Jaxon extended his prominent-knuckled hand, resting it lightly beneath her chin before suddenly gripping her jaw and pulling her closer in an instant.
The sudden closeness made Sally's lashes flutter. Her hands, resting on her lap, clenched tighter, her fingertips digging into her palms.
Jaxon's voice dripped with menace. "Hearing it from you changes everything."
Sally forced down her nerves and shot back, "What's the difference?"
"If it comes from your mouth, that means you're admitting our relationship." Jaxon flashed a dangerously charming smile. "Am I right, Ms. Smith?"
Sally attempted to pull away from Jaxon's grip, but he only tightened his hold, making it clear he had no intention of letting her go.
"Why are you avoiding? You still haven't answered me," he pressed on.
Sally placed her hand on his arm, her voice laced with concern. "Brad will definitely leave the Zale Mansion after he finishes talking to his mom.
"If you park the car here on this mountain road and he happens to come by, what if he witnesses something inappropriate?"
Jaxon leaned in, his tone teasing yet dangerous. "It takes at least twenty minutes to get here from the Zale Mansion. Even if I wanted to do something to you, it'd be over before Brad showed up.
"You're already divorced—so what are you afraid of?"
"Twenty minutes? Knowing you, that's hardly enough time. When have you ever finished with me in less than an hour?" Sally's voice dropped lower, her words trailing off.
A flush crept up her neck as she realized that she'd definitely said too much.
Jaxon absently worked his jaw, his smile growing more dangerously casual.
He leaned in close to her ear, his voice dripping with danger. "Seems Ms. Smith, we haven't been together that many times, yet you already know me inside out."
"I didn't," Sally shot back. She quickly pulled her hand free from Jaxon's grip, turned her face sharply to the side, and stared out the window.
Jaxon's smile grew dangerously lazy. "Sally, do you know what you're absolutely terrible at?"
At his words, Sally swiftly turned her head, meeting Jaxon's mesmerizing phoenix eyes. In Jaxon's phoenix eyes, Sally caught a flash of burning desire, unmistakable and intense.
The moment she caught that look in his eyes, Sally felt her heart skip a beat, then it started pounding so wildly against her ribs. Suppressing her nerves, she couldn't help but ask with curiosity, "What is it?"
Suddenly, Jaxon gripped the back of her neck with one hand and forcefully pulled her closer again.
In that fleeting moment when their noses touched, nose-to-nose, her heart raced like never before. Not even in their sex had she ever felt this way.
"It's—" Jaxon's scorching breath fanned against her lips, his voice a velvet threat. "Lying."
The moment the words left his lips, Jaxon closed the distance and claimed her mouth in a fierce kiss.
The sudden kiss sent Sally's heart racing, pounding so hard she feared it might leap right out of her chest.
Jaxon cradled her face in his hands, claiming her lips in a deep, consuming kiss.
She could feel his breathing grow heavier. Before she knew it, her hand shot out to clutch the cuff of his white shirt.
Perhaps it was this subtle, involuntary gesture that made Jaxon suddenly pull back, his hands withdrawing at once.
He curved his lips in a faint smile and teased, "Ms. Smith, you seem unusually tense today. Are you really that worried Brad might show up?"
Sally hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jaxon, I've never had sex in a place like this—"
"Neither have I—" Before Sally could finish, Jaxon cut her off with a low chuckle. "Relax. I wasn't planning on doing anything to you tonight."
Jaxon's hand, still resting on the nape of Sally's neck, gently caressed her skin before finally releasing her.
Sally felt her pounding heart gradually settle. 'Of course,' she thought, 'a man of his stature would never do something so reckless.'
Jaxon started the car, glanced at the rearview mirror, an irrepressible smirk curving his lips. "Well, looks like you called it. Didn't expect Brad to be this quick."
Sally whipped her head around and immediately spotted a black Porsche Cayenne speeding toward them. Her brows knitted involuntarily for a fleeting moment.
'Thank goodness, nothing happened between us just now,' Sally breathed a silent sigh of relief as she wondered.
Brad pulled up alongside Jaxon's Maybach and rolled down the passenger window.
Without a word, Jaxon rolled down the driver's window, draped his arm over the frame, and fixed Brad with an icy stare.
Brad saw Sally in the passenger seat at once. His fingers dug into the steering wheel, his knuckles whitening with the unconscious force.
Every time Brad saw Jaxon and Sally together, an inexplicable feeling twisted in his gut. The two of them just had this vibe—they were so alike.
That inexplicable feeling was like ants devouring his heart, and it just wouldn't stop.
Jaxon watched Brad's silence, then drawled, "Well, Brad? Got something on your mind?"
After a long, tense silence, Brad finally spoke. "Why are you parked here? Having car trouble?"
"This spot has a great view of the city lights. Ms. Smith said she was misunderstood today and was feeling down, so she asked me to stop and let her enjoy the scenery." Jaxon's lips curled into a cold smirk. "What's wrong, Brad? Planning to join us?"
Sally's brows furrowed slightly at Jaxon's words. 'Why would he say something so suggestive?' she thought. 'Knowing Brad, he'd definitely jump to conclusions.'
"Jaxon, even though Sally and I are divorced, don't you think it's a bit inappropriate for the two of you to be alone together halfway up the mountain, watching the night view at this hour?" Brad threatened.
Sally's hands, resting on her lap, clenched suddenly. 'I knew it,' Sally thought. 'Brad just had to look for trouble.'
Before Sally could respond, Jaxon cut in, his tone cool and mocking, "You two are already divorced. Ms. Smith isn't your wife anymore, so isn't it even more inappropriate for you to be meddling in her business now, Brad?"
Brad started, but the words died in his throat.
Jaxon's smile deepened with cold amusement. "Since you're already divorced, you'd better remember your place. Besides, Ms. Smith is Lillian's adoptive mother. Even then, I still count as her family."
Brad's temper snapped at Jaxon's explanation, fury flashing across his face. He yanked open his car door, strode around the hood, and marched straight to the passenger side of Jaxon's Maybach.
Jaxon rolled down the passenger window but kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, refusing to so much as glance Brad's way.
Brad demanded bluntly, "Sally, get out of the car now."
The sudden closeness made Sally's lashes flutter. Her hands, resting on her lap, clenched tighter, her fingertips digging into her palms.
