Sally turned at the sound, her gaze instantly locking onto Kendall's hand gripping her arm. "Let go." Her voice was as cold and dark as it could get.
"I'll get to the bottom of this. If I find out you're the woman by Jaxon's side, you'll regret it." Kendall not only refused to let go but tightened her grip on Sally's arm with increasing force.
Sally didn't hesitate. Her face icy cold, she yanked the other woman's hand off. She snapped, "I told you, I don't have time for this nonsense. If you're so bored, go find something better to do."
Sally shot her a cold glare, then strode briskly toward the clinic.
Kendall stared at Sally's retreating back, her chest heaving as she struggled to contain her fury. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her knuckles turning pale from the sheer force of her grip.
Back at the clinic, Sally threw herself into work.
It was an exceptionally busy day at the clinic. Sally didn't finish work until after nine p.m. Before leaving the clinic, Sally stopped by the break room.
When Sally opened the break room door and saw the gift boxes inside, she had a headache.
'This stuff really shouldn't be left here,' Sally thought. Brad keeps showing up unexpectedly. If he sees these, he'll definitely start jumping to conclusions again. I need to figure out a way to take them home,' she wondered.
Sally pulled her car up to the front door and, one by one, loaded all the things herself. One trip wasn't enough—her car could only hold about a third of it at a time. The rest would have to wait until tomorrow.
As Sally was unloading her things at home, she happened to see Abigail coming out with the trash.
"Does your clinic have a promotion going on?" Abigail asked, curiosity in her voice as she opened one of the boxes.
When she saw what was inside, her face lit up in shock. "Wow, you're really splurging. What's with all these designer lipsticks? Are you giving them out with medical checkups now?"
Sally held out a pink box to Abigail and said flatly, "Do I really look like the type to splurge like that?"
"Yes," Abigail replied with mock seriousness. "But let's be real. You don't have the cash to pull off a promotion like this right now."
"It's not a promotion. Even if the clinic did run one, all we could offer would be free consultations," Sally clarified. "Everything here was from Jaxon."
At this, Abigail's face registered utter surprise. Her eyes went wide in shock. "Wait, am I hearing this right? All of this is from Jaxon?"
"Yes," Sally replied. She set the box down on the floor, then immediately turned to grab the next one.
Abigail chuckled and teased, "So what's Mr. Zale's game here? Is he officially pursuing you now?"
Sally quickly reached out and clamped a hand over Abigail's mouth, her eyes darting around warily.
Abigail was slightly surprised by Sally's reaction. She pried Sally's hand off her mouth, leaned in closer, and whispered, "What's wrong?"
Sally whispered urgently, "Brad already suspects I have an affair. He might increase surveillance on me, so we need to be extra careful about what we say and do. Let's avoid mentioning him whenever possible."
Abigail leaned in and whispered, "Brad is such a bastard. He messes around outside and refuses to admit it, and now he's even got his eyes on you?"
Sally's lips curled into a cold, mocking smile, but she offered no reply.
"In that case, you two won't be able to meet as often anymore, right?" Abigail asked.
"Pretty much. At least until the official divorce papers come through, we should meet less frequently." Sally shot her a sideways glance, her voice low and serious.
Abigail suddenly leaned in with a teasing grin. "So, is Mr. Zale really okay with this?"
Sally's hands, which had been moving things, suddenly froze mid-motion. She said quietly, "I haven't told him about this yet, and honestly, I don't dare to. Too many people could get involved—someone's bound to slip up sooner or later."
Abigail nodded gently and said nothing more.
It took Sally and Abigail about ten minutes to finally get all the boxes into the house.
Lillian looked up at Sally with wide, curious eyes. "Sally, who sent you all these gifts? This dress looks so pretty. These shoes are so pretty, too."
Lillian stood by the gift boxes, repeatedly glancing down at them, her face full of delight.
"All these gifts were sent to Sally by Jaxon." Before Sally could respond, Abigail, who was standing right beside her, cut in.
"Wow, really?" Lillian looked up at Sally, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Sally, does Jaxon like you? Are you two going to be together?"
At Lillian's words, surprise flashed across both Sally's and Abigail's faces. Though young, Lillian was sharp enough to pick up on the hints immediately.
Abigail looked at Lillian with curiosity and asked gently, "Lillian, can I ask you something?"
"Okay," Lillian turned to Abigail. "What do you want to ask me, Abigail?"
"If Jaxon and Sally really got together and lived with you, would you like that?" Abigail asked.
At Abigail's words, Sally stared at her in disbelief. She instinctively reached out and tugged at Abigail's arm. "Abigail, don't say things like that."
Before Sally could finish speaking, Lillian cut in excitedly, "Yes. I want Jaxon to live with us. He's so nice, and I'm sure he'll treat Sally really well."
Upon hearing the child's innocent words, a knowing smile spread across Abigail's face. She instinctively looked up at Sally, who was standing right in front of her. Sally's cheeks instantly flushed crimson.
"Lillian, can you promise me to keep this just between us for now? We'll only tell others when Sally is ready, okay?" Abigail added.
"Okay, I promise," Lillian replied obediently.
As Sally listened to their back-and-forth, a sinking feeling gradually settled in her chest.
After Lillian went upstairs to bed, Sally finally turned to Abigail and said, "Don't say things like that to Lillian. There's nothing certain between Jaxon and me yet. Why are you jumping to conclusions about us being together?"
"Come on, isn't it just a matter of time before you two get together? You've already come this far. How can you say it's not a thing yet? If you ask me, you're totally the one holding all the cards in this relationship, right?" said Abigail.
Sally simply stared at her in silence.
With just one glance, Abigail instantly saw what Sally was thinking. She teased, "Come on, whether you two end up together is really just up to you. Right?"
Sally couldn't help but let out a helpless laugh at Abigail's words. Sally didn't say a word, but Abigail seemed to know it all.
