Sally whipped her head around at the sound, her nerves instantly on edge.
Brad sprang up in fury, towering over her. "That's clearly the child you had with your lover. How can you lie to Grandpa like this? Have you no shame?"
Sally glared up, her voice tight with anger. "I'm not lying. That child is my cellmate's."
"Then show me the proof. You must have the adoption papers, right?" Brad demanded sharply.
At that moment, a deep voice cut through the tense silence. "I can vouch for this matter."
As the words fell, everyone in the room instantly turned toward the doorway.
Sally froze for a split second when she saw the man walking in. 'Why's he here?' she wondered.
"Jaxon?" Brad stared at the approaching man in surprise. "Did you just say you can vouch for her?"
Jaxon shot Brad a cold, dismissive look, then sat down beside Sally.
Jaxon fixed his gaze on the people across from him. "That's correct. Ms. Smith's former cellmate was a mutual friend of mine and Kendall's. Lillian is actually Sienna's daughter."
Brad blinked in surprise. "Sienna? Who the hell is that?"
"So it was her child after all." Howard nodded thoughtfully. "In that case, this whole matter appears to be just a misunderstanding."
Brad whipped his head around in disbelief. "Grandpa, you know her?"
"I know her," Howard replied bluntly. "She once came to our house for dinner, back when she was still single. Your grandma and I gave her a gift, and she returned with an even more generous one.
"She had such a generous and forthright nature. That's why I remember her so well. I just never expected she'd end up in prison."
"She's dead," Sally said bluntly. "She met a toxic man and went down the wrong path. We met in prison, and later she entrusted her child to me.
"She once saved my life, so I owed her a great debt. That's why I adopted Lillian—to repay her kindness. Mr. Zale recognized Lillian as his goddaughter to protect her, and he's always treated her as his daughter. For that, I'm truly grateful to him."
At Sally's words, Brad and Howard looked genuinely stunned, unmistakable surprise written all over their faces.
"I didn't tell you the truth before because I was afraid certain people might harm Lillian, or interfere with the adoption." Sally didn't bother to name anyone; her tone dripped with icy disdain.
After hearing her words, Brad's grip on his phone involuntarily tightened, his knuckles turning pale with suppressed rage. Everyone present knew exactly who she was subtly referring to—it was Brad.
But with Jaxon and Howard watching, Brad couldn't exactly blow up now.
"Now that the truth is out, let's make it official. With me here, no one will ever be able to tear you two apart." Howard fixed Sally with a stern look, but the tenderness in his eyes was unmistakable.
"Thank you, Mr. Zale, for always having our backs like this," Sally said. From the bottom of her heart, Sally felt truly grateful to Howard, her gaze softening with emotion.
"Now that the misunderstanding has been cleared up, I don't want to hear another word about this. Let's put it behind us and move on," said Howard.
Brad shot his grandfather a challenging look. "Now that the misunderstanding's cleared up, Grandpa, aren't you going to do something about her keeping a boy toy?"
As Brad's words hung in the air, Sally could instantly feel the sharp weight of Jaxon's piercing gaze land on her.
Sally didn't turn to meet his eyes, but she could feel the icy intensity of Jaxon's stare piercing through her.
"Really? Ms. Smith has been keeping a boy toy? And how exactly would you know about that?" a voice sounded.
Jaxon's gaze snapped up to Brad, his eyes cold and piercing. Brad's face darkened even further as he snapped, "She admitted it herself—straight from her own mouth."
For a split second, Sally's spine went rigid, her body betraying a flash of tension.
The atmosphere instantly turned heavy. Howard rose from the sofa, his expression indifferent as he stated, "Brad, you and Sally are already divorced. What she does now is her private matter. Stop dwelling on it is pointless."
Brad choked back his frustration. "Grandpa, how can you play favorites like this? She—"
"Alright. Let's leave it at that for today. I'm retiring for the night," Howard declared.
The butler promptly stepped forward and assisted Howard back to his chambers.
Lauren also stood up. "Brad, come with me for a moment. I need to have a word with you in private."
Brad flat-out ignored his mother, stubbornly staying put as he glared at Sally across from him with undisguised fury.
Lauren strode over, grabbed Brad by the arm, yanked him up from the sofa, and marched him decisively toward the study.
The living room was now empty except for Sally and Jaxon.
Sally turned to the man beside her and murmured, "Jaxon, what brings you here all of a sudden?"
Jaxon stared at her, his expression dark and unreadable, saying nothing.
That afternoon, the butler had already called me, saying both Sally and Brad would be returning this evening.
Jaxon had caught wind of some of the rumors swirling around Sally lately, and that was exactly why he'd rushed back. He couldn't just stand by and watch her get hurt.
Noticing that Jaxon remained silent, Sally rose from the sofa and said coolly, "Since you don't wish to answer, Mr. Zale, I'll take my leave now."
Jaxon stood up and followed her out immediately. "You didn't bring your car? Are you seriously planning to walk all the way down the hill?"
Sally replied softly, "Sounds like a good idea."
"You're so damn stubborn," Jaxon muttered under his breath. He brushed past her, his voice thick with displeasure.
Sally watched Jaxon's retreating figure for a beat, then squared her shoulders and quickened her pace to catch up with him.
As Sally got into the car, she could immediately sense the unusually somber atmosphere radiating from Jaxon beside her.
The Zale Mansion was perched halfway up the mountainside, so it took some time to drive down the winding roads.
The Maybach wound through the twisting mountain roads. Sally gazed out at the inky darkness beyond the window, sitting in complete silence.
Halfway down the mountain road, the Maybach suddenly screeched to a halt.
Sally's gaze snapped back to Jaxon. She shot Jaxon a puzzled look and asked, "Jaxon, why did you slam on the brakes all of a sudden?"
"Aren't you going to explain to me what this whole boy toy thing is about?" Jaxon shot her a cold look and demanded. His fingers clenched the steering wheel involuntarily.
As their eyes locked, Sally saw a deep, icy chill in Jaxon's gaze. She said bluntly, "There's nothing to explain. It was just an excuse to brush Brad off."
"That doesn't make sense. Our involvement has never been made public, so how could it possibly have gotten out—" he said.
"He started suspecting I have an affair. Honestly, I just had no other choice, so I made up an excuse on the spot." Sally looked at him helplessly, her voice lowering slightly.
Jaxon froze for a split second, caught off guard. After a brief pause, Jaxon let out a low, husky chuckle. "So that boy toy you mentioned? Wouldn't happen to be me?"
A faint blush crept up Sally's cheeks before she could stop it. She couldn't believe he just came out and said it like that.
Sally shot him a glare and snapped, "If you already know, why bother asking me?"
