At his words, the atmosphere around Sally instantly turned heavy and oppressive. For a fleeting moment, Sally's fingers clenched at her sides, betraying the tension she tried to hide.
Without waiting for Sally's response, Brad strode purposefully toward the villa's front door.
Sally watched Brad's retreating figure as he entered the house, and the coldness in her gaze intensified abruptly.
'I think I can guess what this is about,' Sally thought to herself. 'If I'm right, this must be about those rumors. It seems the rumor storm has finally reached the Zale Mansion.'
From the very moment it all began, Sally was sure someone was deliberately spreading these rumors; otherwise, things would never have escalated like this.
Sally took a deep breath, steeled herself, and finally walked straight into the house.
Upon entering, Lauren and Howard were already seated on the living room sofa, waiting for them in silence.
Sally stepped forward and greeted softly, "Hi, Mr. Zale, Lauren."
Lauren gave a faint nod but remained silent, the smoldering anger in her eyes unmistakable.
"Sally, come and take a seat," Howard greeted Sally warmly, his expression still as amiable as ever.
Sally sat down, lips curving slightly as she asked, "Mr. Zale, what brings us back today?"
Howard's expression darkened as he listened, words seemingly caught in his throat.
"Mr. Zale finds it hard to bring this up, so I'll just ask you directly." Lauren raised her eyes to meet Sally's gaze. "Lately, there have been rumors going around the Zale Mansion that the girl by your side is actually your love child with some guy."
At Lauren's words, Sally felt her heart skip a beat before it began pounding wildly in her chest.
Even though Sally had braced herself for this moment, when she met Lauren's gaze, she couldn't help but feel a flicker of disbelief.
'So they really are going to talk about this,' Sally thought, a wave of disbelief washing over her.
Sally ignored Lauren and fixed her gaze on Brad. "So, Brad, do you really believe that child is mine with someone else? Or was it you who spread this rumor in the first place?"
Brad's face darkened with cold fury. He said, "I didn't spread this rumor, but by now, there's not a single person in the Zale family who doesn't know about it."
Sally stared at him in silence. When their eyes locked, she caught a glimpse of ruthless fury deep within the man's eyes.
"Sally, when I first heard the rumors, my first thought was that they were completely ridiculous," Howard said seriously. "But the gossip has spread far and wide.
"Even though you and Brad are in the process of getting divorced, it's not finalized yet. You're still part of the Zale family. We won't let you suffer any injustice. So tell us the truth, and let me handle it for you."
Seeing the genuine sincerity in Howard's eyes, Sally felt her heart skip a beat. 'Even now, with all these vicious rumors spreading, the only person who truly believes in me is probably Mr. Zale,' Sally thought.
"Grandpa, there's no need to intervene. She's definitely been having an affair for years," Brad said sternly, fixing his gaze on Sally. "Judging by the child's age, it must have started a year or two before she went to prison."
As Sally locked eyes with Brad, the tension between them became almost suffocating.
'If I'm not mistaken, this whole thing must have been orchestrated by Lena,' Sally thought.
Sally looked Brad straight in the eye and asked bluntly, "Did Lena tell you about this?"
A shadow abruptly crossed Brad's face. It was Lena who first told him about this.
Just a few nights ago, Lena suddenly called Brad, claiming that Lillian was allegedly her love child with another man. She even said she had evidence to prove it.
Sally's affair was all but confirmed. Now that Lena had exposed such a scandal, Brad's immediate reaction was to believe it.
"I don't care if she's the one spreading this scandal, but let me make one thing clear. That child is not mine," Sally spoke with unwavering determination, not a hint of hesitation in her voice.
Brad's brow furrowed involuntarily as he snapped, "If the kid isn't yours, why the hell are you so worked up? You even forced Nick to apologize to that girl at school.
"The only damn explanation is—she's your love child with your boy toy. You've been cheating on me for years, haven't you?"
Sally shot back angrily, "Nick was spreading rumors about Lillian at school. Shouldn't I set him straight? What's wrong with making him apologize?
"If you won't discipline your child, then as his stepmother, it's my responsibility to do it."
Brad's voice rose an octave. "Since you won't admit the child is yours, can you at least admit you're having an affair? Do you dare deny it right here, in front of Grandpa and Mom?"
Sally's fingers clenched on her lap for a fleeting moment. At this moment, Sally knew she couldn't let Brad gain the upper hand. 'If I let him win now, everything I've worked so hard to hide will go to waste,' she thought.
Sally looked at Brad calmly, a faint smile playing on her lips. "You keep insisting I'm having an affair, so where's your proof? Have you ever even seen this so-called man?"
Brad was completely stunned. He never imagined she would flat-out deny it.
Brad glared at Sally and snapped, "Damn it. I should've recorded what you said that day at the Crownstone Group." His chest heaved violently with rage, veins bulging prominently on his forehead.
Sally curled her lips into a cold, mocking smile. "This is between us. No need to air our dirty laundry in front of everyone. Besides, you haven't even sorted out your mess with Lena yet. Isn't it a bit hypocritical for you to meddle in my affairs?"
Brad was fuming. "You—"
"That's enough, Brad." At that moment, Howard, who had been sitting quietly to the side, suddenly spoke up.
Brad lifted his gaze to meet Howard's across from him. Seeing the fury on Howard's face, Brad choked back his words, not daring to argue further.
Sally's emotions gradually settled into a quiet satisfaction. 'Time to lay all the cards on the table,' Sally thought.
Sally looked at Howard with a solemn expression and said, "Lillian isn't my biological child. She's adopted."
"Adopted?" Howard looked at her in astonishment. "When did this happen?"
"It was right after I got out. She's actually my cellmate's daughter. She entrusted her girl to me on her deathbed," Sally explained.
"Who do you think you're fooling, Sally?" Brad snapped.
Without waiting for Sally's response, Brad strode purposefully toward the villa's front door.
Sally watched Brad's retreating figure as he entered the house, and the coldness in her gaze intensified abruptly.
