is it that you become so clueless when it comes to matters of the heart?" Sally sneered.
"What do you mean by that? Are you calling me stupid?" Kendall's voice sharpened. She glared at Sally, her face darkening with barely contained fury.
Sally said, "If that's what you choose to believe, I won't argue."
"You—" Kendall clenched her fists, her fingers tightening for a moment at Sally's words.
Sally didn't hesitate. "Come on, think about it," she said coolly. "If I really were that woman, and even Jaxon won't tell you the truth, what makes you think I'd be the one to spill it?"
Kendall said, "Yesterday evening, I caught a strong whiff of herbal medicine on Jaxon. There were also several packets of it on his desk. You must have brought them over for him and left them in his executive lounge, didn't you?"
Despite Kendall's spot-on deduction, Sally remained as cool as a cucumber, her face betraying nothing.
After all, there was never a so-called lover between her and Jaxon. He never had any real feelings for Kendall, so Sally had nothing to worry about.
Sally curled her lips in a cold smirk. "I don't have time for your pointless speculations. If you want the truth, go find it yourself."
With that, Sally spun on her heel and strode straight toward the clinic entrance.
Kendall's expression turned thunderous, her face a mask of suppressed rage as she listened to Sally. She swiftly reached out and grabbed Sally by the arm.
Sally's steps came to an abrupt halt as Kendall yanked her back.
